A DAY WHEN EVERYTHING WENT WRONG
Sandy Smith
AIU ONLINE

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 will always be remembered as a day when everything went wrong. I never in a million years could have predicted this day. I woke up late, which rarely ever happens and the day went downhill from there. I am extremely blessed and thankful to be able to tell my story. I woke up late on this day. I needed to be up by 8:00 am; instead I did not wake up until 9:30 am. I had a breakfast date with a friend at 10:00 am. Needless to say, I had to call her to reschedule since I was not going to be on time. She seemed slightly irritated with me, because this was the second time I had to reschedule. Since I missed my breakfast date, I decided to do a few loads of laundry before going to work at
1:00pm. After putting my first load into the wash, I went to the kitchen to make coffee. I went to get the coffee canister only to realize I was out of coffee. Feeling somewhat defeated, I sat at the kitchen table pondering the events of my morning, thus far. After sitting in the kitchen for about forty minutes or so, I went to put the laundry into the dryer. The dryer had blown a fuse and would not operate. At this point, I seriously thought, this has got to be
Some type of bad dream that I was having. I did not know whether to laugh or cry at the events of the day. I did neither. After a while it was time to prep for work. I got ready for work, and even made it there without any major catastrophe happening. Things were looking up for me, or so I thought. I was a few hours into my shift when I started experiencing chest pains. This was odd because I had never experienced this before. I just attributed the chest pains to my bad morning. The pain became increasingly worse to the point where I felt I needed to seek medical attention. My fiancée picked me up from work and drove me to the local hospital. At this point, I am in a state of sheer panic. By the time I arrived at the hospital, I had the worse headaches I had ever experienced in my life. I am a migraine suffer and I get the frequently. However, this was a pain I had never before experienced. During my assessment, and EKG was done to rule out a heart attack. The EKG was negative. The doctor then ordered a CAT scan be done of my head. I was not prepared for what was to come next. The doctor came back to my room with a grim look on her face. She informed me that Life Flight was on its way to transport me to another hospital. She stated, “Ms. Smith you have bleeding on the brain and we need to get you to UPMC hospital in Pittsburgh right away.” I was lost and could not exactly understand the ramifications of what she was saying. My mom, fiancée, and both daughters were in the room with me. My daughters were crying and I remember my youngest asking, “Mommy are you going to die?” I did not have time to answer her, nor was I sure how to answer. The Life Flight crew had arrived and was ushering everyone out of the room to prepare me for the transfer. I remember kissing my family goodbye not really knowing if I would see any of them again. I do not really recall much of the flight. I was given medication to help with the pain. I do remember the flight nurse telling me at some point that our estimated time of arrival was twelve minutes. After arriving at UPMC , the last thing that I remember on this day, was in ICU. There many different doctors that came in to assess me and talk with me. I honestly cannot remember much of those conversations. I do remember brain aneurysm being thrown around a lot. I was hooked-up to all a type of monitoring devices, my blood was being drawn, and medication was given. I just wanted to see my family. I truly thought I was going to die. After what seemed like an eternity, my family members were permitted back to see me two at a time. When, I saw the tears in my father’s eyes, I was convinced I was not going to survive this. The pain was horrific and I was terrified. I prayed a lot. During the night, I was closely monitored. A cerebral angiogram was scheduled for the next morning. This procedure involved going through my groin with a catheter which was guided to my brain. The doctors attempted to coil the aneurysm, however it was unsuccessful. I had to have surgery a few days later. The surgery involved clamping the aneurysm and it was successful. I was in the hospital for little over two weeks. I am one blessed individual. June 14, 2011 was truly a day that everything went wrong. Who would have that with all the minor things that happened that day that I would have been fighting for my life at the end of it? Being a survivor of a brain aneurysm has taught me to appreciate life more. I no longer sweat the small stuff and I live each day as if it were going to be my last.

When Parents Make the Decision - the Happiest Day of Your Life

...We have all seen movies and read stories about a kid who does not feel like he is in a place where he belongs. It is often a decision, which is not made by themselves but by their parents, who almost always got the best intentions for their child. The reason for this kind of decision is often caused by lack of communication between the child and it is parents and more about the advantages for the parents than their child. ‘’The happiest day of live’’ is a good example of how parents’ decision may become a disaster for their child due to lack of communication between them and Charles. The story is taking place in Sussex, which is an upper class area in the south of England. The story also tells us that it is a rich environment; when they were going to the school, they drove through a road with highly priced period houses (p. 1 l. 3). The school applies to upper class families, as you can read about how good the facilities is in the school and some of the facilities are not that common for boarding schools. The school is called St. Edwards’s Preparatory School, which is running by the headmaster James Spokes. By the name of the school you can also tell that the school is applying for the families with a lot of money, as it is a preparatory school, which means that it is a fee-paying school. It is a 3rd person omniscient narrator who tells the story, from Charles’ point of view. The narrator is partially omniscient since some of Charles’ feelings are known;...

Paid and Unpaid Personal Leaves

...Introduction: When an organization is recruiting and wanting to keep that employee for a long time in that company, then the benefits it is offering such as employee leave and for how many days it is willing to pay for personal leave is very important. Employers offer employees leave in many forms such as vacation, sick time, personal time, paid time as a part of benefit package. These policies really make a difference. They develop a positive working relationship between employee and employer and also increase the commitment of the employee towards the organization which leads to more profits, promotes good working habits and help human resource manager to easily keep track of the employee attendance. This research paper is about paid and unpaid personal leaves for employees. These leaves are not under leave of absence laws. They are not required by the federal law to be granted to the employees and they are purely given by the company as a benefits package or bonus. In the body of the paper, I will discuss about the definition of these days, main goal of these leaves, number of days, rules and regulations on how to use these days, a new policy being introduced in many organizations known as PTO (Paid Time Off Policy) to benefit employees and managers in the place of paid personal leave, benefits and disadvantages. Four Day School Week Research Paper

... changing education for the better. What is it? The four- day school week! I personally feel that a five-day school week has many cons, and is not helping, but hurting my education. Sturgis Williams Middle School would be greatly improved by switching to a four-day school week, helping students, teachers, and administrators alike. To begin with, Sturgis Williams Middle School’s costs will be greatly reduced by removing a day from the traditional school week length. Without one of the days of the school week, SWMS will not have to pay for buses, saving the school money. In addition, SWMS will save money on utilities. The toilets, sinks, and drinking fountains will not be used five days a week, but four. Since the school would not have to pay for buses or utilities, the extra money could be used for other needs in school, improving the value of everyone’s education, including mine. As a result of the four-day school week, SWMS would save money, making it a better place....

The Days That Changed My Life

...The Days That Changed My Life… Amanda Mathis ECPI University The days that changed my life forever were two of the greatest gifts I could have ever imagined! I was preparing myself for months leading up to those days but I had no idea when those days came it would change who I was, or even how I thought. It took a few days after to realize that all of this wasn’t a dream it became reality. I hoped and prayed for these days to come one day. I couldn’t have been more thrilled when they finally arrived. I keep thinking to myself is there anything I need to do better, what I needed to do, how my life will be different and there is no going back. All I could do was breath and enjoy every precious moment God has given me. When all else fails I know these were the days I can look back and always know I had done something right. July 8, 2009 came and what a day this was. This is the day I had my son Kelbyn and I remember this day very well. I woke up at 5 am to get ready and head to the hospital. We finally arrived at 6 am little did I know what I was about to go through. What I did know for sure was I was going to hold my son for the first time in my arms that day. By 8 am they started to induce me and this process wasn’t too pleasant. I was actually in labor for hours and pushed I know for 2 hours. The incredible thing that actually kept me going was getting to actually watch my son be born. Was it the craziest thing I have ever seen or even went through, yes it was by far? Them...

Time Management

...system, use the right to-do list, or process your tasks in the right way” (Bregman, 2013). This statement is false because there is so much that must be done and there is not enough time in a day to finish all of the tasks we have at hand. Living in a world filled with all this technology is still not enough to finish our day to day tasks even if we work for every single hour in the day and night (Bregman, 2013). We would still not be able to keep up with our work load along with our personal tasks that must be done, too. Thus, having minimal time in a day is why individuals stress over their work which causes more problems. Mastering time management strategies will help individuals tremendously in their work and personal lives, and decrease the amount of problems that arise in their days due to poor time management skills. Time Management Strategies It takes practice to manage one’s time and there are a number of steps one can take to help him or her in completing their everyday tasks. According to Wood Tobé-Coburn college students, making a list of all the tasks they have to complete is the most affective time management strategy. Students say they make an agenda of their day to day activities that must be completed, and then cross off the tasks they finish as they go through the day. The concept of making a list to help stay on track of responsibilities can be very...

...On typical school days, a person may or may not have a good resource that creates a positive classroom environment to make the school day increasingly productive and vigorous. However, some days are not considered to be a “good day.” There are many components that make a great day. I have come to understand that the following components a good school day must consist of is a good teacher, a great deal of food served, and positive classroom behavior. Throughout my high school years, I often had poor school days not always as good as they seemed because the lack of a caring teacher, however, when my previous supportive, loving teacher came in my presence it made my day better. For example, I remember a typical day at school when I was struggling with solving a math problem. I did not have any idea or thought on what steps I should take in order to get an accurate answer. As I sat there for about five minutes, searching for examples to gain an understanding of the concept, I still had no answer to the problem. However, when my teacher, Ms. Lau had acknowledged the problem I encountered, she took the initiative to assist me not only with that particular problem, but in general. Ever since that incident, my teacher has been an outstanding support system for me. She has helped me in ways that aid me to figure out how to solve problems effectively when I approached them. During the next couple of days, when I was given an assignment, I was able to use strategies she had taught me previously...
