A Good Man is Hard to Find, ” Flannery O’Connor In the story “A good man is hard to find, ” the author Flannery O’Connor, begins with a Southern family wanting to take a vacation. O’conner uses irony in her writing twist the story with all the characters. The story it’s very funny all the beginning, on how the Bailey and his family are treating the grandmother. You find out that grandmother doesn't care about anyone then herself. At the end the grandma Christian grace calls out to the Misfits her own to spare her life. This story is full of irony, especially situational irony. The design of the story takes a completely different turn, from what the readers expect. The irony of the title is shown in the way that the grandmother uses the phrase "a good man" in the story. The beginning of the story starts off as a family vacation to florida and the grandmother didn't want to go, she was trying to do what ever it looked to change Bailey’s mind. First it started with a new article “Here this fellow that calls himself The Misfit is aloose from the Federal Pen and headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people. Just you read it. I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn’t answer to my conscience if I did.”
(Mays 405) This doesn't stop the family from deciding to go on this trip. The next morning the grandmother was the first one in the car, she secretly brought her cat. During the trip the grandmother seem very self-centered and shallow.

The family decided to stop for some lunch at a BBQ stand. Thats when Red Sam and grandma started to talk about not being able to trust anyone. For example, when the grandmother and Red Sam were talking about someone taking advantage of him. Red Sam said a couple men came in to ask for gas. Sam said ”They worked at the mill and you know I let them fellers charge the gas they bought? Now why did I do that?” “Because you’re a good man!” the grandmother said at once. “Yes’m, I suppose so,” Red Sam said as if he were struck with this answer.(Mays 409)

Once lunch was over they all got back in the car to start back on the road. During the beginning she gets the kids really excited about this old plantation with secret tunnels. So Bailey decides to take everyone to go see this place. He turns on this random dirt road, that the grandma assures is the right road. After time on this road the grandmother realizes its not here its in Tennessee. She makes a lot of noise about being in the wrong area, which scares the cat to jump on Bailey to cause an accident. There is help shows up, and who is it “The Misfits.” The grandmother tries to convince them they“ shouldn’t call yourself The Misfit because I know you’re a good man at heart. I can just look at you and tell.” (Mays 413) And thats when they take the family to the woods to kill them. The grandmother tried to convince the men he’s a good man, and to pray to Jesus. She then thought he was vulnerable, and says, “Why you’re one of my babies. You’re one of my own children!” She reached out and touched him on the shoulder. The Misfit sprang back as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest.(Mays 417) The story end by him saying “She would of been a good woman,” The Misfit said, “if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life.” (Mays 418)

What does being being "good" get portrayed by in this story. It seems to being used as being a sucker along with being regretful. Both of these conditions seems to have effect on that the grandmother herself can strongly relate to. She uses it twice: first in her description of Red Sam. In the story the grandmother defines a "good man" rather interesting. Secondly, she calls the Misfit a "good man" because she wants to say that “you shouldn’t call yourself The Misfit because I know you’re a good man at heart. I can just look at you and tell.” (Mays 413)

This theory prove to be both mistaken. What is unexpected about this title is that "good" is not being used as it true meaning of "proper" or "pleasant," usually what readers would normally define the word. The meaning of "good," is the grandmother own moral code, which in this story is different then others. When she reached out and touched him was dramatic irony because when she looked into the misfits eyes, she finally realize the truth about her. When she said that he was her baby, she saw the truth that she was not a good person; then thats when, she saw herself in his evil.

Essay on a Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor

...Good or Bad Hypocrisy is to claim to have certain moral behaviors, but the person speaking of the behaviors does not enforce them on himself. In today’s society, many arrogant individuals feel that making themselves seem better than the rest of the crowd causes people to look up to them. In reality, the crowd actually believes that they are foolish. In the story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, the author addresses the consequences of poor judgment and how this leads to the death of the main character. The grandmother attempts to talk her son and his wife into going to Tennessee instead of Florida because a man called the misfit has escaped prison. After they stop at the tower and speak with the owner, Red Sam, the grandmother remembers an old plantation that she would like to see again, and she even exaggerates about the house so her son will stop by. After having an accident on the dirt road leading to the plantation, the grandmother realizes the house is actually in Tennessee. The spoiled old lady waves down a car for help, and the people in the vehicle turn out to be the misfit and his henchmen. She makes a mistake by announcing that she knows who they are. As a result, the misfit and his crew kill her and the rest of the family, leaving her last to die. Through the author’s use of tone, symbolism, and characterization, O’Connor proves that labeling someone as “good” is only true if he has morals and grace, not selfishness and blindness. The grandmother...

“a Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O'Connor Analysis

...“A good man is hard to find” by Flannery O'Connor Analysis Flanery o’connor has such a quirky biting sense of humor and that resonates in this story, but even more so though it might not be so apparent this story has a deeper meaning. O’connor presents us with a moral conundrum, is anyone right by the end of this story? If not then where are we left to think as readers? We know from reading about O’connor that she likes presenting human nature in a darker light and showing that people from all walks of life can be flawed this is also present in her story Revelation through her main character. The overall theme of this story is that we have no right to judge people because in the end we are all flawed in our own ways. The story starts off with the grandmother chewing off her son’s ear about taking his family to Florida because there is a murderer supposedly headed in that direction. She says “I wouldn’t take my children in any direction with a criminal like that loose in it. I couldn’t answer to my conscience if I did” (O’connor 367). We as readers know that this is both an example of foreshowing and by the end of our read we know is a large dose of dramatic irony because she in fact take them rite to the murder. It’s also a tad ironic and comical that she suggests that they go to east Tennessee instead or Florida saying it will make the children more abroad. It’s also ironic that the grandmother is the first one in the car ready to leave even though she doesn’t want to...

Born in Savannah Georgia in 1925, O’Connor was a devout Catholic. Her writings incorporated religious themes and her southern life (Bio). When reading O’Connor’s short stories, it is very surprising and shocking that the stories are often dark and controversial. Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” “Good Country People,” and “Everything That Rises Must Converge” use macabre, grotesque violence, irony, and grace through the depiction of her characters to illustrate that when an individual is faced with “grave” circumstances; those are the moments when grace is realized. Flannery O’Connor incorporates the use of macabre and violence in her short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” masterfully to elicit an unforgettable moment of grace from a character when faced with her “grave” circumstance. The use of grotesque violence is vividly displayed as a southern family is horrendously murdered by an escaped convict, The Misfit and his accomplices. An “eerie” sense of foreshadowing is realized when the protagonist, the grandmother...

An important voice in American literature, she wrote two novels and 32 short stories, as well as a number of reviews and commentaries. In many of her stories there are similarities. In Flannery O’Connor’s short stories her villains represent an antichrist figure through similar traits of manipulation and deception. What is an antichrist? a person or thing regarded as supremely evil or as a fundamental enemy or opponent (Merriam- Webster).  Antichrist figures appear in Flannery O’Connor’s stories: “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, “The Lame Shall Enter First”, “The Life You Save May Be Your Own”, and “Good Country People”. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” begins with a family trip to Florida. The family gets in a car crash on a lonely dirt road after the grandmother causes the family to take a wrong turn. When a passing car stops to help three men get out, the grandmother recognizes one of the men as “The Misfit”. The Misfit then kills the whole family (O’connor) The misfit is the main villain in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”.  He is an antichrist figure because of his manipulative attitude and deception to the family. “Jesus thrown everything off balance. Comparing A Good Man Is Hard To Find And Good Country People

...Who was Flannery O’Connor? Flannery O’Connor was a female, American writer and an important voice in American literature, who wrote two novels and multiple short stories throughout her lifetime. In “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Good Country People,” Flannery O’Connor showcases a genre of themes throughout her pieces and a style that is interesting and different compared to others. Like most of her short stories, both of these writings are very interesting and narrated in a third person point of view. It is clearly obvious that O’Connor’s influence upon these two short stories illustrates her own version of southern gothic with a twist of religion, much like many of her works. There were many factors to her style of writing but two that she uses were “...distortion and exaggeration…” (Shloss 35). The focus of...

A Good Man Is Hard to Find

...“A Good Man is Hard to Find” How old does one need to be to die and how old is too old to profess one’s faith and receive salvation? What does it take to have salvation and eternal life and how does one show that in a work of literature? In the process of all of the chronological references and religious symbolism, Flannery O’Connor in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” addresses this and draws a parallel to the modern moral dilemma of what it takes to be saved. Written in 1953 and based upon her Roman Catholicism roots, O’Connor conveys how each family member gracefully accepts the previous generation’s quirkiness and cynicism to maintain family unit. Although the younger generations do not respect older ones as much as their parents, her stories have characters that convey her message of religious distrust through each character’s deceptive actions and secular thoughts. Similarly, most of O’Connor’s stories make reference to the good and bad by such subtleness as creatively naming the kids after an outlaw and a founder of a major religion. By such obscurity, she wants to draw a parallel between the true believer and the hypocrites that appear to be religious in actions (May). Like a mirror’s reflection, O’Connor’s story contains several undertones of grace in how the characters are developed in the story. From the grandmother to the Misfit, there is a “forewarning of mortal death in the story as the family travels on their last trip before meeting the Misfit that carries...

Death Is Inevitable

...by choice, death is inevitable. Authors Shirley Jackson of “The Lottery,” and Flannery O’Connor of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” strike chords in the reader’s humanity. These short stories portray grotesque, sadistic violence, committed with no “apparent reason or preparation.”(Page 146). As readers begin their journey through these two short stories, they realize the frustration will take a toll on them soon. In the beginning of “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson gives the readers a detailed picture of a beautiful, warm, sunny summer day. The readers interpret this as the short story contains happy and inspiring events. Soon this will be seen as a misleading factor by Shirley Jackson. As the readers continue to read “The Lottery,” they come to find that the short story develops questions for the reader midway through, catching most readers off guard. Having to review what they just read to make sure the short story makes sense. In some parts of this short story, the way Shirley Jackson portrayed certain things, makes it difficult for readers to understand if they do not have an open mind to begin reading the story with. In “The Lottery,” the conclusion bewilders the readers, in the sense that lotteries correspond with winning. In retrospect the conclusion does not quite come as a surprise, due to the foreshadowing throughout the short story. Whereas, it seems in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” readers find the change refreshing from the unfortunate ending in “The Lottery.” The turning...

Flannery O Connor Use Flashbacks In A Good Man Is Hard To Find

...I agree that Flannery O'Connor uses both foreshadowing and flashbacks to create suspense and tension in the story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find." For example the author uses flashbacks when in the story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" is on there way to the Tennessee and the grandmother says "In my time," said the grandmother, folding her thin veined fingers, "children were more respectful of their native states and their parents and everything else. People did right then. Oh look at the cute little pickaninny!" she said and pointed to a Negro child standing in the door of a shack. "Wouldn't that make a picture, now?" she asked and they all turned and looked at the little Negro out of the back window. He waved. She was talking about when about the past because she used the word when “In my time," which means it was in the past....

...A Good Man Is Hard To Find - Foreshadowing In "A Good Man is Hard to Find," by Flannery O'Connor, one is struck by the unexpected violence at the end of the story. However, if one re-reads the story as second time, one will see definite signs of foreshadowing of the ending. In the course of this story, O'Connor uses strong imagery to foreshadow the people and the events in this story. There are three significant times she uses this technique. They are the description of the grandmother's dress, the death of the family, and the conversation between the Misfit and the grandmother. The grandmother did not want to go to Florida; she ironically dresses in her Sunday best. She was dressed very nicely with, "A navy blue dress with a small white dot in the print. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet." (11). A strong foreshadowing imagery can be seen in these lines. Knowing the ending of the story, the grandmother's elaborate dress Is this essay helpful? ...strong characters within the story. In the story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” written by Flannery O’Connor, the grandmother is the central character. Posed as a “know it all,” she thinks of herself as a proper lady, honest, wise, and bases her life on the past. O’Connor portrays the grandmother as a very manipulative, highbrow, selfish, ungodly old woman, unlike your typical grandmother. These are clearly uncommon characteristics of what one would consider to be a maternal grandmother. It is these characteristics which make the grandmother such a strong and memorable character in O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” As early as the second line of the story, O’Connor introduces the reader to the grandmother’s manipulation. “She wanted to visit some of her connections in east Tennessee and she was seizing at every chance to change Bailey’s mind” (O’Connor 294). From the onset, O’Connor begins to set the stage and reveal the grandmother’s manipulation skills. “Now look here, Bailey,”… “see here, read this,” and she stood with one hand on her then hip and the other rattling the newspaper at his bald head.
