The main theme of the short story is regret and the story basically focuses on the regret of choices one makes in life. The story revolves around the protagonist Ian Harter and is told by a third person limited narrator, as only Ian’s thoughts appear in the story. Ian is our eyes throughout the story and all feelings and descriptions are from his point of view, which forces the reader to have certain impressions of the other characters. The story begins in medias res with Ian opening the door to his house finding an old alcoholic man standing on his doorstep. Ian reluctantly lets the man, Michael Phelps, into his house where Ian is alone with his daughter, Corinne, while his wife, Karen, is “staying at her mother’s for a while” (p. 2, l. 31). After asking the stranger a few questions including offering him a glass of water, Ian talks him into calling a taxi. While waiting for the taxi to arrive, Ian sees his chance to question Michael and it is revealed that Michael was associated with the former owners of Ian’s house. ...PARADISE BEYOND THE BEATEN TRACK Our family took a long-overdue vacation to the northern areas last June. It was a well-planned trip with members of four families getting together for a chill-out. We congregated at Islamabad and started on our “voyage of discovery” early the next morning. To allow all of us to enjoy to the full we had hired a coaster driven by a very seasoned young driver who is familiar with the area. Our route took us from Islamabad to Abbotabad to Mansehra to Balakot to Kaghan to Naran to Shogran to Lalezar to Nathiagali to Ayubia to Islamabad & back to Lahore. The trip from Islamabad to Abbotabad was quite good. A good place for a short stopover in Abbotabad for refreshments & freshening up is Lahore Chatkhara Restaurant where the food & snacks are quite good. The tea is exceptionally good. No trip is complete without a puncture or two. Our coaster had one near the restaurant here. So we lost about half an hour in the process of changing the tyres and repairing the punctured one. Mansehra is a sleepy little town; Balakot was very neat and well arranged before the earthquake. The recently planted tea bushes above the road created a very pleasing sight. Kaghan is another place worth spending a day in. Little restaurants line the road and tracks meander down to the silvery Kunhar River rushing past the town. After saying, "I will do it," Dashrath Manjhi managed to build single-handedly a 360-foot-long (110 m), 25-foot-high (7.6 m) and 30-foot-wide (9.1 m) road by cutting a mountain of Gehlour hills with just a hammer, chisel and nails. He worked day and night for 22 years from 1960 to 1982. This road was a blessing for the people of the area as it reduced the distance between Atri and Wazirganj blocks of Gaya district from 75 km to just one km. ...John Updike “A & P” We were asked in class to write a short paper after being asked the question, “What is the most intriguing or interesting piece we have read, and why?” My response to this question was John Updike’s “A & P”. “A & P” was not the best or even the most interesting piece that I have read. However, out of all of the stories that I have read for this class, “A & P” left me with the most questions. Some of the questions that I asked myself after reading this story were, “What did Updike want me to get from this story?” The second question I asked myself was, “Was there any symbolism or foreshadowing in the extreme amount of detail that Updike used in this story?” The last question that I wanted to answer was, “Is that it?” Did John Updike really write a story about dress code of a supermarket? Or, did he write this story about the moral dilemma a young clerk faces when he believes his boss was rude to three underdressed girls? John Updike’s “A & P” was first published in 1962. Her father and she have been taking float trips as long as she can remember, but Sam has been offered a scholarship to a boarding school, and therefore this year’s trip seems to be the last one. Along with Sam and her father two others are joining them for the trip, Sam’s uncle Harry and a client of his, whose name is Laydon. With him Laydon is bringing a couple of guns, including a ‘’Nine-millimeter Ruger semiautomatic gun’’ which he intends to teach Sam how to use. She gets pretty good at it, but decides that her father must not know about the shooting. This little secret brings Laydon and Sam closer together and results in a creepy situation one night around the fire after Harry and Sam’s father have gone to bed. Laydon tries to touch Sam on some private spots, but she is clever enough to stop him and walk away. At the end of the trip Sam tells her father that she is now determined to accept the scholarship, maybe because he has discovered a bullet in Sam’s pocket just seconds before. Who is Sam? Sam is right on the edge of saying goodbye to her childhood and this trip makes her take the step to become a more independent and sophisticated young woman, this is also the story’s main theme. ...the mountains of northern California. I’m not sure exactly where I am, but it is a bright day with some clouds and blue skies, but off to the distance I can see storm clouds. All I have with me is my backpack containing a notebook, a pen, a pair of gym shorts, a spare t-shirt, a pack of cigarettes with a lighter, a bottle of water and a couple of granola bars. In my pockets I have a cell phone with a dead battery, a pocketknife, and my wallet with five dollars and my I.D. inside. I’m walking, surrounded by trees of all types. There is a light breeze, but it’s quiet as I walk and look around. As I’m walking, the road is flat and somewhat narrow, but it is easy going for the most part, with random spots where the road becomes rocky and somewhat stressful, but it evens itself out and becomes smooth for a period of time again. I feel happy and serene, but exhausted at times and in need of a bit of rest, but I always continue and begin to walk again. As I’m walking, I come to a two-way fork in the road with a sign in the middle. The sign has two arrows with words printed on them. Each arrow is pointing in the opposite direction of the other. To the left I have the choice to walk to the city, while to the right I have the choice to walk to a small country town. After some thought and consideration of both of my choices, I eventually choose to head towards the Country. The theme of these stories is the hardships that these women suffer during their life can be suffered by anyone but growing up in a discriminatory situation creates a more dramatic story. The main themes in “Country Lovers” are love and racial politics. Country Lovers was written during a time when Africa was suffering from racial segregation. This story has irony throughout the entire story. Thebedi and Paulus grow up together and they fall in love. They grew up in Africa during the apartheid when their country did not allow interracial relationships. Paulus Eysendyck was the son of the farm owner and Thebedi’s father worked on that farm. They both knew they could not be together publicly. During the apartheid in Africa it was illegal to have an interracial relationship. There are several dramatic effects in this story.
