Nadia couldn’t understand the villagers’ hushed conversations otherwise she would’ve known to run. Her new village, White Nile, spoke in Coptic, or the old Egyptian language which should be considered dead. But in this village it was still very much alive. Her old village, Kassala, was being turned upside down thanks to the slave trade. Nadia missed it very much, but knew she would be much safer in her new village or so she thought. It was a beautiful fall day full of leaves turning colors, temperature changing, and of children running around playing soccer. She was on the way to school and couldn’t help but smile at the whole glorious sight. When the first class of the day started Nadia performed well on the recitation of the passage from …show more content…
That’s 2,954 miles of treacherous rivers, forests, and parts of deserts. No way am I going to be able to make it.” “Well, I guess you’ll just have to die trying, the man replies nastily.” Nadia treks the terrible, makeshift path to Sierra Leone. It was a never-ending walk, from dawn to dusk with hardly any food or water. It appears that she and the slaves that were still alive were going to be forced to board the ship called, Desire. “Good luck in America, the traders cat-called. Hope you survive and serve your masters well, but not that we care what happens to you!” Nadia had never felt so alone. She was chained by both ankles and both hands remaining upright. It was a perilous journey with raging storms at sea and the rowdy fights that often occurred. She was beaten, forlorn, and hoping that life in America would be better conditions than these. But of course that wouldn’t be the case she was a slave and nobody wanted to help slaves far as she knew. They finally docked in a place that was called Natchez, Mississippi. The captain called, “Hurry up you lot of illiterate oafs. There are people waiting here to bid for …show more content…
People were eyeing her with what seemed as a keen interest, others with distaste. A family came up to her and inspected her, but decided she wasn’t good enough for them. She was there for hours. Until one couple came up and asked the man that was selling her how much he wanted for her. Nadia couldn’t be more hopeful, for this couple looked less cruel than the others. The seller replied $935, no lower. “I will give you $955 for her, the man replied to the seller.” “You can take her, but I will warn you she is a feisty one, the seller answered back.” “That’s alright, she’ll soon learn her place on my plantation, the man answered back coolly. Come along now, no reason to keep us waiting, he said to Nadia. Nadia obediently, but with resent evident in her eyes, followed. “I can’t believe the way he’s treating me. He’s treating me like the captain did on the ship. I thought he was a less cruel than the others, but apparently it makes no difference, Nadia despairingly

The Hero’s Journey

...& the Hero’s Journey There is no denying the fact that the hero is popular topic which is much talked about not by movies, but also by the real society. It is generally thought that we always discuss about heroes all time but no one seems to have same opinion on what makes a hero. Many definitions of a hero is someone have superpower, strength, courage and brave. But who could considered example of heroes? Everyone has their opinion to define a hero so I also have my opinion to define a hero. “The Pursuit of Happyness” is a movie which was released in 2006. This movie is an adaptation of a real story. Chris Gardner, who is a singer father. He is homelessness and poor because he failed on his business. He also has to raise his son. For his son’s future ,he never give up and always look for changes to change his life. He believed that as long as it is hard enough, happiness will come tomorrow. In the end, he be a successful stockbroker and changes his life. For many hero’s stories, Chris Gardner is not a typical super hero. He doesn’t have any superpowers and strength. He is homelessness with his son and poor, no one can care about them. However, he is kind of a special hero. He has strong mind and the spirit of never give up when he faced to many challenges. Maybe he could not change the world and help everyone but he changed himself and he gave his son more happiness in his son life. And there are three conspicuous aspects about Chris Gardner in the hero’s journey step are...

...A Hero’s Journey: Hamlet and Simba What images come to mind as you reflect on your childhood? Playgrounds, blackboards, and soccer balls may be among the warmest of memories. Yet for many mermaids swim their thoughts, princesses get swept of their feet, and lions roar to their loyal place in the animal kingdom. There is no doubt that today’s entertainment has most of its touch using classical influences. Walt Disney has produced animated films that have captured the heart and imagination of audiences of all ages around the world through the magic of storytelling and imagery. Many of us appreciate the imagination and magic that Disney puts into its animations with out knowing they are based off of classical and traditional storylines that have been around for many years. For example the Disney movie The Lion King that is based off of the classical Shakespeare play Hamlet. The Lion King is possibly the most well known movie of the Disney collection that portrays a strong moral to its viewers. The journey that is taken by the characters in this movie is one from innocence to experience through confronting challenging situations. Just how Disney uses magic and imagination to capture its audience William Shakespeare also captured the hearts of people everywhere through the representation of emotions and feeling in his plays. Hamlet is without a question one of the most famous play in English literature. Through Hamlet Shakespeare shows a brilliant depiction of the hero’s struggle...

The Hero's Journey

...The Hero’s Journey is followed throughout Doris Lessing’s “Through the Tunnel” with the three elements of the threshold guardian, the trials and enemies, and the ordeal. To begin, the story starts out with Jerry finding and going to the wild bay. Then he meets some local boys who dive into the water and swim through a underwater cave. He tries to follow, “Down he went, until he touched the wall of the rock again. But the salt was so painful in his eyes that he could not see.” (p.3, lines 14-15). The threshold guardian is something that is preventing the hero from entering the special world (which in this case is the wild bay/underwater cave). This quote demonstrates the threshold guardian element because it creates a physical barrier between...

A Hero's Journey

...A Hero’s Journey Joseph Campbell describes the 17 stages that occur during a hero’s journey, also known as Monomyth. The Odyssey by Homer is a story based on Ulysses and his journey, I will be describing the stages of Monomyth based on Campbell’s ideas. These stages will focus on Ulysses and his son Telemachus. According to Joseph Campbell, a hero’s journey normally entails three phases; the departure, the initiation, and the return. (Wikipedia) The first phase is the departure phase, which consists of three stages; the call to adventure, the refusal of the call, and supernatural aid. The call to adventure, is when the hero is in a “mundane situation of normality from which some information is received that acts as a call to head off into the unknown.” (Wikipedia) Ulysses call to adventure began when he accepted to lead his men and go to troy and fight against King Priam. This is considered an adventure because it was something different, it took him away to the unknown, and it tested his courage. This was also Ulysses’ first step into the start of his journey. The second stage is refusal of the call, this happens when the hero does not want to go on the journey. Ulysses was in Ithica with his wife and newborn son, when he got the call to go to Troy. Ulysses did not want to leave his son behind or wife but had no choice, this could be seen as him refusing to go to Troy. The third stage is receiving supernatural aid, one of the examples of this stage is when Miverva appears...

...Counselor as Companion on the Hero’s Journey The story of the hero’s journey has been told and retold in oral and literary traditions for centuries. The hero motif captures the strength and perseverance of the human spirit of men and women so elegantly that it has not been bound by either culture or religious tradition (J. Campbell, 1949). In this article a counselor discusses his experiences while working with a male client named Steve. Steve’s story is very inspiring to everyone. His story shows us that we should believe in ourselves. This story has touched me and I believe people can learn from it. I believe the counselor learned many things from Steve. The first thing I believe that the counselor learned from Steve is that believing in yourself is the strongest belief you can have. If you don’t believe in yourself no one will. Also no one can change you or what you want or believe in. The counselor also learned that some people have a lot of hope; and with that hope people can do anything. Another thing that the counselor learned was that setting small goals is better for a person to do. It may seem hard and take more time, but you can still accomplish your goals and maybe more. The counselor’s behavior may have changed as a result of working with Steve. The counselor may have doubt in Steve also, feeling like he did have limitations as the other doctors were telling him. Another thing that may change as a result of working with Steve may be that the counselor treated...

Hero's Journey

...defined by their past, but instead, what and who they find within themselves in a dire moment of need. There is a hero in everyone. Most people just need the right time and the courage to bring out their inner hero. The writer and philosopher Joseph Campbell wrote about the stages each hero goes through in their journey in a book called, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. In Finding Nemo, there is tragedy before there is hope. There is also comedy, adventure and suspense to keep the viewer on their feet. Marlin, a clown fish father and the hero, embarks on a journey to find his son, Nemo. Marlin’s wife dies protecting Nemo and his siblings when they are still eggs and are being attacked by an eel who is trying to eat them. After the attack, Nemo is the only egg left. Nemo survives, but is injured, which leaves him with a gimp fin. This leaves the excited and adventurous Marlin a very scared and timid clownfish. When Nemo is captured by a scuba diver, Marlin must swim from the Great Barrier Reef to Sydney, Australia to save him. Marlin will find the hero within himself and act fast to save Nemo while also allowing him to learn and grow without sheltering him too much. The hero’s ordinary world consists of Marlin and his son Nemo, confined to the safety and protection of the ocean by their sea anemone. Although this may seem uncommon, in real life, this is a very common relationship between clownfish and anemone. Without the anemone, clownfish usually become prey to bigger predator fish...

The Hero's Journey

...Christian Lescznske Professor Larkin ELIT2055-B 31 March 2014 The Hero’s Journey: Comparing and Contrasting Heroes Joseph Campbell was an American psychologist and mythological researcher. In his lifelong research, Campbell discovered many common patterns running through hero myths and stories from around the world. Years of research lead Campbell to discover several basic stages that almost every hero-quest goes through (no matter what culture the myth is a part of). He calls this common structure “the monomyth” (Hero’s Journey). The “hero’s journey” appears in drama, storytelling, myth, religious ritual, and psychological development. It describes the typical adventure of The Hero, who goes out and achieves great deeds on behalf of the family, group, tribe, or civilization. There are twelve steps, or stages, of the typical “Hero’s Journey”. The twelve steps are: The ordinary world, the call to adventure, refusal of the call, meeting with the mentor, crossing the threshold, a test, the approach, the ordeal, the reward, the road back, the resurrection, and the return with the elixir, or reward. As I previously stated, Campbell’s monomyth works best with the traditional form of the quest such as in folk and fairy tales, myths, legends, and other fantasies. However, it can be applied to many different genres or types of stories. A quest does not have to include swords and monsters. It can just as easily occur in the real world. The monomyth is ageless and universal...

The Hero's Journey

...Greek civilization is credited with giving the world the method for today’s popular movies and books. This formula is in Suzanne Collin’s novel “The Hunger Games,” the story of Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District Twelve in post-apocalyptic earth, who faces many trials and terrors when she is sent to participate in the annual Hunger Games. The formula, also known as The Hero’s Journey, is seen all throughout this story. The method begins with ‘The Call,’ or when something calls the main character to make the journey or quest that he or she is about to go on. In this novel, Katniss, who possesses a great ability to hunt, is called when representatives from the capitol of her world come to her district for the annual reaping, or when two people are chosen from each district to participate as ‘tributes’ in the Hunger Games. Things seem to go as normal, but when Katniss’s younger sister Prim is chosen; she does something that had never been done before and volunteers herself to go in her sister’s place. She is chosen to go alongside the son of District Twelve’s bakers, Peeta Mellark. After the reaping, she and Peeta are sent to the capitol, where they are prepared to face the capitol, and then the Hunger Games. Katniss then goes into the phase of the formula called ‘The Preperation.’ She and Peeta are both given Prep Teams who dress them up to help them get sponsors.
