...Brother and sister, with a common pin, Frowning like serious lepidopterists. The little surgeon pierces the thin eyes. Crouched on plump haunches, as a mantis prays She shrieks to eviscerate its abdomen. The lesson is the same. The maid removes Both prodigies from their interest in science. The girl, in lemon frock, begins to scream As the maimed, teetering thing attempts its flight. She is herself a thing of summery light, Frail as a flower in this blue August air, Not marked for some late grief that cannot speak. The mind swings inward on itself in fear Swayed towards nausea from each normal sign. Heredity of cruelty everywhere, And everywhere the frocks of summer torn, The long look back to see where choice is born, As summer grass sways to the scythe’s design. “A Lesson for This Sunday” from Collected Poems: 1948-1984 by Derek Walcott. Copyright © 1986 by Derek Walcott. Reprinted by permission of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, LLC. A Lesson for This Sunday by Derek Walcott The title of the poem hints that its focus is on a lesson to be learnt in the poem. The poem is about man’s cruelty to nature. The persona is lying on his hammock, relaxing and enjoying the tranquility and beauty of nature. Suddenly, the persona’s interaction with this paradise is interrupted by small children in stanza two. They chase and are successful in catching a butterfly, disemboweling it before...

...Derek Walcott’s “A Lesson for this Sunday” is a steady buildup from a masculine persona lazily remarking a summer’s day; however it quickly turns to a source of annoyance as the cries of children shatter the reflective mirror of paradise leaving him introspective and critical of their actions as they destroy a part of nature. The poem in itself is melodic, not with a particular rhyme scheme however but with the way Walcott wove his words. The poem elicits a theme of deep introspection, contemplation, death and philosophy of human nature. “A Lesson for this Sunday”, aside from being the title is a window of opportunity to view the poem at face, but a second read foreshadows the end conclusion. The first stanza follows in painting a picture of a lazy and beautiful summer day, specifically a Sunday that the persona is enjoying “In scansion gentler than my hammock swings”. He uses derivatives of the word idle in the first and last lines of the stanza “The growing idleness of summer grass”, “Since I lie idling from the thought in things,” along with the lack of punctuation emphasizes just how easy going and relaxed it is. However, the tone shifts immediately as the reader encounters the second stanza, “Until I hear the cries Of two small children hunting yellow wings.” The persona is disturbed, shaken, pulled from his meditative mood by the sounds of these children chasing a butterfly. He states “Who break my Sabbath with the thought of sin.” They have ruined his day of rest, and...

...Introduction 1.1. Bloody Sunday Sunday the 27th of January 1972 became known as the Bloody Sunday. This Sunday represents a very important point in the history of the partition of Ireland and the relationship between England and Northern Ireland. 14 people had been shot and another 13 wounded by British soldiers during a protest in the northern Irish city Derry for civil rights and against the British occupation policy on this very Sunday. The Events that took place on Bloody Sunday had been the initial phase for the conflict in Northern Ireland to escalate. As a result, the conflict got worse. Shortly after the declaration of the happenings in Derry, an enraged crowd of northern Irish citizens occupied the British Embassy in Dublin and burned it down. To simplify the enormous amount of the subject matter “Ireland”, in the following lesson, there is going to be a didactical cutback. To begin with, the students are supposed to get to know some basic facts about the divided Ireland. In this one lesson, it is not about representing the topic in all of its details. To a greater degree, it is about approaching the topic particularly with regard to war and peace. The children shall know, what happened on Bloody Sunday and they should be able to classify the events into the historical-cultural background.1 1.2. The Song “Sunday, Bloody Sunday by U2” One of the most famous Bands in the World, U2, was founded in 1983. The Single “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” is the reason for the breakthrough...

...My Testimony Cimera Reid Liberty University Abstract Mathews 22:14 states, “For many are called, but few are chosen.” Many have used this bible verse for many different reasons. Well when it pertains to salvation, ALL are called. My life thus far has been somewhat of a roller coaster and I feel as if things are just starting to level out. I’ve had my share of highs and lows. There was a point where I felt like there was nowhere else to turn, and in that instant is when I realized who had been there for so long, always in my corner. Even still I have my moments where there is a bit of doubt, but I don’t think I’d be human if I didn’t sometimes have that doubt. In the end my faith shines through, and Christ reassures me of just exactly who I am. My life before I cam to Christ It’s safe to say that I have been in church for just about the greatest part of my life thus far. I have always had an idea of who God is and who Christ is from Sunday school and Sunday morning service. I grew up learning different bible stories that taught us life lessons. I learned about having faith, stepping out on that faith, believing in God for strength, and knowing where my refuge is. I learned all these things and I could talk to you about it at the time, but I didn't really quite grasp what they meant. I knew who God was, but I didn’t KNOW who God was for myself. How I Came to a Cognitive Knowledge of Who Jesus is and What He Did For Me? In middle school I was in foster...

...lifestyle for Christ. Although the mission is to develop disciples for Christ, youth pastors seem to be losing many youth to the ways of the world. In New England people wanted to start educating their children, and change their sinful nature (Senter, 2010, p. 5). Sunday school started hundreds of years ago, before child labor laws. Children were working during the week, and on Sundays they were not doing anything productive and people were worried (Senter, p. 7). The pastors at the church generally treated youth no differently than they did adults (Senter, p. 8). Many parents did not want their children to attend the Sunday school for fear of persecution (Senter, p. 5). This is how Sunday school started, and originally it was establish to teach youth the skills of reading the Bible. During the early 19th century, adults wanted to establish Bible lessons to keep youth out of trouble, and this evolved into youth having their own church service separate from adults (Senter). Pastors began to treat the youth as young adults, but not equal to adults (Senter). One current trend in some churches is having the youth in the same group as adults for part of the time, and then separate for the other part of the lesson. Youth leaders today are very active in youth ministry and the youth are still allowed to behave like you, rather than part of the working force. Whether in a separate youth church, or following a newer model of attending church with adults,...

...Chris Abani’s novel, GraceLand, tells a heartbreaking journey of a teenage boy named Elvis, and his slow escape from the impoverished lifestyle of Lagos, Nigeria. Elvis is smart and independent, having lost his mother when he was a young boy and growing up with a distant relationship with his father, Sunday. Throughout the novel, Elvis’s relationship with each character becomes important in defining Elvis’s character as a whole. Each character has a very distinct influence on Elvis and it is these different influences that shape him into the puzzled and distraught youth he is illustrated as in the novel. Elvis lives a different life when he is in Afikpo. In the first flashbacks, it is easy to see how close Elvis is with his mother, Beatrice. Beatrice is later revealed to be suffering from breast cancer and inevitable dies when Elvis is still young. But before she does, she makes full effort to teach her son everything necessary for him after she dies. Beatrice tells her mother, Oye, “I have taught him to sew, to iron, to cook, to read and write at a level beyond his age” (Abani 38). Beatrice’s teachings explains how Elvis is well beyond his years at age sixteen; he loves reading eminent works of literature and cares enough for his step-siblings to buy them food since their mother, Comfort, never would. After Beatrice passes away, Elvis remains close to his grandmother, Oye. In a later flashback, Elvis would read her letters from her pen pals. Abani writes, “Elvis...

...Have you ever learned a valuable lesson that has helped you? In the book A Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Peck, Rob also learned some valuable lessons throughout the book. His friends and family members taught him those lessons to help him later in life. SomeA few of the important lessons he learns are life isn’t fair, death is a part of life, and respect and listen your elders. Rob learns that life isn’t fair mostly from his father. Rob wanted to go to a baseball game on Sunday but his father told him he couldn’t. In the text, Rob’s dad says, “Rob, the Book of Shaker forbids frills on any day. And that goes double on Sunday.”(32) People think that Rob’s dad isn’t as good as them because he can’t read or write. Rob finds this out when he asks his dad why he can’t vote. ...succeeding.” This quote, spoken by Robert John Meehan, presents the idea that every individual learns differently, and expanding on this idea, even different age groups learn variously. Statistics show that teenagers are more likely to attend some sort of worship service over adults (“What”). Our generation is slowly getting back into church and the youth is finding their way back. Every minister spends a great deal of time crafting lessons to reach out and impact individuals with the hope of advancing the kingdom of God. Keeping the audience in mind, pastors compose Bible teachings for every age to perceive. With an...

...In the words of Kurt Vonnegut, “Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, ‘It might have been.’ ” In the poem, “Those Winter Sundays,” Robert Hayden reflects on what might have been. He remembers his failings as a child. Specifically, Hayden reflects on his unappreciativeness towards his father. Towards a man who did his best to give him a good life. Since Hayden deeply regretted his ungratefulness towards his father as a child, he used imagery, personification, symbolism, and other devices to craft an inspiring poem that teaches a moral lesson about gratitude and thankfulness. At its heart, this poem is about love. It’s about the regret that the speaker has for not loving his father enough during his childhood. As a child, the speaker...

...When I was younger, my family didn’t go to church. Sunday mornings were the one day my parents could sleep in and they had conflicting views on religion so it was easier for both my parents if we simply didn’t go. My mother had grown up as a Christian but hadn’t ever been a member of a church. My father, however, was an atheist. He was adamant there was no God. Then, when I was eleven, my whole life changed. My brother and I went to Vacation Bible School with my grandmother. When the end of the week came, my brother and I asked our parents to go to the Sunday service so we could perform the song we had learned with the other kids from the church. Begrudgingly, my father agreed to go with us and my mother. This decision to begin going to church...

...Capstone Simulation As a major part of this course, you engaged in a Cybersecurity Capstone Simulation. A virtual environment was created, simulating the United States. You were divided into teams representing major sectors of the US environment: * Finance * Federal Government * Defense Contractor * Electrical Power s * Telecommunications The Simulation activity consisted of four rounds, which you now have completed. In each round, your team made a range of decisions in technical, managerial and policy areas. The decisions were input into the virtual environment. In addition, environmental events such as hacker attacks, an economic downturn, or natural disasters were injected into the environment. The interplay of teams’ decisions and events resulted in various outcomes for each team on a number of indicators such as profitability, employee morale, national security, and system downtime. Each team analyzed how their organization performed in the round, and applied lessons learned as they made decisions for the simulation. Grading on the assignments depended less on the outcomes of a team’s performance, and more on how each team analyzed their environment and options and how they justified their decisions. The environment provided a place for each team to discuss the justifications for their decisions. Now that the final round has completed, please summarize your team’s results, observations and lessons learned in the Week 12 Team Assignment...

...word—metamorphosis—as a change or transformation, can be misleading. In all actuality, the transfiguration of Jesus’ face and clothing was not a change into something new, but rather an uncovering of Who Jesus really is! Peter, James and John witnessed, if only for a moment, the glory of God revealed in the Son. This was the true Jesus. There is a lot of talk these days in theological circles as to—“Who is the Real Jesus?” Few, if any, folks will dispute the fact that a man named Jesus did indeed walk this earth 2,000 years ago, and through the work of ‘outside sources’, that is, unbiased sources outside of the Bible—like Jewish historians from that time--we know it to be fact that Jesus was indeed crucified under the watch of Pontius Pilate. And much of the historicity of the Book of Acts is also backed up by other reliable sources as well. So there can be little doubt that there was a Real Jesus… …the question that many are asking is Who that Real Jesus is. This is probably the same thing that the folks who were living during Jesus’ time on earth were asking as well—including the disciples. In the chapter before this morning’s Lesson Jesus asked His disciples: “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They came up with a number of answers. Then Jesus asked “But what about you? Who do you say that I am?” “Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Well, Peter was correct… …but Peter still did not understand exactly...
