A guide to project management

In 1994, upon the initiative of Austria and the Netherlands, with special support from France, eight states founded the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) as an Enlarged Partial Agreement of the Council of Europe. It was to become “a forum to discuss and seek solutions to the specific tasks and challenges that face them in the coming years and which will play a decisive role in the process of European integration”. At the time of writing, thirty-two 1 states subscribe to the Partial Agreement. Following a successful initial trial period (1995-1998), the continuation of the activities of the Centre was confirmed by Resolution (98) 11 of the Committee of Ministers. The aim of the Graz Centre is to offer – generally through international workshops, colloquies and research and development networks and other expert meetings – a platform and a meeting place for officials responsible for language policy, specialists in didactics and methodologies, teacher trainers, textbook authors and other multipliers in the area of modern languages. A guide to project management is the fourth in a series of publications edited within the framework of the first medium-term programme of the ECML (20002003). The ECML’s overall role is the implementation of language policies and the promotion of innovations in the field of teaching and learning modern languages. The publications are the results of research and development project teams established during workshops in Graz. The series highlights the dedication and active involvement of all those who participated in the projects and in particular of the group leaders and co-ordinators.

Project Management

...accuracy and completeness of the project plan. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? Progressive elaboration permits the evolution and solution of a project to emerge. I must declare I completely agree with said statement. The idea of progressive elaboration refers to a project management technique within which the project set up is regularly changed, elaborated and improved as newer info becomes offered. Progressive Elaboration unendingly details a thought and specific info and a lot of correct estimates become offered because the project progresses, manufacturing a lot of correct and complete plans that result from the sequential iterations of the design method. Progressive elaboration is delineate by the Project Management Institute (PMI), in their guide to the Project Management Body of data (PMBOK® Guide), as a best observe. Progressive elaboration is analogous to alternative best practice components. It’s explained within the PMBOK® Guide and its use is usually recommended in many instances. The precise way to use it in a project management method would depend upon the methodology used. A number of the agile project management methodologies counsel on sharply unvarying or multi-step processes that will need active progressive elaboration, whereas methodologies just like the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) suggests one cycle with terribly restricted iteration, requiring direct definition and fewer elaboration on project detail. Due to the potential...

Analyzing Risk

...Risk This document will cover the definition and description of risk management. Topics covered include the philosophy, methodology, and the purpose of analyzing risk as well as development of a risk management plan and a procurement management plan. Identifying risk is the process of determining which risks may affect the progress of the project. The project stakeholders are usually included in the risk identification process. These stakeholders include the project manager, risk management experts, the project team members, and end users. Identifying risk is an iterative process because new risks can develop in a short period and should be integrated into the risk management plan. The process of risk planning involves following a series of steps that can be continually repeated in sequence throughout the life of a project. The first step in the process is risk planning. Risk Planning Risk planning begins with getting solid backing from the project stakeholders for the risk management approach (Marchewka, 2009). Support from the stakeholders will ensure that the resources required for a successful risk assessment are available to the project team. The second part of risk planning is to be prepared for the risks that are identified. The team must plan for the potential resources and tools required to perform proper project risk management. After the stakeholders have committed to the risk management approach, it is time to start the next step in the process; risk identification...

...Unlimited 1. To what extent does project management apply to Adventures Unlimited? Each one of their tours is an individual project, since each has a beginning, middle, and end, which have classic project phases, including a definition or selection phase, a planning phase, and an execution phase. Project management involves budgeting of resources, and their resources include their administrative staff and tour guides. In addition, project management includes project selection: the Rodriguezes need to be able to accurately anticipate the costs of each tour that they consider undertaking, so that they may make wise decisions about which tours to operate. Project management includes financial analysis, for instance calculating the net present value of each tour that they are considering offering. In addition, since their tours involve many details, the project planning methods taught in project management would be helpful for them as well. Using gantt charts to plan out the details of each tour would help them to avoid problems that they have had in the past, for instance, having missed a train connection in Blanco Puente. Project planning with Gantt charts would also help them to clearly delineate the details involved for each tour, and to be able to not only plan the logistics of each detail, but anticipate the cost of it as well. 2. What kind of training in project management should the Rodriguezes, the administrative staff, and tour guides receive to improve the operation...

...Support Paper 129-2007 Project Organization Proposal (POP) and Project Leadership Plan Guide Rex Pruitt, PREMIER Bankcard, Inc., Sioux Falls, SD 57104 ABSTRACT In my 20+ years of experience using SAS and organizing projects, the success or failure of any project, no matter how small or large, generally resulted from how well a project was planned, organized and executed. This paper presents an easy to use Project Organization Proposal (POP) that can be implemented without adding additional resources to the MIS or IT divisions. It simply suggests the effective use of existing resources. However, as would be expected, the POP will only succeed if it receives support from 1) business MIS Management, 2) IT Management, 3) and their respective staff. The collaboration of all resources associated with a project is critical to its success. Clearly defining roles and accountabilities must be established prior to project initiation. Also included in this paper is a Project Leadership Plan guide. This guide will serve as a critical planning document, or checklist, that can be used to ensure that any project meets with success. If this guide cannot be completed, the project should not be initiated. 1 SAS Global Forum 2007 Planning, Development and Support INTRODUCTION In my 20+ years of experience using SAS and organizing projects, the success or failure of any project, no matter how small or large, generally resulted from how well a project was planned, organized...

Job Satisfaction

...OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA) (Revised) 1. The Program: The importance of „management‟ as a professional study can today be compared with that of obtaining a normal graduate degree in order to be called educated. It is just short of becoming a compulsion. Businesses and institutions are growing in complexity and size. They are cutting across space and time by embracing technology, globalization and information. Mere operational efficiency is no more sufficient. Managerial capabilities have become necessary for firms to act on a global platform. Although there are a large number of institutions offering MBA programs, many of them just churn out non employable MBAs. A good institute must incorporate what the industry requires with changing times. The SMU way to Management degree or diploma is to mould the learning towards this objective. With this perspective it has introduced several programs which are geared to meet the industry requirement. These areas are Banking, Information System, Retail Operations and Healthcare. It is planning to offer more programs in the field of environment, disaster management, and media. The master of business administration (MBA) is an integrated program designed to provide an advanced program in management for those seeking managerial positions in industry, commerce and services. The core subjects are aimed at developing knowledge and skills in fundamental management disciplines. The program also involves participation in group work with students...

...HISTORICAL PROJECT 2570 bc The Great pyramid of giza completed The Pharaohs built the pyramids and today archaeologists still argue about how they achieved this feat. Ancient records show there were managers for each of the four faces of the Great Pyramid, responsible for overseeing their completion. Since the Qin Dynasty (221BC-206BC), construction of the Great Wall had been a large project. According to historical data, the labor force was organized into three groups: soldiers, common people and criminals. The Emperor Qin Shihuang ordered millions of people to finish this project. 1917 The Gantt chart Developed by Henry Gantt (1861-1919) One of the forefathers of project management, Henry Gantt is best-known for creating his self-named scheduling diagram, the Gantt chart. It was a radical idea and an innovation of worldwide importance in the 1920s. One of its first uses was on the Hoover Dam project started in 1931.
