..."How to Be Great at Public Speaking and Get Paid for It" "I couldn't believe it when I got my first check." I'm writing this after getting back from a long bike ride. I have a really cool high-tech bike that I just love. Plus it gives me some exercise after I've been sitting too long in front of this computer. Do you know what really makes me mad? It's when I see someone who read a couple of books on presentation skills and then they call themselves a professional speaking coach. Yes, it's true that some of the best coaches, especially in sports, were not always the best players, but when it comes to learning speaking skills there is just no way you can train someone else unless you've been on stage quite a few times yourself. In fact, incompetent training has made fools of some big name speakers who bombed after taking the advice of some of the "book learned coaches." Most people that try to get into the speaking business lose money and disappear quickly. If you are one of the ones that do make money, congratulations, but there are many new ways to turn your knowledge into really big profits. $100,000.00 It's relatively easy to pull in $100,000.00 plus a year in the speaking business working from home (if you know exactly what to do and how to do it.) I'd like to help. You'll discover the most advanced and modern speaking tips, genius techniques (the audience will think you are one) and strategies used by top speakers around the world. I want you to find out how you...

...Colin Powell is a great speaker. I really enjoy watching this video. He gave such an encouragement to continue on in being great leaders. One of the ideas that I enjoy the most is when he stated, “Have a purpose.” He continued on explaining that an organization needs to have “a sense of purpose what are we here for.” This statement is extremely important in organizations today because companies can start focusing on making money instead on helping improving the community, “the society.” If companies start with the purpose of selling a video that helps others learn how to read, then they should only continue on selling and improving the video, not selling the video in a higher price with advertisement with lessons not pertaining to how to read....

...woman and her job. The speaker does however, express that she moves past the judgment that she first feels towards the woman in the stall. She imagines parts of nature and wishes to put the woman in a beautiful place in life. In this poem, the poet uses imagery, connotation, metaphor and symbolism to describe what she is really seeing compared to what she is imagining and would like to see. Significantly, the speaker begins the poem by saying, “A darkness was ripped from my eyes” (line 2). The darkness that she is speaking of is the judgment that she places upon this woman in the stall. She first has a closed mind, a disturbed perception if you will, towards the cleaning lady. To say that it “was ripped from my eyes” (line 2) implies that she did attain a better perception of her. The speaker knew that she should not be so judgmental towards this woman and the job she is performing. It is obvious that she understands she should not feel this way when in the second stanza she states, “Disgust argued in my stomach” (line 6). For that feeling to argue, it exhibits her capability to understand. Bewilderment and dismay overcame the speaker. She feels disgusted by what most people consider such a degrading job, yet so displeased with herself for exhibiting such typical judgment. She displays very conflicting feelings. In the fourth stanza she says, “She smiled and I smiled. What kind of nonsense is this” (line 17). Such a selfless exchange of a smile has a great ability to shed light...

...Richard Eberhart’s poem, “The Groundhog,” illustrates a common experience in which the speaker encounters a decaying animal to depict a profound, yet simple truth: all beings must succumb to mortality and mutability. While “The Groundhog” does not appear in stanzas Eberhart uses stages of emotional progression to depict the speaker’s initial reaction consisting of shock and rage to his final realization and understanding of death. Throughout the first 25 lines, the speaker and his emaciated heart appear to be in a state of shock, unable to understand or comprehend how this miniscule experience could have such truth behind it. The speaker’s emotions are running high after he begins to examine the dead animal; there is a certain longing to...

...because love offers so many elements of writing. It can be as grand as the ocean with great depths, leaving the poet free to roam about and explore. It can also have great passion and sensual power like the waves that caress and crush the shore line. Love can also be as vast and frightening as Pandora’s Box, with great unknowns and even evils such as heartbreak and the loss of a lover. It is through these different descriptions of love that great poets can share and reflect on having great love or remembering love that once was, but was lost or taken. Mark Doty’s “The Embrace” and Sharon Olds’ “Last Night” are two unusual love poems that bring several different accounts of love to light. In these unconventional love poems one can experience these differences, such as the heat of passion of a new found love that is not so innocent, and the fear and torture of grim reality as a deep love is lost. The premise of these unconventional love stories is seen in two extremely different ways throughout these poems. When one thinks of a traditional love poem, thoughts of happy times and romantic words come to mind. Not so in Doty’s “The Embrace”. Doty sets the tone of this poem by describing the shock of reality expressed by the homosexual speaker who experiences the agony of being unable to remember the details of the face of his deceased lover. In the dream described in this poem, the speaker asks “Why so difficult, remembering the actual look / of you?” (Line 15-16), suggesting...

...Part A In future, I want to be a chartered accountant in a well- known company or accounting firm. There are a few graduate attributes which will help me in succeeding in my career. The first graduate attribute is effective communication skill. Good communication skills help us to present our points and messages in the most convincing way. Firstly, we have to speak proficiently together with gestures, good posture, movement, and good control of our voice because it would help us to convince people easily. Speaking without moving our body or in a monotonous voice will result in a boring presentation and thus, people will find it hard to focus on what we are saying. Effective communication skills also gives clarity which will prevent misunderstandings that lead to arguments. With this skill, our messages will be simple, direct and easy to be uunderstood. Next, accountants have to present to the company’s owners and shareholders every now and then, regarding the company’s financial performance. With effective communication skills, they will feel confident with my work. If I cannot communicate effectively, I will find it difficult to present about the company’s performance and I will also be unable to answer their questions regarding the company’s financial matters. Besides, information technology skills are indeed important in this modern world. We have to learn how to make full use of information technology such as power point slides, e-mails, internet, mobile applications...

...A certainty of life: Death Two of Emily Dickenson’s poems, [Because I could not stop for Death] (1254) and [After great pain, a formal feeling comes] (932) are both about one of life’s few certainties: death. In Dickenson's poems, death is often personified, and illustrates a very different view on death than the traditional horror movie. Through the use of characters, imagery, and setting, Dickenson creates amazingly powerful poems that offer a creative and yet extremely different perspective on death. The characters in each of these two poems allow us two extremely different perspectives on death. One perspective is how it feels to be dead and look at life the other being how to deal with death when you are the one who is left behind. Also the different perspectives regarding the fear people have of dying and the emotions that surround it. In [Because I could not stop for Death], death appears as kind and compassionate. The woman fears death until she finally meets it and is welcomed by it “He kindly stopped for me” (2). The word kindly gives a vision of a kind and gentle man, a friend and a companion. In [After great pain, a formal feeling comes] the feeling is quit different in that it depicts the suffering of the people left behind. It shows death as cold and harsh and something that causes pain and suffering. Even though the emotions in both poems are completely different both show time passage as a very important part of death, in that death tends...

...activities are one of these situations. Civic engagement or civic participation is the encouragement of the general public to become involved in the political process and the issues that affect them. It is the community coming together to be a collective source of change, political and non-political. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civic_engagement) Public speaking and Civic engagement goes hand in hand. Without speaking in public, like the definition above, you will never be able to speak your mind out to the general public for the sake of your purpose. Civic engagement doesn’t happen with just watching. For it is not called participating. This research entitled “Public Speaking and Civic Engagement” will convey how public speaking plays a great role in civic engagement and vice versa. I.a- Rationale of the Study Project 540 at the University of Pennsylvania defines civic engagement in this way: “Adding one’s voice to community conversations. Advocacy on behalf of others....

...to improve your listening, the following techniques would be of great assistance: Listening with an open mind While hearing, consider all sides of an issue to avoid defensiveness. Moreover, be ready to put into consideration both new ideas as well as viewpoints. Remember that every opinion that you encounter as you listen should be a hypothesis, which you can both examine and experiment if it works. Come up with a receptive listening environment It is important to put away any things that will distract your attention. There is a need that you should have a private and comfortable place where you cannot be distracted (Alessandra, 2014). Identify with the speaker while asking questions This involves putting yourself in the place of the speaker. You need to understand the speaker from his or her own perspective. Moreover, you will fuel the desire to listen to the speaker and encourage him to expand on the topic if you ask questions. Concentrate and show the speaker that you want to listen Pay attention to the message being delivered by the speaker. There is also a need that you should look and act in accordance to the comments of the speaker (“Learning Tips,” 2012). Apart from just listening, place a demand on yourself that you must understand what the speakers are saying. Control your emotions and temper There is a great possibility that you can misunderstand what the speaker is saying if you cannot control your emotions as well as your temper...

...fits within each one. For some time I have been searching for a new helmet that has many features for a great price. Motorcycle Superstore (MS) offer all lines of helmets at reasonable prices with videos and reviews that describe many of them. The speaker in this video was Mr. Harry McPherson, a sales representative for Nolan Helmets. Overall he did a great job in convincing me that he had knowledge of the product by presenting it with a strait foreword and informative presentation with little stutter or mistakes. He was wearing a professional looking shirt that gave off a knowledgeable sense of the product from the start. The vocabulary used in describing the product was top notch and very commanding. The situation in this case was describing the features, manufacturer and nature of a helmet that was in a room setting that gave focus on the product with no other items to take the attention away from it. The situation in this presentation included some close-ups that caught my attention. With myself being the audience, or any prospective buyer, had no trouble interpreting the message being conveyed by the speaker. Each element fit together very well and the video was successful in convincing me of a great product (McPherson, H. 2012). In contrast to the previous video the second selected was an instructional on landing an airplane. The Instructor Josh Kallenberg, the speaker in the triangle, displayed a sense of knowledge in flying aircraft by giving his background at the beginning...

...Influence of MLK Dr. Martin Luther King Jr is a great role model for public speaking. He is known as one of America's most influential speakers even 52 years after giving the iconic "I have a dream" speech. During his speeches he captivated his audiences with confident clear communication. MLK used encouraging, positive, and compassionate language to advocate an equal society. He kept his speeches narrow addressing the issue at hand. His speeches were clear. Varying his pace, tone, and volume allowed him to keep the attention of his audience. ...between race in America. Through vivid imagery, Langston Hughes comments on the nuances of being African American in America in the era of the Civil Rights Movement. In “Theme for English B”, Hughes discusses both the differences and similarities between white and black americans. Hughes paints the reader a great physical and figurative picture of the disparities between the two races by describing the speaker’s college experience. The speaker starts off the poem by highlighting the differences between the white professor, his white classmates, and himself. He says that the speaker is the “only colored student in [his college] class” in a college “on the hill above Harlem”. Harlem is a predominately African American community in New York. It is symbolic that this predominately white college is situated on a hill above the predominately black community of Harlem. Even though the Civil Rights Movement had begun, African Americans still had a long way to go to be able to get up to the “college on the hill” where the white...

...to defeat death and live generations into the future. Age is inevitable, and immortality is unachievable. It is for this reason that everyone rejects their old age and are eager to embrace the ideas of life past death. Many people chase power in pursuit of immortality, but many people do not realize time eventually erases everything. Percy Shelley’s “Ozymandias” highlights the power of time as a traveler visits the ruins of Ozymandias, a great king of the past who is now forgotten. All that is left of his legacy is a broken statue that reads, “‘Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’” (11), in which the speaker then comments, “nothing beside remains” (12). This...
