...The recent National Basketball Association lockout captured nationwide attention. NBA ownership and its players fought for what each thought was best. The players were fighting to protect what they already had, while the owners tried to protect their investments in each franchise. If you own a television chances are high that you probably were aware of the recent lockout of players in the National Basketball Association (NBA). There were many complex issues surrounding both sides regarding this situation which I will get into during the course of this paper. The main goal of both the owners and the players was to come to agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement. The previous collective bargaining agreement expired in June of 2011. The 2011-2012 NBA season, was in jeopardy if a new agreement was not able to be reached. After hours of negotiations and back and forth momentum changes from each side, an agreement was finally reached on November 25, 2011, saving the season and allowing thousands of people to return to work. The NBA lockout has many twists and turns since July 1st 2011. The players and the owners of the teams have many decisions to make. In the meantime there is no guarantee that there will be a 2011-12 NBA season. Between revenue sharing and the salary cap of the players, there are negotiations that are still going on. This is leaving the players to look elsewhere for a salary including playing overseas and playing for smaller salaries. The fans are...

...Evaluating the benefits, costs, and risk associated with negotiating Juwan Howard’s free agent contract, Juwan Howard had many request to be comfortable with whatever organization that he chose to work for. Juwan Howard, due to his last two seasons with the Wizards, believed he had become a valuable NBA commodity, averaging 19.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game over the two seasons (Barry, Lewicki, & Saunders, 2007). With the stats recorded, Juwan Howard wanted his compensation to match his achievements and the ability to follow his dreams. Juwan Howard’s request, though demanding and deserving, were lavish in comparison to other contract at the time. He wanted a long term contract of $100 million over 7 years, luxury suites on away games, limo services paid for, extra tickets for games, and the possibility to purchase a new Ferrari and his dream home. Juwan Howard did not want to go to another team because of his love of the state of Washington, his loyalties to his coaches and fans and desire to stay where he started his career. Above all else though, he wanted to go where the money is. The General Manager for the Washington Wizards is Mr. Unseld. Mr. Unseld really wanted to keep Juwan Howard happy, keep him in the city that loved him, and to be able to provide a supporting cast of players to compliment Juwan Howard’s abilities. In doing so, he knew that with the salary cap, he could not accomplish paying Juwan Howard the amount of money he is requesting...

...Many articles have been made and written about the lockout. After searching and finding two articles from FoxNews and MSNBC, it became easy to compare and contrast them. Both are about how NBA games have been canceled and will be canceled more in the future. The NBA should hurry up and end the lockout to make the fans and players happy without having to cancel anymore games. In the two articles, both are very similar. Comparisons from the FoxNews article and the MSNBC article could be how both talk about David Stern, (the NBA commissioner) canceling the first two weeks of the NBA season. The regular season was scheduled to begin November first, which both articles include. It would be the first time the NBA had games canceled since the 1998-99 schedule was reduced to 50 games due to a work stoppage. Both articles conclude the meeting that was called off which actually led to the first two week cancellation. The cancellation is a major economic blow and loss to the country’s 29 NBA arenas including the Toronto Raptors arena in Canada. The NBA lockout articles have a lot to do with Commissioner David Stern, deputy commissioner Adam Silver, and all NBA team owners. They all have say in the lockout agreement. If one person does not agree, the NBA union can not resume the NBA schedule. Both articles talk about this a lot, which is a great...

...The National Basketball Association (NBA) Lockout HRMG 5930 Strayer University October 08, 2012 Abstract While there were many who might have been sick of the whole NBA lockout fiasco, and were thinking the NBA lockout may have been a bad thing for all parties involved…it was clear that the lockout not only effected the fans, it also had a lasting effect on many people behind the scenes as well. From the people like the office assistants who did a lot of the scheduling of games, marketing and halftime entertainment, to the concession stand companies and workers, bar owners (who hosted watch parties), the thousands of security guards and ushering staff members that worked and staffed the arenas, the problems trickled down and caused issues and unemployment problems for many people we may not have even though about. In retrospect, the lockout affected a lot more than the players and owners that we have seen on television, it lasted so long that its affect also caused havoc and mayhem in the lives of so many working class folks, that it even forced some to seek part-time or other employment to make ends meet in their households. This paper will address what the NBA lockout was about, what each sides issues were (Owners and Players), what they wanted and set out to achieve, the outcome and what it meant for the owners and players, and finally, CBA affected all parties involved. While the fans and countless others were probably sick and tired of the whole NBA lockout...

...The NBA is currently in the midst of a work stoppage that is threatening the entire 2011-2012 NBA season. This work stoppage has been all over the news in the sports world and has focused criticism on both the players and owners. The owners are seen as being greedy and playing the role of billionaires simply trying to maximize their profit, and the players are seen as being millionaires who are equally greedy and only care about making money. The news and players will have you believe that it is an equal battle, where it is just a matter of the sides meeting in the middle. The truth is that the owners will not meet in the middle because they feel they have the upper hand. These men have in the hundreds of millions of dollars, and are proven business men. The truth is that the majority of the players do not have college degrees, and the owners do not feel they have to bend to them. The only way to fix this is by improving the player’s education. An extra year of college will give players a greater foundation for their education, and make it easier to pursue degrees part time. The NBA should increase its draft age requirement to two years of college education in an effort to improve both on and off court skills for incoming players. Before the 2006 rule change, that stated players must be one year out of high school before being eligible for the draft, the NBA’s biggest stars were coming straight from high school. Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, and many more of the NBAs...

...This case is about the 99 Cent Only Store’s supply chain business model and how competitive advantage is executed within the context of its information systems (IS) strategies. Founder David Gold’s model is to create a straight path between a low-priced item and a paying customer. Under the tutelage of Robert Adams, vice president of IS, notes “bleeding edge technology (Oz, 2009 p. 73) is unnecessary, rather integration of information technology (IT) with a high rate of return on investment (ROI), which achieves the goal of efficiency is implemented. The specific action of avoiding progressive technology provides a supply chain advantage system. Instead of relying on new and specifically made software, Adams utilizes ready made products, which can be tailored to 99 Cent’s needs, such as HighJump’s Warehouse Advantage. Adam who is a software developer by trade, supervises an IT team who ensures the ISs are accommodating and inexpensive for the organizations needs, the most prevalent is optimum efficiency. According to authors Effy Oz and J. Rae-Supree, 38 new 99 Cent stores opened in 2003, revenues amounted to over 1.1 billion (Oz, 2009 p. 72), but only $5 million dollars was spent in IT. Research from the companies 10-K form shows, that from 2009 through 2012, significant investment in various “infrastructure, data management, and process improvement projects…enabling the achievement of level one compliance with Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards” (99, 2012). The report details...

...Determinants of Basketball players salaries For my research question i have chosen to find out what the determinants are when it comes to the salary of basketball players. I find this topic interesting because I have always been a huge fan of basketball. When I was younger i used to also wonder why only certain players had their jersey's sold in stores. Another interesting fact about this topic is that, recently there had been a NBA lockout. This drawn out situation had fans wondering how long basketball would be on pause for. When it comes to the salary of basketball players, variables that I would like explore that i feel that salary is dependent on are Age, Experience, nationality, position and average points during a game and the salary cap. Another interesting factor to take into Similar literature i have found are topics related to each one of my variables on the uoguelph lib database. A journal i have found on the uoguelph database published under the name The Windsor Star talks about the salary cap and the effects it has on the salary of the NBA players. This journal also takes into account the best-selling retro jerseys in the NBA. Popularity can be an attribute to the salary of the players as well. I have also found a thesis paper done by The Faculty of the Department of Economics and Business at the Colorado College written by Nathaniel Brodman. In this paper, it takes into account the several variables that might be over looked. The basic rule of economics of...

...IT Makes Cents 99 Cents had an enormous advantage as a pioneer in the one-price field. It was a great risk for David Gold to integrate a new technology to the vision of maintaining massive floor spaces satisfying demand. Now their IS plays a strategic role in identifying, distributing, and inventory control on all of their items. The system is able to alert officers in real time when large discounts are happening. The IS tells the floor workers which bins to fill up while staying away from overstocking. Robert Adams had the right mindset when researching for a system that would support all of 99 Cents activities. This system had to be complete, accurate, and economical which gave them great competitive advantage as the system was constantly generating relevant useful information. This relevant information was the reason why David Gold trusted Robert Adams so much, if the information was not used towards return on investment, the system had to be modified to serve its purpose. It was not clear whether 99 Cent stores were using their own transportation or shipping company, but I am pretty sure they utilized information from their ERPs regarding shipping of items combined with GISs to pinpoint the exact location of shipment. This way 99 Cents managers could tell their customers when and where to expect an item. For example, at the Beverly Hills store management could not afford to make customers dissatisfied at any level and managers would have...

...The General Plan Student’s Name Institution of Learning Every city has its vision, goals and strategy. That’s why, they need to make some plan in order to set policy guidelines for every future action and to work for particular results. This document describes implementation steps and direction of city development. The general plan of city is its constitution and policy guide for the future. I have chosen a city of Fresno in California to analyze its general plan and how they are dealing with problems. This community is facing some noise issues, especially traffic sound. It might look like not so important problem in the fast-growing world, but often it can be annoying and even harmful for mental health. That’s why, it is useful to know how to deal with such problems. Furthermore, issues of noise are widely spread in Fresno, because there are three airports, four state highways and also some major streets, carrying large vehicles and truck traffic. It is important to note that industrial facilities in the city also generate noise from equipment. Due to the general plan, the goal of the community has been made in relation to this issue. They want to promote a city of Fresno with safe and comfortable streets and to have a lot of opportunities to relax. A vision is to make Fresno an ideal place for living, working and relaxing or to improve the quality of life there. In the general plan there are a lot of solutions to deal with noise problems. Two Italian witnesses said that they had seen a man throwing a person into the Tiber River either on Thursday night or early Friday morning near the Garibaldi Bridge, according to Fox News. Solomon had an injury to his head and his shirt was bloody. According to local news agency ANSA, the preliminary results of an autopsy indicated that the Wisconsin native had injuries consistent with a fall and spent days in the water. Solomon was going to attend school at the American college, John Cabot University, located in Rome. On Thursday, June 30, Solomon had gone out to a pub with friends to have a good time, just hours after he arrived in Rome. His roommate notified officials at the school that around 1 a.m. on Thursday night he had lost contact with Beau. Additionally, university officials said that Solomon had not shown up at orientation when he was supposed to on Friday morning, according to The Washington Post. The exact cause of Solomon's death has not yet been determined, but police believe that he likely was murdered. His family contacted a credit card company and they discovered that somebody had used one of Solomon's credit cards, charging thousands of dollars to his account. ...Introduction Consumer behaviour is the buying behaviour of the last consumers that buy goods or services for their personal consumption. As a marketer, in order to change customers’ think and act, understand consumer behaviour is really important. They have to know the ‘why’ to influence the remaining ‘WH’ in consumer behaviour (Kotler and Armstrong, 2014)1. In this assignment, I will be aiming the white-collar workers which also known as office workers, their ages are around 30 to 50 years old. I’ve chosen psychographic segmentation to target buyers in the market. This segmentation classify consumers based on social class, personality or lifestyles (Kotler and Armstrong, 2014)2. Office workers are the bunch that always work overtime and seldom have proper meal. This unhealthy lifestyle causes most of them having weak digestion system. Carbonated water is a plain water with sugar free, no calorie and contains carbon dioxide, it gives a bubbly mouthfeel and slightly sour taste. It also known as sparkling water, seltzer water or soda water (Collins, 2015). According to Greenfield (2014), consume carbonated water can help in curing the digestion problem like dyspepsia and constipation. Besides, with carbonated water that contained sodium, it can help in reduce the risk of getting heart diseases. Also, people will tend to drink more carbonated water because of its unique taste, it is good for those who are having dehydration. The Characteristics that Affect Consumer Behaviour ...
