On the day before thanksgiving I fell asleep with one thought on my mind...TURKEY! But that thought changed the second I woke up. It was a dark misty morning and a blizzard had just passed through. My parents were trapped at a hotel trying to get home for thanksgiving. I heard a strange sounds, pounding sounds. That was the moment I knew there was a problem. I ran downstairs and saw a giant living turkey in my kitchen. I screamed at the top of my lungs, “HELP!” The giant turkey and his family were sitting at the table with giant pitchforks and butcher knifes. They looked as if they were waiting for someone or something to eat… That’s when I suddenly felt a tap on my shoulder, and behind me was a GIANT turkey with fangs and blood dripping

Relationship Between Religion and International Trade

...Relationship between Religion and International Trade Hilal AKINCI, Yeditepe University, İstanbul 2014 The main aim of this paper is to show whether or not religion has impacts on international trade and how it does happen. To do so, researches about the topic will be covered and some worldwide statistics are gathered together. Empirical Studies There are few empirical studies about impacts of religion on international trade or its relationship with international trade. In shared research of Emilia Justyna Powell, University Alabama, and Stephanie J. Rickard, London School of Economics, impacts of Islamic law on international trade is examined. Two models which are monadic and dyadic techniques are used in this study. The main purpose of them to demonstrate whether or not countries governed by Islamic law are effected regarding their international trade although they believe that “the importance of countries’ legal systems for trade has declined over time, possibly due to the increased role of international arbitration bodies and/or the standardization of international sales contracts (Powell & and Rickard, 2010). This research is important as being the first direct test of the effect of Islamic law on countries’ trade relations. The researched draws our attention to the situation that trade can be conceptualized as the aggregate flow of goods and services between countries but in fact that flows are a series of contracts between buyer and seller countries. Gallon Has Arrived

...Income inequality damages growth, OECD warns Chris Giles in London Rising income inequality over the past 30 years has damaged growth rates in rich countries by limiting educational opportunities for poor children, according to research by the OECD, the group of mainly rich nations. The finding that higher inequality harms economic performance mirrors the results of a similar study by the International Monetary Fund earlier this year. But the OECD’s analysis goes further because it concentrates on rich countries and attempts to establish the exact cause of inequality’s harmful effects on growth. The OECD said the research showed governments should focus policy on ensuring poorer children gain better education and the supporting people into employment. As inequality has moved higher up the political agenda in rich countries, there has been a flurry of research papers looking into the link between inequality and growth. Clear conclusions have been difficult to achieve because economic theory is ambiguous and the subject has been plagued by research finding spurious associations in the data rather than meaningful causal relationships. Higher inequality can hinder growth by destroying trust in society, hitting investment in skills and reducing demand growth for goods and services from poorer families who tend to spend more of their incomes. But it also provides greater incentives for people to strive to climb the ladder of opportunity and can provide necessary savings to...

Twitter Mood Predicts the Stock Market

...states that affect their collective decision making? By extension is the public mood correlated or even predictive of economic indicators? Here we investigate whether measurements of collective mood states derived from largescale Twitter feeds are correlated to the value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) over time. We analyze the text content of daily Twitter feeds by two mood tracking tools, namely OpinionFinder that measures positive vs. negative mood and Google-Profile of Mood States (GPOMS) that measures mood in terms of 6 dimensions (Calm, Alert, Sure, Vital, Kind, and Happy). We cross-validate the resulting mood time series by comparing their ability to detect the public’s response to the presidential election and Thanksgiving day in 2008. A Granger causality analysis and a Self-Organizing Fuzzy Neural Network are then used to investigate the hypothesis that public mood states, as measured...

Our results indicate that the accuracy of DJIA predictions can be significantly improved by the inclusion of specific public mood dimensions but not others. Kudler Fine Foods

...Kudler Fine Foods – Marketing Research LaToya Grant MKT 421 Bryan Rice January 26, 2012 Kathy Kudler discovered a way to cope with the stress in her life by preparing gourmet meals and shopping for gourmet items. With no upscale gourmet food stores in her area she decided to open her own. She left her very successful day job and started a chain of Kudler Fine Food Stores. Kudler Fine Foods is an upscale store with three locations in the San Diego area, each in high-end shopping centers. The stores offer a fine selection of baked goods, pastries, fresh produce, meats, seafood, packaged goods, cheeses, and other specialty items. All items are made to order and baked goods and pastries are prepared on site. They offer over a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables including 16 different kinds of apples. Their meat comes from organic farms and Kudler also carries tropical fruits and spices. Kudler is also popular because of the amount of and types of cheese they carry, “250 varieties from 21 different countries” (Strategic Plan, 2003). Importance of Marketing The first store opened in La Jolla in 1998. It is located in a well populated area with high end tastes, homes there are worth about $2 million. ...Developing Negotiation Skills in the Classroom: A Case Simulation Maureen Hannay Troy University ABSTRACT Effective negotiation skills are required in all positions and at all levels of modern organizations. Employees in the human resources department utilize these skills on a daily basis when they deal with such items as new hire packages, salary increases, performance issues, labor contracts, and terminations. Research indicates that by using practical, real-life simulated negotiation scenarios, learners can develop more effective negotiating skills. This paper introduces a case where students can be assigned to a management team or a union team to negotiate a mock collective bargaining agreement. Guidance is provided on how to apply the case in the classroom and facilitate the discussion at the conclusion of the exercise. INTRODUCTION Employees in every organization utilize negotiating skills on a daily basis. From negotiating deadlines and workloads to prices of supplies and contracts with unions, negotiations range from the small and mundane to the large and exceptional. A company with effective negotiating capabilities can gain a competitive advantage, reduce costs, increase profits and improve relationships (Masters, Albright & Irr, 2003). When identifying the ten managerial roles that leaders perform to accomplish organizational objectives, Mintzberg (1973) classified the role of “Negotiator” as one of the essential decisional roles that must be executed by managers...

Ethics Paper - Consumerism

...Grant Still MGMT 320 Section C November 18, 2014 Consumerism: Gotta Buy ‘Em All It is the day after Thanksgiving, known colloquially to Americans as “Black Friday”. Hundreds of thousands of shoppers line up outside of department stores, anxiously waiting to get their hands on the latest of gadgets and gizmos to purchase for families, friends, and loved ones for the holiday season. Many of the retailers in America have offered attractive promotional sales on this day to attract high traffic and volume in their stores. Realizing this, consumers in America who take a part in Black Friday see this as a fight to the death. This “fight to the death” literally came true in the year 2013, as one death and fifteen injuries resulted from the madness of the shopping event, according to BlackFridayDeathCount.com. On the flip side for businesses, Americans spent an average of $407.02 from the Thursday through Sunday that bookends Black Friday, as stated by the National Retail Federation. This topsy-turvy day recognized by a vast majority of American culture has been seen by many as the yearly peak of the country’s ever-increasing trend towards consumerism. Consumerism, the belief that goods give meaning to individuals and their roles in society, has presented itself to Americans in both a positive and negative spirit. On the one hand, consumer spending drives the economy, gives consumers a vast myriad of retailers to choose from, and renders shopping as a social experience. ...

...minority groups. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Overview of Race and Hispanic Origin: 2010 (2011), “American Indian or Alaska Native refer to a person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central American) and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment” (Humes, Jones, & Ramirez, 2011, p. 3). 2,475,956 out of 308, 745,538 people that live in America are believed to be American Indian/Alaska Native, including those who report affiliations with tribes and South and Central American Indian groups (Humes et. al,, 2011, p. 4). This number is questionable because of the controversy about American Indian/Alaska Native citizenship, which will be explained in the latter part of this paper. As social workers, it is important to be knowledgeable about the American Indian/Alaska Native population. Thoroughly examining the origins and history of oppression that this group has, and continues to, endure is one of the best ways to learn...
