...Sarah Colbaugh February 5, 2015 Language and Composition Burk “House Divided” On June 16, 1858 in Springfield Illinois, the newly nominated Senator, Abraham Lincoln, addresses 1,000 delegates at the Illinois Republican Convention about a future crisis that could further destroy the Union. This was Lincoln's "acceptance speech" after the Republican Party of Illinois nominated him for the Senate seat then held by Stephen Douglas. The issue at stake: slavery. A country that is supposed to stand together has had this difference of slavery and has turned against each other. Lincoln states that the “opponents of slavery, will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all states”. The South relied on the slaves for economic and lifestyle reasons, while the North didn’t agree with slavery because of moral reasons. Lincoln paraphrased the following passage from the Bible, Matthew 12:25, when he spoke of a house divided: And Jesus knew their [the Pharisees'] thoughts, and said unto them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand." His use of this paraphrased metaphor is perhaps clearer when you look at some more of his speech: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe the government cannot endure permanently...

...Peyton Lawson Mr. Dell ENGL 1010 – C01 03/27/14 Analyzing Ad Gant Ad By analyzing the Gant ad, there are three things that pop out to me immediately, the fact that there is an American flag outlining the ad, the man in the ad looks comfortable in the clothing he’s wearing, and he looks to be on a pier possibly fishing. As I began to analyze the ad I realized that their use of colors is used to complement each other. I believe the American flag outlining the ad symbolizes the fact that Gant is an authentic American company. Since Gant is an authentic American company, it will drive people from America to have the urge to buy their product. American men would be a specific target in this certain ad. They would also be targeting the men that are doing service for America. American men also tend to like comfortable and American made clothing. From analyzing the man wearing the chain stitched sweater in the ad and wearing the curved bill hat, it implies that the weather is possibly a bit chilly and that the sun may be glaring over the ocean. By him wearing a watch, it implies that he values his time and plans to be productive with his time. Fishermen would also be a direct target in this ad. The man in the Gant ad looks to be standing on a pier possibly fishing or watching boats dock in over the sunset. The scene in the ad may imply that the sunset could reflect romantic...

...A house divided speech by Abraham Lincoln In 1858 Abraham Lincoln was nominated as a candidate for the senate for the Republican Party in Illinois. This is a well-known speech. It took place as the end of the republicans state convention in the House of Representatives in Illinois. In the speech he makes it extremely clear who the supporters and opponents of slavery are. The background for the speech is the conflict between the Kansas-Nebraska law and the Supreme Courts decision in the Dred Scott case. The Kansas-Nebraska law allowed the states to decide whether they want to abolish slavery or not. The Supreme Court decided that the right of ownership of slaves should not be prevented in any state. A house divided is a speech by Abraham Lincoln. The speech took place in 1858. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He is from the state Illinois. When the American Civil War took place abolishing slavery was not his primary target. It was to save the Union. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure; permanently half slave and half free. Lincoln does not think that the “house” can stand if it is divided. He does not believe that the government can endure to be half slave and half free. He does not believe the union to be dissolved, he does not want the union to fall, but he wishes that the union wont be divided. He is speaking to the gentlemen of the convention. The speech took place so he could get voters...

...A House Divided Almost one hundred fifty years have passed since brother fought brother in America’s deadliest war. This seems foreign to modern day Americans who have always known a united, strong and prosperous Union. Yet a century and half ago Americans were deeply divided over the practice of slavery. This division would lead to war and the death of over six hundred thousand Americans. Yet there are some who believe that the Civil War could have been avoided, and by so doing the Union would have been preserved. Those who hold this view believe that the solution laid in maintaining the division of slave and free states. They believe that not enough was done to maintain the nation as half slave and the other half as free. For one to prescribe to this notion that the nation could have been divided yet united one must dismiss the numerous efforts made in the decade leading up to the Civil War. There were many factors that lead to this conflict probably the most significant event was America emerging as the victor in the Mexican American War. America’s victory resulted in an enormous amount of land being opened up for new territories. These territories...

...Lincoln's Speech Abraham Lincoln's "House Divided" speech had a specific purpose for it. He was directing it mainly at the congressmen and the President, and it's purpose was to show them how America was hurting itself by fighting endlessley over slavery. His speech was one of the most influential speeches in the history of the US. Lincoln was talking to the congressmen and the President because they were the people who could do something about all of these issues. He pointed out many of the wrongdoings of the government, and how the Dred Scott decision was a major turning point away from the advancement of the US. By treating slaves as property, and not as people, America was slowly destroying itself from the inside out, and that would eventually lead to violence and destruction. He tried to get people to listen to him not by merely making a political speech, but also trying to show them that what was going on wasn't right. He was saying that people need to value the country as a whole over their own specific ideas (whether it be about slavery or another issue.) He talked about "points" gained in favor of slavery in what seemed to be a well timed game on the part of the government. It systematically tried to permit slavery all over the country, and take away any rights that may or may have not been already granted to slaves. In conclusion, Lincoln was trying to appeal to the inner emotions of each delegate...

...A House Divided I was seven when my parents divorced. Seven years old when I was told that we’d be moving out of the house that I’ve lived in since the start of my existence, and that my dad wouldn’t be coming with us. I remember watching the house that held all of my memories fade away in the horizon line as we drove away. My dad moved into a small apartment in the city and my mom, brother, sister and I moved into a different apartment so far from him. At first the divorce didn't seem so bad, I still saw my dad twice a week and every other weekend. I got to have two christmases, two birthdays, two thanksgivings, two of everything. For most people the first couple of years are the hardest, but for me, they were the easiest. After a while...

...House divided cannot stand Jermaine Morehead Herzing House divided cannot stand Abraham Lincoln, who was a president in the United States, insisted on the saying “a house divided cannot stand.” Based on the issue of slavery, that was a sign of lack of unity among the Americans when it had gone to the extent that it was seen as a reasonable thing to enslave others. Citizens were given the right to decide to enslave the less fortunate and no third party that would question the act. According to Lincoln, the nation was having half slaves and half free people. The nation at large will have to have been united and work in one direction. For those who were against the slavery to push forward to make sure they attain their goal of making the nation slavery free. The government will have a difficult time handling the disunited state of the citizens; they have to come to an agreement for the country to stand (DiLorenzo, 2009). Thesis statement: it is an inductive argument based on Abraham Lincoln speech on” the house divided cannot stand.” It is inductive because the evidence is presented first, and then a conclusion is drawn from them. There was an argument on whether to let those who were enslaved to be free or the slavery persist in the territory. Congress tried to eliminate slavery among the people but after few days it was rekindled, and all territories were freely practicing slavery. It was declared that...

...Amber Huckabee Mrs. Miller English III Honors 21 February 2013 Allusion Report #1: Divided House The Divided House is a historical allusion. It is considered a historical allusion rather than a biblical or classical because the “Divided House” was a speech given in 1858 by Lincoln and has affected today’s society. The purpose of the “Divided House” speech was for Lincoln to tell the public what he thought the future would hold. To him, the idea of the slaves moving westward was a horrible idea, and thought all slavery should be kept in the south. The “Divided House” is important culturally for multiple reasons. First off, the “Divided House” kind of is what set today’s black and white society as we know. Without this important speech, slavery may have moved out west and continued longer that what it had. If Lincoln hadn’t stated, “I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free.” (Lincoln), we may even have slavery today due to the fact that the west is such a vast property to control. Also, the “Divided House” helped with the beginning of the end of slavery. After Lincoln’s speech, segregation had started and eventually the 13th amendment was passed which banned slavery all together. Some important information you may want to know about the “Divided House” is that it was one of Lincolns major speeches told in the year 1858 in Springfield. The purpose of the speech was to convince Americans to keep slavery in the South. By keeping slaves...

...Tati Chermayeff AP Government & Politics November 5, 2015 Divided Government FRQ Jeffrey A. Fine, Ph.D, defines a unified government as one where the same party controls the presidency and both houses of Congress. This form of leadership is the contradictory of divided government. Although uncommon in most presidencies of the 21st century, Mr. Obama enjoyed a democratic majority within the House for the first two years of his first term, starting in 2008. Typically, a unified government encounters little trouble when enacting laws. The president is less likely to veto Congressional legislation, vise-versa, when there are minimal ideological differences between the legislative and executive branches. The larger a party majority in Congress is, the less likely it is for a gridlock to occur. The majority can suppress the minority and easily push their own agendas forward. Like wise, the filibuster is less menacing under the reign of a unified government with a large majority. Minorities often use filibusters to assert their power, however, with an overpowering large majority the ruling party can overturn the filibuster with a cloture....

...ManyMuch literaturesworks of literature have a major theme that carriescarry the story. This theme is often evident in a certain scene. In Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, Mercutio’s speech in Aact III reflects one of the major themes of the story: A house divided cannot stand. This is a major theme of the story because it leads to Mercutio’s demise, it gets Tybalt angry at Romeo for crashing the party, and it carries the plot and adds conflict because Romeo is in love with a Capulet. To begin, Mercutio’s death was to a fault of both the Montagues and Capulets. Mercutio says “A plague o’ both your houses” (2.1.103). Mercutio is cursing both Tybalt’s house because he stabbed Mercutio and Romeo’s house because he intervened causing...

...elections of the people. Their organizational structure is rather different, with the presidency being controlled mainly by one person and Congress being a rule of many. The Electoral College is the manner in which modern Americans elect their president. In the Electoral College, the general public believes that they are casting a vote for the candidate that they wish to be sworn in as Commander In Chief, but in reality, they are voting for the elector that they wish to vote. The elector will generally vote the way of the majority in the region that they are responsible for, which is determined by the districts from the House of Representatives, and the candidate who garners the largest portion of electoral votes wins the election. This election occurs every four years. Congress, on the other hand, is directly by the people and elections for all 435 members of the House of Representatives and one third of The Senate are held. Although these two processes are very different, there are some similarities. For example, neither of the two branches have unlimited terms for members and both are derived from the people’s votes, either directly or indirectly. The organization of the Executive branch and Congress are also rather different....

...argued that congress does successfully fulfil its role depending on which party is in control of the House and which is in control of the senate, therefore it can be argued that the powers congress has and how well they fulfil their roles are dependent on which party controls congress and which controls the white house. Congress has the power of oversight of the executive; one very important power relating to this is the power to override the presidential veto, this power of congress supports the argument that congress does remain a powerful body as they have the power to go against the presidents wishes. The separation of powers in the United States causes this power to be extremely effective, because they work independently, they can oversee the executive work and therefore hold them accountable. In addition, members of congress are experienced and therefore are very skilled at overseeing the work of the executive, an example of this is Senator Leahy, who has seen the confirmation of hundreds of federal judges who are appointed by the executive. However this power of oversight is limited mainly towards divided government, during a united government congress acts as a lapdog, and do not wish to embarrass the president from their own party, this is evident in the first two years of G.W.B’s first presidency, before the mid-term the republican party was in control of both the house and the senate were controlled by the republican party, also during Clintons first two years as president...

...On-line A Government Divided A Government Divided Based on the U.S. National Debt each American citizen contributed debt is $47,724.00. This does not mean that we are accruing debt our self this is a representative number of how much debt is comparison to all the American citizens (US Debt, 2011). According to the U.S. Social Security Office the average income for an American citizen is $41,673.83 (Social Security Administration, 2011). Although these statistics are loosely based the average is a sample. One could argue it is not accurate to the current economic standings although the debt values are. This explains why currently the approval rating for Congress is below 20% according to the new Gallup polls (Gallup, 2011). The Washington Post posted an article called, Poll: Voters say throw out entire Congress, where the writer explains that Americans are displeased by Congress and a high percentage wish they were all removed (The Washington Post, 2011). All of these statistics are pretty predictable considering the 112th Congress is filled with uncompromising members who value the census of their constituents over the importance of making good Public Policy. In addition, the loyalty is no longer focused on making good “Public Policy,” it lies with member’s political party. As a result members are unwilling to work together which leaves bills on hold and a lack of oversight. Presently, we are faced with a divided government and a President...

The south wanted to secede from the north, but the north wished to stay united. Unity of the United States of America is important therefore the south should not have been allowed to secede. If the south would have won the Civil War and seceded we would have two opposing forces and It takes two opposing forces to have conflict as a result if the United States of America was divided there would be more conflict because there would be two different governments, militaries, presidents, sets of laws, etc. Likewise if the United States of America divided it could have caused future civil wars and...
