...Case study analysis CASE METHOD EXERCISE: ABERCROMBIE & FITCH (by Meg Connolly, in Marketing Ethics: Cases and Readings (2006), edited by Patrick E. Murphy and Gene R. Laczniak) Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) of today differs dramatically from the original waterfront shop in New York that carried high-quality clothing suitable for camping, fishing and hunting. The A&F of 2002 can be found in virtually any major mall in America, and its target market includes preteen and teenagers. Indeed, the shift has been rather dramatic, and it could certainly be asserted that the direction A&F has recently headed strays substantially from the original vision of its founders. The style of clothes offered by A&F could be described as worn, casual, and rather rugged. Some critics contend the merchandise at A&F is seemingly overpriced considering that it is arguably no more unique than any other store of its kind geared toward the same market. One aspect of A&F that does make it unique from other stores, however, is their catalogue that was first published in 1997 and comes out four times a year with a spring break, summer, back-to-school, and Christmas issue. The Quarterly is a magazine-hybrid that, in addition to the clothing portion of the catalogue, has interviews with actors, musicians, directors and even some famous scholars. Fashion legend Bruce Weber does many of the photographs that appear throughout the magazine, and “these photos depict young, healthy, presumably red-blooded...

...Psychologists Study Music in the Workplace Serria Dawson LAC International Assignment 1 Conducting a study of music in call centers will enable companies to research the effects on the staffs mood, productivity and performance. In my personal experiences listening to calming music can promote positive reactions when CSR’s (Customer Service Representatives) are talking with difficult or angry customers on the phone or in person the CSR’s are capable of managing the difficult customer by remaining calm and able to offer the best solution for the situation. Of the five types of psychological research, naturalistic observation would be applied. The researchers would only observe and record the behaviors of the employees without any manipulation to the call center environment. While listening to different styles of music playing in the background researchers will record the reactions of CSR and the effects it has on how they perform and interact with co workers. The study can then be repeated without music to enable comparative data After collecting the data from the observations, research can then be found in other similar Case Studies. The research would have been done on a small group of CSR’s in a similar setting with and without music playing in the background. The study of the effects of music showing statistics of mood, productivity, and team interactions while listening to various styles of music such as classical, country and...

... Many people think this is the case that the Bible had been thrown out of public schools, but it was really the type of Bible reading that had been thrown out of Schools. There was a PA law that said, “At least ten verses from the Holy Bible shall be read, without comment, at the opening of each public school on each school day. Any child shall be excused from such Bible reading, or attending such Bible reading, upon the written request of his parent or guardian.” Edward Schempp challenged this law saying that the state should not be making Bible reading mandatory. The Supreme Court favored Schempp and declared “this type” of Bible reading in the public schools to be unconstitutional. They did however say, “It certainly may be said that the Bible is worthy of study for its literary and historic qualities.” Florey v. Sioux Falls School District This federal case dealt with Religious Holidays. The Sioux Falls school policy read, “Music, art, literature, and drama having religious themes or basis are permitted as part of the curriculum for school sponsored activities and programs if presented in a prudent and objective manner and as a traditional part of the cultural and religious heritage of the particular holiday.” However, the ACLU sued the school district over this policy, but ended up losing at both the local and federal level. The Supreme Court favored the inclusion of recognition of a holiday. Stone v. Graham This case dealt with a Kentucky law that required...

...there was that bold move of implementing the K to 12 program where basic education will last for 12 years instead of the traditional 10 years. And maybe also because of climate change, just recently, there were reports about Malacañang being open to studying proposals to change the school calendar. However, the Congress still has the final say on the matter. This means that the academic calendar would run from August to May or September to June instead of June to March. This was intended to avoid the suspension of class because of typhoons just like last year, about 25 typhoons, including the Nov. 9 super typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines and also to copy the academic calendar of most countries in order to attract foreign students to study in the Philippines and assist the enrollment abroad of Filipino students and teachers. This will also allow Philippines a greater synchronization with the ASEAN, Northeast Asian and American and European universities since a lot of training programs and activities of summer institutes happen in June and July in which, in the proposed academic calendar, these months don’t have classes. At present, five universities named University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, University of Sto. Tomas and Adamson University have already expressed their plans to adapt the proposed academic calendar. Looking at these, it can be seen how the education system in the country is intended to be patterned after the education...

...different tasks at hand and what needs to take place prior to the opening show. Everyone seems to be on a different page but is eager to work together. After the meeting, Francis finds that there are 20 tasks to be completed prior to opening night and out of these 20 there are 8 different critical tasks that are considered milestones to reaching the goal of putting off a successful show. Francis also finds that there are four different departments that will be working on getting the show ready for opening night. The big question is, how will all these tasks and departments come together to work on the same program to ensure a successful show in January. The answer to this is through project management. Project management charts and work break down structure will bring everyone together on the same page and ensure proper efficiency to putting off a successful show through integration of tasks and departments while meeting tight time deadlines. ...Job Dissatisfaction and High Turnover at a Tire Plant I just read a case study from Harvard Business Publishing called “The Treadway Tire Company: Job Dissatisfaction and High Turnover at the Lima Tire Plant.” It was a look at the factors affecting this specific attitude (job dissatisfaction) and this specific behavior (high turnover) amongst foremen at this major plant for this pseudonym tire company. tire_plant The plant had many problems, chiefly: Morale and productivity were imperiled. The plant was not satisfactorily developing new managers. Relations between management and the union were threatened. The newly-transferred director of HR at this plant had her job cut out for her. She made it her top priority to reversing this trend and had to have an actionable plan in to her boss after the the annual Christmas break (within a month’s time). She knew that by solving these problems, she could make the plant the number one plant in the company for productivity and lowest cost. And contrary to what a lot of managers believer, high turnover does cost companies a lot (and not just money)! Even though the aspect of the company presented in the case study was limited, I still think significant observations can be drawn of the the environment at play in this case. The foremen’s supervisors (the general supervisors and area supervisors) seem to be making the fundamental attribution error. That is, they seem to be attributing poor performance amongst foremen to...

LaDuew GB520: Strategic Human Resource Management Case Study: Treadway Tire Company 2 Treadway Tire Company When Ashley Wall had just finished attending a meeting at work, the plant manager Brandon Bellingham stated “we have a serious problem” (Skinner & Beckham, 2008, p.1). Wall had just presented the figures for the plants projected turnover rates for foremen the year ending in 2007. Bellingham was not happy because they had 50 foremen at their Lima Plant and in 2007 23 of those positions were turned over. When the Treadway plant closed in Greenville, South Carolina in 2006 Ashley Wall was transferred to the plant in Lima where her position was going to be the Director of Human Resources, since she already had over 10 years of work experience in the Human Resource department with Treadway Company. Wall had decided to make it her top priority to do what she could to reduce the foremen turnover rate at the Lima Plant since it had the highest foremen turnover rate out of all of the other Treadway plants in their division. Wall planned...

...CASE STUDY IV-8 Mary Morrison’s Ethical Issue (Revised) Mary Morrison, a second-semester sophomore business major at Big State University, was unpacking the new PC that her family had given her for Christmas when she discovered that, except for the Windows operating system, no software was included with the machine. Although the new PC was an adequate computer, it was an inexpensive machine, and one way that the store kept the price low was to not include software. Mary was concerned because she knew that she would need a good word processor, a spreadsheet program, and some presentation software, and she thought that this software would be included with the computer. According to her friends, Microsoft Office Professional was the recommended suite of software for business students. Mary quickly checked around the university and found that she could buy Microsoft Office Professional at the special price of $199. However, a friend, Frank Taylor, offered to let her copy his Microsoft Office Professional onto the new machine. Mary was uneasy about accepting Frank’s offer because she had learned in her computer literacy class that copying copyrighted software was illegal and was tantamount to stealing it. She told Frank that she needed to think about it. Frank could not understand her hesitation. “Everybody does it,” he explained. Mary’s Background Mary’s family was reasonably well-to-do. Her mother and father had met at Big State University and had gotten married when they both...

...increase the selling price of his T-shirts because there will almost certainly be a higher demand. d) i) Done on sheet. ii) Done on sheet 1e) Primary market research is research that has been carried out by the business or individual. It is specific to only that business so therefore it is more accurate than secondary market research. One reason why Pierre carried out primary market research is because it is much more accurate than secondary market research. As shown in the case study, secondary market research could only give him qualitative data based on opinions from the area, whereas primary market research would allow quantitative data for Pierre. There is much more accuracy involved within this type of market research, as it is specific only to Pierre’s T-shirt business and so when he forms his business plan outlying the budgets (total costs), there are less mistakes made. For example, the primary market research indicates that sales would be very seasonal with peaks at summer and Christmas. This would then inform Pierre that he needs to buy up stock in the months before these times so that he can account...

...Independent Novel Study: Wave Part A: Plot 1. The point of view in which the story is written is of Sam and Beth Brooks, two siblings who have been separated at Christmas in 2004, with Sam on vacation away from home and Beth forcibly staying at university for a swim meet that she must attend. I believe that the author chose to write from these perspectives because both characters are greatly affected greatly by the main plot, though dealing with it in two different situations. Sam is experiencing the entire story from Phuket, Thailand, where they are hit with a tsunami. Beth was in New York at her dorm, first learning about the tsunami from her boyfriend, Tad. Both characters have different feelings about what has happened, and we, as the readers, get to hear both perspectives. 2. The story takes place on the one hand in Phuket, Thailand during Christmas break of 2004, and on the other side of the world in New York, where Beth's dorm and university are located. The difference that the setting makes is that if most of the characters were not located in Thailand where the tsunami happened, and majority of the story did not take place there, we would only be privy to secondary information of what was happening. Beth was only able to watch the huge tsunami unfold on television, being an unbelievable 27-hour flight away from the wave. Sam having been in Phuket even before the tidal wave hit was a primary witness...

...2. Identify at least three (3) "bad ways to break the bad news" in physician-patient communication. In your answer identify ways to handle this situation better. Communicating bad news is an essential skill for physicians and anybody directly involved with the care of patients. Even do, many of them find it challenging to convey bad information, especially when this involves life-threatening or terminal illnesses. Some may feel inadequately prepared or inexperienced. Others fear the news will be distressing and adversely affect the patient, family, or the therapeutic relationship. Deliver the bad news is always difficult; nevertheless, doctors have to find the proper way off doing it. According to (Kastenbaum, 2009, box 4-2 pp 118) the following are clear examples of “bad ways to break the bad news" in physician-patient communication. * Give the bad news right away and get it over with. * Give all facts at one time. * Impress patients and family with medical knowledge. * Tell the diagnosis, and then move on. * Make sure you have broken through denial. * Stretch the truth if necessary to cheer up the patient. * Make it clear that there is nothing more to do for the patient. I clearly remember after my father had his brain surgery, we saw many health care providers. His primary doctor would always say he was doing better, even though his health continued deteriorating. The neurosurgeon would use fancy medical terminology to describe the tumor’s...
