A Veterinarian is defined as “a person trained in the medical treatment of animals” (“veterinarian Definition in the Cambridge English Dictionary"). Today, an estimation of 80,000 people work in this occupation. In fact, theses numbers will be increasing in the near future because the job outlook of this career is deemed excellent (McKay, Dawn Rosenburg). The history of veterinarians and the job itself are both very complex and interesting.

Vets are expected to learn and know general procedures, surgeries, and dentistry things, and also be able to operate the tools that come with. Vets tend to build relationships with clients by gathering and listening to them, and empathizing with any concerns they have. Veterinarians are expected always to stay up to date and aware of any medical information or changes in the vet medicine field(McKay, Dawn Rosenburg). It is important to keep a clean and orderly vet office where the pet will see the same doctor each time they visit to keep the animal and owner familiar and comfortable (Kross, Peter H). Like any job, there a few aspects that may not be a person’s favorite thing about this profession. Because emergencies can occur anytime, most vets get called in at any and all times of the day and night. This even includes evenings, weekends, and holidays (McKay, Dawn Rosenburg). The job of dealing with sickly animals and nervous, anxious owners can be stressful and at some times even emotionally draining to the vet. Between 4000 and 3000 B.C, Egyptians practiced earlier medical skills to improve and further advancements in this field. Some historical records show Egyptian hieroglyphs were found that record how these people used herbs to treat health problems and promote good health and treat domesticated animals as well. In 1761, the first vet school was founded in Lyon, France by a man named Claude Bourgelat. In efforts to stop a plague from killing a significant amount of cattle in France at the time, the school focused on studying anatomy and diseases of sheep, cattle, and horses. In 1712, the first cattle vaccinations developed in Europe, which were too used to end high numbers of cattle dying from plagues hitting the country. Over the next 10 years, schools were established in other countries, such as Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. In 1791, London Vet College established and developed vet science at a more professional level dedicated to animal medicine. At first, the wellbeing of horses was the main focus of the program because of the number of horses involved in the army.
