...been thought to be the oldest parrot fossil and is presumed to have originated from the Late Cretaceous period, which makes it about 70 Ma (million years ago).[9] Other studies suggest that this fossil is not from a bird, but from a caenagnathid theropod or a non-avian dinosaur with a birdlike beak.[10][11] It is now generally assumed that the Psittaciformes, or their common ancestors with several related bird orders, were present somewhere in the world around the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event (K-Pg extinction), some 66 Ma. If so, they probably had not evolved their morphological autapomorphies yet, but were generalised arboreal birds, roughly similar (though not necessarily closely related) to today's potoos or frogmouths (see also Palaeopsittacus below). Though these birds (Cypselomorphae) are a phylogenetically challenging group, they seem at least closer to the parrot ancestors than, for example, the modern aquatic birds (Aequornithes). The combined evidence supported the hypothesis of Psittaciformes being "near passerines", i.e. the mostly land-living birds that emerged in close proximity to the K-Pg extinction. Indeed, analysis of transposable element insertions observed in the genomes of passerines and parrots, but not in the genomes of other birds, provides strong evidence that parrots are the sister group of passerines, forming a clade Psittacopasserae, to the exclusion of the next closest group, the...

...neighbors in Joanne Harris novel ‘Tea with the birds’ from 2001. The narrator lives in a flat in Mortimer Street. The narrator describes Mortimer Street as being “busy without being comfortable; crowded without being friendly” .Mortimer street has a sense of coldness around it, and no-one really knows their neighbors even though they “live like birds in cages” . The coldness suits the narrator, because she enjoys the solitude, privacy and silence of her own flat. This has aroused her neighbors’ curiosity and suspicious towards her, because as she describes “I’m a completely different race from my neighbors” . Both the narrator and her neighbors consider her as an outsider, but this does not bother the narrator. Her neighbors consider her as being snobby cause of her reluctance to speak with them. Therefore her neighbors observe her and presume, she is a student nurse and she doesn’t bother to correct them. Mortimer Street is a reflection on the narrators own personality. She is very introverted and doesn’t have an interest in getting to know her neighbors. The narrator lives her lonely life, until the day when Mr. Juzo Tamaoki moves in the apartment opposite to hers. “Another foreigner said the Mortimer Street grapevine, with barely concealed disapproval” . This once again shows Mortimer Streets residents’ insecurity towards anyone different from them self. When the narrator and Mr. Tamaoki meet, his expression reminds her of a bird, she once saw...

GLOBAL GREY NOTHING BUT E-BOOKS TABLE OF CONTENTS PART I. THE PARLIAMENT OF THE BIRDS PART II. ON, TO THE CITY OF GOD PART III.THROUGH THE SEVEN VALLEYS PART IV.RECEPTION AT THE ROYAL COURT 1 The Conference Of The Birds By Farid Ud-Din Attar PART I. THE PARLIAMENT OF THE BIRDS THE PARLIAMENT OF THE BIRDS Once upon a time, in the dim old days, all the birds of the world assembled in solemn conclave to consider a momentous question. Ever since the dawn of Creation the inhabitants of every city had had a king or leader, called Shahryar, or the friend of the city, but these feathered souls had no king to befriend them. Theirs was an army without a general—a position most precarious. How could they be successful in the battle of life without a leader to guide the weakwinged party through the perils of earthly existence? Many an eloquent speaker addressed the assembly, deploring their helpless plight in plaintive terms, bringing tears to the eyes of thetiny ones, and it was unanimously agreed that it was highly desirable, nay, absolutely necessary, that they should place themselves without delay under the protection of a king. At this stage, full of fervour, leapt forward the Hoopoe (Hud-hud) renowned in the Muslim scriptures for the part she had played as King Solomon’s trusted...

...Although Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds and Daphne du Maurier's "The Birds" have the same titles, there are many differences and similarities. The reason birds attack humans are different, as well as the season between film and story. One similarity of Mit's mother and Nat's wife. One difference between The birds and "The birds" is the reason birds attack human. In film The Birds, the characters never find why the birds attack, but one old woman who has two children;she is the only character who say that the reasons why the birds attack are because of the cold weather or hunger,"No? cold, maybe. Hungry. You put out some crumbs"(duMaurier).Even though the characters in both the film and the book think about many reasons for the attack, the only reason...

...knew that those birds were going to come back. And at that moment he heard a tapping on the door. Once more, just like the beginning, and he turned his head around as fast as he could and peered at the door. He grabbed his rifle, marched towards the door, put a stern hand on the handle and pulled the door open with all the strength he could. Nat was furious! However when he opened the door he saw nothing there, except one small bird. His wife now behind him said, “ that is no harm to us at all, calm down Nat. Its just one small bird… actually not even a bird its only a chick.” Nat, now calm says, “ well thats true he doesn’t look like any harm.” and with that the bird made one small chirp and a swarm of majestic large birds swarmed into their home. Attacking both Nat and his wife. Screaming, the two ran as fast as they could heading towards the children but the birds had already got to them… blood splattered everywhere, on the walls, on the sheets, and the children lay there ripped to shreds from these disgusting, evil, birds. A large shrill scream came from Nat’s wife with one look at her kids and she collapsed to the floor. Nat now in a state of panic, rushed and closed the door to the room thinking of what he could possibly do next to save his wife and himself. He thought long and carefully, Nat decided that this is his fate and aloud he said, “ I will die, but I will not die without a fight” slowly making his hand into a fist. And with that the birds blew open the door...

...The Galah Why aboriginals called this birds a “fool”? This birds must be a clown? Do they really act like one? Or it’s not true? Well, I happen to be a bird lover and I own two of these beautiful, funny and affectionate birds. One of them is I called “Markus”. I got Markus when he was just five months, the younger the bird, it is easy to teach to talk. I named Markus after my ex which I assume Markus cursed me of naming after him. Markus on the other hand, is much a better company than a human like my ex. I refused refer my birds to “it” just because they are animals, so each of them is either “He” or “She” Early morning, Markus rises early even before the sun rises. He then come to my bed, kissed me and asked to come inside the blanket, He then snuggle under my chin and asked a head scratch which most birds love then close his eyes and sleep more with me. None bird lovers know how affectionate really a bird can be. Markus would give up his play time or meal time if he saw me, he prefer to spend time with me than anything else in this world. He can talk a lot of words and still learning just to impress me. He can dance and mimic my laugh that whenever I heard him saying it, it made me laugh and we just laugh at each other. Whenever Markus talk he uses in a right manner, he also said “hello” to anyone and he has a submissive behaviour. He considered me as his mate. He is not interested to my other two birds; another galah and a lorikeet, he bonded to me so close that he...

...What can HR managers learn from Angry Birds? Employee engagement has always been an area of ambiguity for HR professionals. This is one area which is very contextual and the research can conflict with evidence. This is one area where I have erred and paid heavily. But the point that I want to put forth he is that how can we understand engagement better by observing day to day phenomenon in the lives of people. One thing that struck me while playing a PC game was that how engrossed people get while playing games. Since I am also an amateur gamer, I myself have felt this feeling very often, especially during my Counterstrike times at TISS. My latest gaming obsession is Angry Birds. I am sure there are many people out there who love this game as well, but I have chosen this game to understand how engagement works with people. For the sake of common ground understanding, I have selected Angry Birds as a game for our analysis for the following reasons * It’s a simple and straight forward game which everyone and anyone can play without requiring to go through a steep learning curve * Angry Birds has a significant Male-Female following, I.e. many women also play angry birds as compared to other games like Doom or Halo. * Angry Birds has a wider player base with respect to age group How do games manage to keep people such highly engaged that they give it more priority than anything else? Let us try to analyze this from the perspective of a HR person. What do we do when...

...1. Opening 2. Introduction • What is the “Swiftlets Nest” Swiftlets (collocalia) are tiny insectivorous birds that are distributed from the Indian Ocean, through Southeast Asia and North Australia to the Pacific. Amongst various species of swiftlets in the genus of Collocalia, only the nests of four species habituating in the Southeast Asian region have commercial value because of human consumption. They are Collocalia fuciphaga, Collocalia germanis, Collocalia maxima and Collocalia unicolor. Collocalia species, average 6.5g in weight, have glossy plumage. Their nests are constructed with salivary glue, a cementing substance, and may incorporate other materials such as vegetation or feathers. It takes about 20 days to finish the nest. The edible bird's nest ( 燕窩 in Chinese) making up with purely salivary glue are much more expensive than those incorporating with other materials. The demand for edible bird's nest Increase => It may be due to the fact that Hong Kong people are more and more concerned about their health. Moreover, a dual nature of edible bird's nest, that could be treated as medicine or/and food, may play a role. History In the past, people could only buy dried edible bird's nests. Nowadays, for the advancement in food technology, large variety of edible bird's nest related products emerge to the market. They are readily to serve products. No cooking process is required. Amongst those new products...

...Change in Precipitation Ramon Pena BIO101 February 14, 2011 Dr. Richard Steiner Change in Precipitation Introduction This experiment will take course during a 300-year-time -period simulation. This experiment will consist of two islands, Darwin Island, Wallace Island and take only into account the bird population of these two islands. The parameter will stay the same, except for one variable; precipitation. I will record how the precipitation changes the beak size of the bird population and what other effects it has on them. My hypothesis is that if the amount of precipitation is changed in one of the island then there will be more food. If there is more food in one of the islands then I can assume that more birds have access to more food, thus requiring a bird’s beak to stay the same while the birds from the other island have an increase in beak size due to the fact that they have to scavenge more for their food. Materials For this experiment, I will use a windows-based desktop computer with a 24-inch monitor for better viewing of graphs and simulations. I will also use notebook for recording cross time period information. Within the computer, I will be using a Java-based tool simulation, named Evolution Lab that will run the experiment and demonstrate the results. This will be the most important material for this experiment. Procedures First, this experiment takes place on a computer simulation called Evolution Lab. The Evolution lab can be accessed through the...

...Daphne du Maurier's short story “The Birds” (published in 1952) and Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 movie The Birds are both captivating pieces and share many themes and conflicts. However, the original storyline and characters written by Maurier are lost in its transition to the big screen. Hancock’s take on the story is much more geared to frighten and thrill an audience as he removes everything but the core themes of the story. In summary, the short novel “The Birds” is about a small family that lives near the sea shore in England. As the East wind blows it brings winter with it, and large flocks of a variety of birds. The birds act apart from their usually instincts and start attacking people during the tide changes. The movie, however, follows...

...every six hours. Birds are swarming in bigger numbers than ever before. Packs are being formed and territories are being claimed. Each species has a different tactic to use as an attacking skill. Daphne du Maurier creates the mood of suspense in her short story "The Birds" through the uses of foreshadowing, conflict, and imagery. Du Maurier uses descriptive words to build the suspense. "The birds have been more restless than ever this fall of the year, the agitation more marked because the days were still" (Maurier 52). The birds are going to cause problems later in the story. This gives the reader a feeling of uneasiness because of the way the birds are acting. The birds are acting in an unstable way...

There are numerous benefits of taking the head start. Regardless of what disease or illness one has or thinks about, there are various benefits to having an early diagnosis, or at least a diagnosis on the first trip to the doctor. One of the biggest advantages of being diagnosed early rather than late is that it allows you to know what is wrong providing a peace of mind. If the diagnosis is a major one it allows for treatment to begin. Some diseases, if caught early enough, allow you to be completely cured. In cancer and other progressive diseases early diagnosis can mean that the disease is not given the opportunity to spread to other organs or infect the rest of your body. Knowledge is power. ...throughout the bird’s body as described by (Wilson et al., 2007). Rather they are arranged in rows to produce distinct feather tracts. Each tract follows a specific arrangement with distinct angles which give broilers a common pattern in feather. About 75% of a bird’s skin surface is covered with feather tracts with the uncovered areas being mostly beneath the wings and on parts of the breast. The follicles are formed during embryo development and fixed once the chick is hatched. During broilers life time each bird undergoes two molts. The first occurs during the first two weeks of age where the down feathers are mostly shed and replaced with juvenile feathers and the second at about 4-5 weeks of age where new feathers push the first set of feathers out (Bacon et al., 2005). The head and neck of broilers are the last area of the body to go through molt. It is normal to see broilers with first set of down feathers still on their neck and head area at 5-6 weeks of age. In adult birds, feathers are used for courtship displays and their pattern of structure also in sex differentiation of broilers. Contour feathers protect the broilers against the sun, wind, rain and injury in range type settings. In more...
