In “A Hanging”, the author’s preoccupation towards the importance of a life is effectively and movingly described in paragraph ten. Similarly to the author, most people, some of who may deeply concern about this matter, could never realize how horrible it is to “destroy a healthy, conscious man”. The word “destroy” is concrete and precise: it does not merely mean killing, it is ruthlessly ruining and ending something which is at “full tide”, vividly expressing itself to the world. That thing is a person’s life – a complex, mysterious and incomprehensible combination, including conscious and unconscious activities. This man’s conscious activities such as reasoning, foreseeing and remembering are accurately working even towards small problems. His senses are clear: “his eyes saw the yellow gravel and the grey walls”. His unconscious activities are operating normally: bowels disgeting food, skin renewing itself, nails growing, tissues forming. He is “alive, just as we are alive”. The importance of a life which is similar to any other life is emphasized in the last sentence of the paragraph: “He and we were a party of men walking together, seeing, hearing, feeling, understanding the same world; and in two minutes, with a sudden snap, one of us would be gone – one mind less, one world less.”. Moreover, throughout the essay, the author did not mention the reason for the man’s hanging, in order to support the idea: People may be different in religions, beliefs and perspective, but all of them are human, living, sensing and struggling to survive in the same world. Each of them possesses a life which is, as shown above, extremely precious. In spite of this fact, why do they have to kill each others? Why is killing happening everyday? The author, unfortunately, does not know the

Hanging Fire Analysis

..."Hanging Fire" is a brief poem written by Audre Lorde that expresses the feelings of teenagers in a simple and direct context. The title "hanging fire" refers to a firearm that has been pulled its trigger, but is delayed in igniting. In this case, it represents the girl being hesitant and insecure about her future, therefore is neglected in going on, as in the bullet that is supposed to fire in “hanging fire”. Right in the beginning, Lorde is straightforward to us in her subject with the sentence, "I am fourteen"(line 1), and we therefore becomes aware of the fact that this poem is about a teenager. Right away it is followed by a personification, "my skin has betrayed me"(line 2).Of course, this cannot be taken literally as it really means who she is in another’s eyes is not who she is deep down. In using the word “betrayed”, Lorde now creates a sense that this teenage girl has no control over her actions and is debilitated by outside powers. This idea can also be seen throughout the context. In the lines “There is nothing I want to do/and too much/that has to be done” (lines 19-21), we may recognize that the unavoidable pressures teenagers receive, whether they are from their peers or parents. The effects from peer pressure can also be seen in the line, “I have to learn how to dance/in time for the next party”. When Lorde uses, "the boy I cannot live without"(line 3), readers perceive this naive fairytale-like dream of the-prince-on-a-white-horse and the child-like longing...

Analysis of "The Hanging" by George Orwell

...Sylver Baker 2016 Professor Hendrix ENC 1102 23 May 2016 Formal Assignment 1: Analysis of “A Hanging” by George Orwell “A Hanging” by George Orwell is a short story based on the author’s experience while working as a police magistrate. In the story he talks about the experience of witnessing an execution. The prisoner is escorted to the gallows by the warders for his hanging. Once there everyone is ready for the execution to be done so that they can all go have a drink. Using descriptive words so that one feels and experiences what he experienced Orwell argues that Capital Punishment is wrong. Orwell focuses on the negative to set the tone of how unpleasant and depressing an execution is. He describes the day “a sodden morning of the rains. A sickly light, like yellow tinfoil” which sets a gloomy tone. He describes the cells, “condemned”, “a row of sheds fronted with double bars, like small animal cages”. In creating such a gloomy setting Orwell proves he is concerned and nervous about the execution. If he was not affected by the hanging, then the mood would not be so melancholy. Orwell can’t simply ignore the capital punishment and nor can anyone else. All people feel some kind of anxiety about the inhumane and cruel punishment. Orwell describes the superintendent and other characters’ emotions before and after the hanging, who is against capital punishment. The prisoner cries out in a rhythmical tone, “Ram! Ram! Ram! Ram!”, not out of fear or for help but as though...
