...Mylon Richard Mr. Joubert English 101G1 16 October 2012 Fans in the Stands Professional sports have become one of the most popular industries in the world today. The media spends billions of dollars on advertisements with billboards, commercial, and merchandise. Teams spend millions of dollars on professional athletes all for one reason, the fans because if the fans are happy then the owners are happy. The fans ticket sales and merchandise purchases are what keeps all the sport teams around and prevents professional athletes from losing their jobs. Fans are the most crucial part of any franchise. There are three types of fans in the sports world, average fans, fanatics, and fair-weather fans. A diehard’s favorite team is basically their second religion. The diehard fan would be the one who knows the team like the back of their hand. They are the persons that know the name, number, position, and maybe the height and weight of every play on the field for their team. They could win an argument against the world’s greatest lawyer, being that the argument is about their team. They will wear their team’s colors with great pride whether the team is winning or losing. They are so dedicated to their team to point of sitting through a hurricane, blizzard, or the blazing heat just because of their love for the team. Diehards are the one fan that bought their season ticket passes for the next season five years in advance to make sure they get seats with the best view. They make time...

...socially acceptable and even encouraged in some circles. One such prejudice is over hobbies. It sounds silly but there is only a slight difference in degree. Here are some examples. Look at a sports arena, just about any sport and you’ll find diehard fans dressed in their teams’ colors or as their mascot. Many will chuckle and move on with the game. However take this same scene to, say, a sci-fi convention and you’ll find the same diehard fans dressed as Storm Troopers and Starfleet Officers. The difference? Ridicule. The Sports fan is merely “showing his spirit” whereas the sci-fi fan is “some loser who needs a life”. [ (Garmon) ] “And all I could think of was how grotesquely unfair it is that science fiction and comics fans are tagged as nerds and dweebs and treated in a condescending manner when sports fans are just as ‘bad’ if not ‘worse.’ … Maybe the only way science fiction and comic book conventions will gain genuine respectability is if they become designed, not for socialization or debate, but about being as aggressive as possible about separating fans from their money. You know; Like pro sports.” This is because we’re a minority. We are considered outsiders. But there is no difference between the two. Both are fans of a hobby they love and enjoy, occasionally to an extreme degree, but still a similar passion as others who may share their interest to any degree. However, as it is socially acceptable to be a sports fanatic, you may get some good natured jeers...

... its everywhere! Ranging from face paint to overalls. Pirate flags everywhere you look. Its rivalry weekend, it’s insane. As you look around you will see the dedicated. Also known as “the diehard fans”. These people are your most loyal and fanatic fans. We might not be a caliber team of The University of Alabama but we are here too. Our fans will sure let you know that as well. No matter what team you watch, no matter their record, the fanatics will be there in support. These are my favorite types of fans, these fans will make your experience one to remember if it is your first game. These fans will give you the time of your life. These fans are true fans, through everything. We also have the student body or as we call them “The Student Pirate Club”. These students are students of the college. They might not always be sober, but at least they are there staying loyal to the purple and gold. DowdyFicklen Stadium seats approximately 50,000 spectators. One of the biggest parts of that number would be the students. Seated in the Boneyard, these students will sure voice themselves from the stands, usually at the referees. In 2011, one student ever streaked on the field. How dedicated could one possibly be? If you want to have fun at games, then get into the Boneyard. Almost the best fans of all,...

... One aspect of the Johnny Cupcakes brand that differentiates itself from other clothing companies is the visibility, caring and community driven tone set by all Johnny Cupcakes employees. By producing a shirt that pays homage and references the community would only further strengthen our bond with the brand. The 9 JCAddict team members and Tom De Vriendt collaborated on the best way to make this dream a reality. We felt having the shirt set up as a pre-order with a minimum sales quota would be the most beneficial in terms of eliminating risk for the Johnny Cupcakes brand. Mr. De Vriendt’s “fan art” post received 89 likes and produced 46 comments of positive support for the design in less than 13 hours. While we understand this Facebook sample size is small, we believe the design is dynamic enough to attract less “hardcore” fans/collectors of the brand as well as the hardcore fans/collectors. By setting the design up as pre-order, the worry of left over stock is completely eliminated. In a little over a year, our team created an Instagram account and a Facebook group with 1,536 and 1,095 followers/members respectively. We are continually growing around 30-40 new members per month....

...the need to push the limits of these vehicles for more than just cargo and passengers. By the beginning of the 20th century, automobile racing took off in both Europe and the United States with each having their own fledgling racing circuits. This trend continued up to present time with two of the world’s most popular racing series: WRC (World Rally Championship), which was launched in 1973 by the FIA (The International Automobile Federation.) and NASCAR (The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), which was founded by William France, Sr., in 1948. Although both WRC and NASCAR are extreme and captivating in their own respects there are great differences and a few similarities in the skill level of the drivers, the cars, and the fans. First, is the huge gap in the skill level between the WRC driver and the NASCAR driver. WRC drivers are some the most versatile and talented drivers in the world. WRC drivers have an endurance that cannot be matched. Each rally is a 3 day event covering typically 15 to 30 courses, or stages, which together can add up to thousands of miles. The NASCAR driver’s one day stint requires him to tackle the course, which is a combination of boring straightaways and left turns repeating over and over, until the required 500 laps have been met. This pattern continues on for a mind numbing 3 to 5 hours. A WRC rally driver’s...

...A united university through sports is often a rarity. College football can be one of the most intense experience in college sports. The passion and energy is nearly impossible to encapsulate into a single feeling. Sports teams and their fans share a bond that cannot be recon with. The colleges with prestigious athletic backgrounds have a numerous alumni who carry pride into every game day. A lot of fans equal a lot of fun, but attending an school with diehard fans is best part of college sports. College football has gained the reputation for becoming the most celebrated sport. The best way to celebrate a college football game is tailgating. Tailgating and college football have become such a tradition that it is hard to see one happening without the other. Tailgating is a legendary activity that I could not wait to participate in. Surprisingly enough, I was able to find my way onto the tailgating scene for the University of Georgia football game. They were facing University of Tennessee which was a big rivalry in the south. Both of these teams compete in the South Eastern conference, also known as the SEC. The rivalry brought a lot of excitement around campus which meant heavy tailgating. I was brought up to speed on the tailgating by a Georgia alumnus. Thomas was the perfect person to give me the ultimate tailgating experience. Having no previous knowledge on the topic of tailgating, it was surprising to me that tailgating is a detailed process that started days before the...

...has the second-longest streak of consecutive losing seasons in American professional sports, sixteen straight from 1933 to 1948.The franchise has won two World Series championships (against Kansas City in 1980, Tampa Bay in 2008), and seven National League pennants. Phillies had own five different home stadiums. The most recent one have a fan-friendly design and is part of their complex marketing strategy to increase revenue and happy customers. In 2013 Forbes ranked the Phillies #41team in the World’s most valuable Sports Team. The franchise is estimated to be worth $893 million. But, how does a sport team keep increasing its revenue during bad seasons? The Phillies not only represent a changeable and unpredictable “product/brand” but also compete in a market with many other substitutes that may take away fun attention, support and possible sponsorships. In this case study, we would analyze the team’s market, and its complex segmented target. Marketing concepts would be applied to establish possible solutions to a team which major problem is the fact that they are marketing a team/brand that its owners “Unfortunately can’t promise fans in the stands a win every game.” The Phillies as any other sport team have a major challenge, their own product/brand offered. Marketing and advertising a sport...

...Neither of my parents ever went to college, but that did not stop them from wanting the best for my siblings and I. Growing up they have always taught the importance of education. That is probably the main reason I both love and excel in school. In school I have taken every honors class available and done well in each one. I have only received mostly A’s while not ever having a grade lower than a B. I will graduate this May in the top ten percent of my class with a GPA above 4.0. I am currently taking three AP classes and one other college level course. I have many interests that span a large variety of topics. I am a diehard sports fan, dedicated to my Kansas Jayhawks basketball and Dallas Cowboys football. I try to watch almost every game...

...superstar being called the next Jordan and Shaq was making his defenders look like Sunday brunch. Those were the days when I was a diehard fan, watching countless games, idolizing the skilled athletes, and wishing to be in their shoes someday. In recent years, however, I’ve lost all interest in the NBA and the disgrace of a league that it’s become. So, how did this all happen? How did I go from being the biggest basketball fan I know to a despiser of the league and everything it represents? Let’s go back to the days when I was first followed basketball. I was in elementary school and some of my friends were Lakers fans. I watched a few games with them and really got into the action. I loved everything about the Lakers, from their players, to their history, to the color of their jerseys. I followed the team religiously as they won multiple championships. I couldn’t believe the team that played just an hour from where I lived was experiencing such tremendous success. They’d just won their third straight title and I couldn’t have been happier. The year they signed Payton and Malone was when my love for the game reached its peak. Watching five future hall of famers on the same team was incredible. Of course, the Lakers lost to the Pistons in the finals that year, and everything went to hell. Karl Malone and Phil Jackson retired, and the Lakers traded fan favorites Shaq, Payton, and Rick Fox. A year later, Kobe publically demanded a trade and the team was quickly collapsing. I knew...

...Revenue in the Music Industry There is one major change in technology that has been in discussion for years, and that is the comparison between the revenues of digital music that can be obtained through the internet to that of CD’s. There is also discussion of what the future may hold for the music industry. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has recently stated that there has been an 8 percent increase in global revenue for digital music in 2011 which is a $5.2 billion dollar increase from last year. Because of this increase that means there has to be a decrease somewhere, the decrease is found in the decline in sales of physical formats (CD’s), this market has dropped to 3 percent which is about $16.2 billion dollars. There is belief that in the future all physical formats of music will be a thing of the past and everything will be found digitally. The reason for this belief is that downloads of single digital tracks (which Apple iTunes capitalized on) rose to 11 percent in volume and digital albums rose to 24 percent. There is also discussion of what subscription music services such as Rhapsody, Spotify and Deezer have done to the music industry and its revenue. With these subscription music services there has been a 64 percent increase of subscribers since 2010 and a $13.4 million dollar increase. Recently the US has proposed two laws that could put an end to peer to peer sharing, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect Intellectual...

...Drivers, start your engines! NASCAR is defined by speed, adrenaline, and heart pumping action as cars zoom around the track at speeds up to 220 miles per hour. It is apparent why over six million people tune in to these races across the country. Although most of the glory goes to the winning driver, the entire crew is what makes these victories possible. As an intern for a company that works for NASCAR I have seen many different leadership skills and techniques that are applied throughout the industry. As a company and industry it has been able to grow and develop using these skills. Transformational leadership is the motivation, morale, and performance of followers through a variety of techniques. The best way to achieve transformational leadership in NASCAR is teamwork. Teamwork is essential in a business with so many varying elements; a driver needs a pit crew, vehicle engineers, a crew chief, and many other behind-the-scenes team members. But it takes much more than just the crew members for a racing team to be successful. The key to high performance in this industry is finding a racing team that has positive norms, cohesion, and innovation. One way to develop a high performance team is to look at the business as an open system. This means that the entire industry of NASCAR can only sustain itself by interacting with its environments and each team should view itself this way as well. NASCAR crews must be aware that their environment is constantly affecting the...

...Trent Tucker October 20, 2015 Bank of America stadium is one of the most memorable NFL stadiums that I’ve ever been lucky enough to visit. The stadium is located in Charlotte, North Carolina and is the home of the Carolina Panthers. The surprise trip that I went on with my dad to see a game is one of my favorite childhood memories. It was December 18th and my sixteenth birthday was right around the corner. I came home from the boys’ basketball game, and my parents were sitting at the table with dinner ready. I noticed it was kind of weird for my dad to be home already, so I assumed that I was most likely in trouble. We ate one of the best steaks I’ve ever had and then after my dad asked me to lift my placemat. Still suspicious I thought, “oh great my report card came early”; Instead, I was given an envelope that had a birthday card in it. I opened the card and there were six small pictures that included, a plane, airport, Cam Newton, hotel, restaurant, and the panther’s stadium. At first I figured it was my parents trying to joke around with me, so I tried not to react. Then my dad asked me if I knew what it meant and I said, “What that I’m going to a Panther’s game?” When he said I was, I went silent because that was one of the gifts that I had asked for every year and never expected to get. After a long moment of silence, I hugged my parents and they told me that we were going with Seth and his dad on Friday. That was the start of a memory that I will have my whole...
