Even though same-sex marriage has recently been accepted in Washington by the Defense of Marriage Act on a Wednesday as stated in the article, right after ten in the morning, many other states in America have not yet legalized same-sex marriage. (Banco 2009). Though Washington has successfully accepted same-sex marriage, thirty-seven states still consider same sex marriage illegal (Banco 2009). Something is preventing some individuals, or states to accept same-sex marriage, and this is because of the expected framework of the society which lies upon religious and moral beliefs regarding ethnocentric fallacy. In the Article Narrative, “As Rulings Are Announced, Cheers and Tears Among Waiting Crowd”, and “Defense of Marriage Act Overturned”, Media narrative, it is now legal for same-sex marriage in Washington. ...community. Every Sunday morning we would gather to pick up trash along Highway 20, a well traveled road with a lot of trash along the forest land. Also, I spent a month helping to clear weeds at my school to improve the conditions of the fields used for athletics. In addition, I participated in the creation of a rain garden. A lot of planning and building went into the project, but it was worth it to make change happen in our community. Many of my hours come from tutoring my fellow peers. My sophomore and junior year I spent a few hours each week helping students with homework and preparing for exams. It was very fulfilling because I helped others see the importance of their education. Also, I am very involved in the community service that my church offers. During the summer I participate in the set up and leadership of Vacation Bible School. During a school breaks I go to a Tall Timber Christian camp and help prepare the camp for the upcoming summer. Ive learned these past four years that if I donate just a few hours a week of my time I can have a profound impact on my school and...

..."The day my heart, life and soul went from complete happiness to crumbled pieces" I was just a young, little girl. I was completely devoted to soccer, cheer leading as well as my grades in school. My family meant the world to me. I often say I had a "fairy tale" childhood with everything a child could ever dream of or wish for. I had a horse named Nutmeg, which together, she and I won many blue ribbons. I had a nice car when I got my license. We were members of the New Bern Golf & Country Club. Anything I wanted, I pretty much, always received. My family attended church together every Sunday. My siblings and I sang in the Children's Choir. My mom always had my two sisters and I dressed to a T, with ruffle socks or pantyhose. Our little brother always had an outfit on to match the three of us girls. We played T-Ball for our church. We participated in the Crop Walk every year. Mom always had her little angels in sponge curl rollers after dinner, prayers, book time and bath every Saturday night. We woke up on Sunday morning and had beautiful bouncy curls. Every Sunday morning, my whole family normally ate breakfast at Bojangles. We were the "precious little Outlaw's". We knew no harm, no violence, no profanity, and no exposure to alcohol, drugs or parents arguing. We were just simply four happy children with the best life a child thought they could or would ever have or ask for. After school one day, mom picked us up from school, took us to get a snack, as we did daily...

...At school I am a member of multiple clubs such as Next Steps Bible Club, CRU Bible Study, choir, track, and I was a member of the seventh grade volleyball team. Some of the other co-curricular activities that I enjoy participating in outside of school are guitar lessons, babysitting and confirmation through my church. One of the things that I am proud of is when I did the annual lemonade stand day. I was interviewed about the entrepreneurial lessons learned that I had learned from doing lemonade stands, and that interview was put in the paper. Also, in Carmel Dad’s Club Basketball I...

...Abandoned Church of God: Akron, Alabama. Digital photograph. ©2010 April Dobbins. Miracle from the forthcoming novel The Proximity of Distance Tope Folarin OUR HEADS MOVE simultaneously, and we smile at the tall, svelte man who strides purposefully down the aisle to the pulpit. Once there, he raises both of his hands then lowers them slightly. He raises his chin and says let us pray. “Dear Father, we come to you today, on the occasion of this revival, and we ask that you bless us abundantly, we who have made it to America, because we know we are here for a reason. We ask for your blessings because we are not here alone. Each of us represents dozens, sometimes hundreds of people back home. So many lives depend on us Lord, and the burden on our shoulders is great. Jesus, bless this service, and bless us. We ask that we will not be the same people at the end of the service as we were at the beginning. All this we ask of you, our dear savior, Amen.” The pastor sits, and someone bolts from the front row to the piano and begins to play. The music we hear is familiar and at the same time new; the bandleader punches up a pre-programmed beat on the cheap electronic piano and plays a few Nigerian gospel songs to get us in the mood for revival. We sing along, though we have to wait a few moments at the beginning of each song to figure out what he’s playing. We sing joyful songs to the Lord, then songs of redemption, and then we sing songs of hope, hope that tomorrow...

...Class and Professor, There were many factors that came together in 14th century Italy that caused the Renaissance to ignite. One major factor was the Medici family, which controlled Florence throughout much of the Renaissance, and played a large part in the patronage of the arts and the political development of the city (Sayre, 2011). Another factor was the wide spread belief in humanism, and Neoplatonism. One other factor could be that is was the end of the Middle Ages which rejected the ideas of old in favor of soteriology, and after enduring such hardships as the Black Death, people were read to fuse the old ideas of art, beauty, and individuality, with a fresh perspective. As Sayre (2011) states, Where the Middle Ages had been an age...

...Captain! My Captain is the poem about the brave captain of a ship who felt dead on the deck just when the mission is over and the victory is won. This means that the end of the leader is tragic. "The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won." The narrator of the poem, he is one of the men of the crew on the ship, delivers the message to the captain that their fearful and dangerous trip is done. "For you bouquets and ribboned wreaths for you the shores a-crowding." They won and people are flying the flag, the church bells are ringing to celebrate the victory, people are cheering and waiting to give him flowers to honour the captain but the problem is that his journey ended on the deck. "Fallen cold and dead." The captain doesn't answer because he lies cold and dead. The ship is safe because the anchor was dropped safe and sound. The victory is worth the effort. "Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!" The narrator of the poem is encouraging people to cheer and ring those bells loud as possible for the captain to show that he was a honourable man. The narrator says "Here Captain! Dear father!", "My Father." showing that the crew considered him as their father, someone close to them. "But I with mournful tread, walk the deck my Captain lies." The speaker will walk the deck with sadness where his captain lies cold and dead. The captain in this poem was a leader probably one of the greatest who completed his mission and paid with his life but for all the crewmembers he will...

...Sermon by Pastor Robert Earl Houston, Sr., Senior Pastor First Baptist Church, Frankfort, Kentucky Sunday, July 24, 2011 – 11:00 a.m. Morning Worship Series: “Get Back Up! (How to Recover From a Fall)” Text: Acts 16:16-22 16And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. 18And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. 19And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, 20And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, 21And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. 22And the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. Subject: “WHY SOME PEOPLE DON’T WANT TO SEE YOU GET BACK UP!” It is a marvelous thing to witness seeing someone turn their lives around. Whether you know them intimately or from afar, there is something that churns on the inside when a man or woman or boy or girl decides that they’ve had enough of...

...Throughout my life-long membership at Community Christian Church, I not only lead the children by assisting with activities and their Sunday school, but by leading through example. Leading through example is a fantastic opportunity to allow oneself and others to recognize them as a leader. On Sundays, I often assist with leading the children’s choir with hand motions and instruments, which develops my leadership and patience. In the summer, Vacation Bible School enables me to create friendships with the children I guide through the week. In addition to leading the children by example, I am a member of the bell choir which presents the older members of my congregation with an opportunity to view a young person participating in worship service. Also, as a spiritually flourishing youth at the church, I assist with the preparation of communion and participate in supplying the congregation with it during service. Deaconing allows me to understand the importance of the sacred sacrifice and to show my congregation I am capable of leading an essential task in worship. Participating in worship service, shows I’m a leader to not only benefit myself but to benefit others by taking...

...Katie Holmes Mrs. Foresee English 101 1.3 Film Review "Soul Surfer" is based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton, a champion surfer who in her early teens was attacked by a shark and lost almost all of her left arm. One month later, she was back on a surfboard, has since won several championships and is at age 21 a professional surfer. All of those are remarkable facts. My problem with "Soul Surfer" is that it makes it look too simple. Bethany (Anna Sophia Rob) has a loving family of professional surfers and a big, friendly dog. She lives in walking distance of the beach. She was and is a committed churchgoer and got great support from her spiritual leaders. She was an indomitable optimist with a fierce competitive spirit. But there had to be more to it than that. I applaud her faith and spirit. I give her full credit for her determination. I realize she is a great athlete. But I feel something is missing. There had to be dark nights of the soul. Times of grief and rage. The temptation of nihilism. The lure of despair. Can a 13-year-old girl lose an arm and keep right on smiling? The flaw in the storytelling strategy of "Soul Surfer" is that it doesn't make Bethany easy to identify with. She's almost eerie in her optimism. Her religious faith is so unshaken, it feels taken for granted. The film feels more like an inspirational parable than a harrowing story of personal tragedy. Even its portrait of her recovery and rehabilitation is perfunctory. There's a particularly...

...moderation is seen throughout the play. Everything in moderation is a principle of life that helps protect one’s life from harm. Knowledge is seen as power especially in the play, Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. This play was written during the Renaissance, which literally means “rebirth”. During this time, people were exploring theories in various studies such as physics, astronomy and biological sciences. Even though it was a time of exploration and discovery, the Roman Catholic Church still played a huge role in the every day lives of the people. The church enforced a strict hierarchal system where everything had a particular place in society. This strict atmosphere that was created by the church was hypocritical to the changing times. People were exploring and learning about things that were once forbidden knowledge. Prior to this movement of exploration, the church held the ultimate power. The people were illiterate and were forced to believe the doctrines of the church. The Renaissance sparked curiosity in people to learn about topics that had not been studied before. Faustus was already a very accomplished man in different fields such as medicine, law, and theology. With all of these different degrees, he still did not feel satisfied and wanted to explore magic contradicting his theology degree. He saw magic as a way to become powerful and receive materialistic things such as jewels and diamonds. “The miracles that magic will perform will...
