...In the essay “The Joy of Reading and Writing,”Sherman Alexie claims reading saved his life. It explains Alexie’s life as an Indian boy and how reading and writing shaped his life. He learned to read despite having limited resources. Alexie proves that you do not have to be affluent to obtain an education. Alexie and his family come from an underprivileged Indian reservation in eastern Washington state. Although his family was considered very poor in American society, on the reservation he was from a middle class family. This shows how tough life was on the reservation and how much poverty there was. His father had a passion for reading and would buy cheap books from pawnshops. It rubbed off on Alexie and he would pick up books before he could...

...Farenheit 451 In Farenheit 451 there are many advantages and disadvantages. In the book it is nothing like how it would be in our world today. One of the many things that are different in our world today from Farenheit 451 is there knowledge. “ They are book-burners hailed as hereos, standing against the small tide of those who want to make everyone unhappy with conflicting theory and thought” quoted by Bulgazdi, Imola. I believe that he says this because in this word there are many people who want to do things to make people unhappy for no reason. He believes that these people in this world don’t have the choice to decide on their own to know wether or not if they likes books or not. No one in this world gets to choose on their own, its post world war two people belive that...

...Assignment 1: Sensory Perceptions "Memories establish the past; Senses percieve the present; Imaginations shape to future" said Toba Beta. Tatse, smell, sight, hearing, and touch, some of us can live without some of these senses others cannot. Whether it is some of your senses or all of your senses; have your senses ever mislead you? Have you ever thought about why they mislead you? I can go ahead and tell you one thing, your memory and imagination has a it to do with it. In the book American Gods Niel Gaiman stated "All we have to believe is our senses: the tools we use to percieve the world, our sight, our touch, our memory. If they lie to us, then nothing can be trusted.". Have you ever eaten something that made you sick and everytime you came across that food you would start to get that queasy feeling? I remember the first and last time I had chicken parmesean; after I ate it, I was throing up shortly after, I'm not sure whether it was due to food poisioning or if I didn't like chicken parmesean at all, but everytime I come across the smell of chicken parmesean I start to feel sick. My friend always tries to get me to try his mom's chicken parmesean, but the thought of me getting sick always pops up in my mind. Do you see part memory plays in a situation like this? Our memories influence our perceptions of things, in this situation it is with food. My memories influence on my perception of chicken parmesean could be considered a bad thing because it is hindering from...

...into five parts 1) Single or Multiple Costs of Capital 2) Proportion of capital from debt and equity 3) Cost of Debt 4) Cost of Equity 5) WACC In part one; we disagreed with Cohen where he decided to value the company as a whole instead of valuing each division separately. Since Nike is a multidivisional firm Cohen should of aggregated the values of the individual divisions and calculate a different cost of capital for each one. Since the exhibit 1 and 3 provide a consolidated income statement and balance sheet it is difficult to segregate the divisions. Therefore when we did our own calculations we used Cohen’s assumption of a single cost of capital. In part two Cohen allocated the weight of debt and equity based on book value. This method is incorrect because the allocation should be based on market value. The table below is our calculation of capital allocation. Table 1.1 | Price: Exhibit 4 | shares outstanding | Total | % of Capital | Debt | 95.60 | 271.50 | 25,955.40 | 69.43% | | | | | | | Price: Exhibit 2 | shares outstanding | Total | % of Capital | Equity | 42.09 | 271.50 | 11,427.44 | 30.57% | | | | 37,382.84 | 100.00% | Part 3 is the cost of debt. Cohen’s estimate of cost of debt is subjective because he did not include tax implications. We used the formula: cost of debt=Interest rate (1-tax rate)/Price of debt. The interest rate is the 6.75% paid semi-annually multiplied by two and tax rate we used the 2001...

...REM sleep The story of my search Sleep has been going on for lifetimes on end, but it wasn’t truly discovered until 1920.(“A Brief History of Sleep Research.”) Everybody needs sleep adults, kids, doctors, lawyers. The older you get the less time you spend in the REM stage of sleep. How much sleep do you actually remember your dreams and how much time do you dream in REM sleep? You spend about 20% of your sleep dreaming.(Russo) I started getting interested in REM sleep because I always wondered why we couldn’t remember our dreams. I started checking out books about why we dream and what our dreams mean. I asked my mom questions which she couldn’t answer because she hadn’t researched REM sleep. This first had an impact in 1961 by Nathaniel Kleitman and Eugene Aserinsky.(“A Brief History of Sleep Research.”)Studies have shown that what you eat and drink before you go to bed can affect how much you dream in the REM stage.(Nick)This first...

Where did it come from? What is it made of? Why is it called a donut or doughnut? Why do I care? Why? Because my beloved hubbuddy, frogdropping, challenged me to write about the history of the doughnut. So here is what I have learned from copious, painstaking research. History of the Doughnut To begin with, there are a number of conflicting statements about the origin of the doughnut; It may be Chinese in origin. But Germany, France, the Netherlands and Latin America also have valid claims. And this was hard to believe: archaeologists have unearthed fossilized bits of what look like – would you believe, doughnuts – underneath prehistoric Native American settlements in the southwestern U.S. Dutch olie-koecken (oily cakes) So no matter where they originated, here is how they came to America. Back in1669, there was a Dutch recipe for “olie-koecken” (oily cakes) which closely resembles today’s doughnut. It seems that Dutch and German cooks fried the left-over sweetened dough from baking bread in oil or pork fat and...
