In A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, a young boy who runs away from home because of the war that was currently happening in his country. Throughout his life, he had to witness a lot of horrible things which lead him to becoming a whole other person. One of the key parts which made Ishmael complete his journey was the second stage of the Hero’s Journey, which is called Initiation. In Initiation there is a significant substage called Apotheosis. Apotheosis is when the hero is “down for the count” and no one has faith that they’ll survive. Because of this, the hero gains confidence. Ishmael experiences his Apotheosis when he didn’t know if he was going to survive his journey. His goal in life was to “survive each passing day” (Beah, 69). This

Tangled: A Hero's Journey

...loves a good hero story, whether it be a war hero, a revolutionary, or anything inbetween. A good character that people love to root for and fall in love with. Joseph Campbell recognized a pattern in these heroes: they may be different people, but they share the same underlying path. They follow the three stages of a hero’s journey, departure, initiation, and the inevitable return. Alongside this are characteristics and major plot points that all point to the same person, the hero with a thousand faces. The reimagined story, Tangled, follows the journey of Rapunzel on her way to see the lanterns that cloud the night sky every year on her birthday. The story follows Campbell’s pattern well, presenting yet another...

The Hunger Games Compared to "The Heroes Journey"

...Stephanie Levy Pd.7 The Hunger Games Essay “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” This quote was said by Joseph Campbell who also wrote The Hero’s Journey: A Summary of the Steps. These steps begins with the character in just his/her ordinary world and ending with that character, having gone through the most traumatic moment if their life, returning home and achieving what they set out to do. ...outstanding success. A “hero displays traits,” a hero “saves others”, and a hero “is culture.” Beowulf displays a hero trait by either showing all his strengths and powers, but hero’s traits can also show weakness. Hero's Journey

...defined by their past, but instead, what and who they find within themselves in a dire moment of need. There is a hero in everyone. Most people just need the right time and the courage to bring out their inner hero. The writer and philosopher Joseph Campbell wrote about the stages each hero goes through in their journey in a book called, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. In Finding Nemo, there is tragedy before there is hope. There is also comedy, adventure and suspense to keep the viewer on their feet. Marlin, a clown fish father and the hero, embarks on a journey to find his son, Nemo. Marlin’s wife dies protecting Nemo and his siblings when they are still eggs and are being attacked by an eel who is trying to eat them. After the attack, Nemo is the only egg left. Nemo survives, but is injured, which leaves him with a gimp fin. This leaves the excited and adventurous Marlin a very scared and timid clownfish. When Nemo is captured by a scuba diver, Marlin must swim from the Great Barrier Reef to Sydney, Australia to save him. Marlin will find the hero within himself and act fast to save Nemo while also allowing him to learn and grow without sheltering him too much. The hero’s ordinary world consists of Marlin and his son Nemo, confined to the safety and protection of the ocean by their sea anemone. Although this may seem uncommon, in real life, this is a very common relationship between clownfish and anemone. Without the anemone, clownfish usually become prey to bigger predator fish...

Miraculous forces are encountered there and a decisive victory is won. He then returns from this mysterious land, bringing an elixir to bene¿t his fellow men. Employment Law

...A business without a plan is planning to fail I remember the good feeling of starting a new business back when I was a teenager. I used to get so excited in starting, that I just started right away without planning anything. I just couldn't wait to start. Those are of other subjects that can be found on my journey but long story short, a business without a plan is a plan to fail. I have a hobby of fictional stories which helped me write successful business plans, and I am here to tell you my approach of how I make one. Dreaming a business plan You think I've gone mad expressing that you should "dream" a business plan. But let me explain what I mean here. A business plan is like a story, a series of episodes in a fantasy realm. A fantasy story always has a hero, a villain, friends that join forces and battles across many fields. Think of all the strategy actions in a business as a fictional story, and that way the creative side and facts will spring up from the surface, showing the visible paths that you need to follow, as does a hero. Let's go through this one by one with the main sections of a business plan, to which then you can choose however you wish. The mission Every business has a mission. It is the absolute purpose of why that particular company was founded. Facebook, for example was founded to make sharing and connections between friends more accessible. Milkbuster's mission is to allow entrepreneurs to share stories to build bridges of ideas to help creativity...

...Oedipus complex.[Petocz: 151] This is conveyed through the line “her noisy charity filled the world for him”. [Greene: 167] The second part begins with an epiphanic episode, expressed in the title; a homophone to the children’s game “Eye spy”, playing which you must unexpectedly open your eyes. The boy suddenly realised that while his mum was ‘boisterous and kindly, his father was very like himself, doing things in the dark’.[Greene: 169] At this very moment of epiphany he loses his innocence and eradicates his flaw. This is the only story where the loss of innocence is seen as a natural process. In two other stories “The innocent” and “Under the garden” there is a strong feeling of regret that childhood is gone. Both stories are written in a form of a journey where grown-up characters return to the place of their childhood. The main incongruity of “The innocent” is between the narrator’s...

Gilgamesh

...the Mesopotamian city of Uruk in about 2750 BCE. In the epic, he has an intimate friend, Enkidu, a naked wild man who has been civilized through the erotic arts of a temple priestess. With him Gilgamesh battles monsters, and when Enkidu dies, he is inconsolable. He sets out on a desperate journey to find the one man who can tell him how to escape death. Part of the fascination of Gilgamesh is that, like any great work of literature, it has much to tell us about ourselves. In giving voice to grief and the fear of death, perhaps more powerfully than any book written after it, in portraying love and vulnerability and the quest for wisdom, it has become a personal testimony for millions of readers in dozens of languages. But it also has a particular relevance in today's world, with its polarized fundamentalisms, each side fervently believing in its own righteousness, each on a crusade, or jihad, against what it perceives as an evil enemy. The hero of this epic is an antihero, a superman (a superpower, one might say) who doesn't know the difference between strength and arrogance. By preemptively attacking a monster, he brings on himself a disaster that can only be overcome by an agonizing journey, a quest that results in wisdom by proving its own futility. The epic has an extraordinarily sophisticated moral intelligence. In its emphasis on balance and in its refusal to side with either hero or...

Transformation of Gilgamesh

...The Transformation of Gilgamesh in the Epic of Gilgamesh  In many literary works we see significant transitions in the hero's character as the story is developed. This is also true in the Epic of Gilgamesh with its hero, Gilgamesh. In this narrative poem, we get glimpses of who Gilgamesh is and what his purposes and goals are. We see Gilgamesh act in many different ways -- as an overbearing ruler resented by his people, a courageous and strong fighter, a deflated, depressed man, and finally as a man who seems content with what he's accomplished. Through all of these transitions, we see Gilgamesh's attitude toward life change. The goals he has for his own life alter dramatically, and it is in these goals that we see Gilgamesh's transition from being a shallow, ruthless ruler to being an introspective, content man.  The epic begins with the men of Uruk describing Gilgamesh as an overly aggressive ruler. "'Gilgamesh leaves no son to his father; day and night his outrageousness continues unrestrained; And he is the shepherd of Uruk, the enclosure; He is their shepherd, and yet he oppresses them. Strong, handsome, and wise. . . Gilgamesh leaves no virgin to her lover.'"(p.18, Line 23-27) The citizens respect him, but they resent his sexual and physical aggression, so they plead to the gods to alleviate some of their burden. The gods resolve to create an equal for Gilgamesh to tame him and keep him in line. This equal, Enkidu, has an immediate impact on Gilgamesh. When they first...

...seductress. They are weakened along with being lost without a guide and a support. An example would be Penelope, wife of Odysseus since she is a mother, but while Odysseus is gone, and when suitors come along, in a way she tempts them in terms of power (of the role of king) and as a woman, but she actually never gives in to any of the men. The purpose of women was mainly to lament the losses for their men and also persuading for their safety. Criticism- Homer had written the Odyssey with a bit of over-the-top reiteration, along with the missing component of a sense of unity. However, even when Odysseus wasn’t on a scene, the lines of the story still indicate that he is...

The Hero's Journey In Beowulf

...Heroic Career Essay [Header spacing is correct in the Google Docs] “In the end we’re all alone, and no one is coming to save you” (Depaul, Nolan, 2011). Heroes, tend to be people who are remembered long after they are gone because of a deed or deeds they did throughout life. Regular civilians in ordinary jobs tend to not have as fortunate of a fate though. Real people might have touched others lives in ways that will be long forgotten, say MLB managers for example. It is a tough position to get into, as most managers are former players (“BR Bullpen,” 2014). Unfortunately though, hardly any managers are remembered after they are done managing. Their average salary is half that of the average player they manage, so they hardly get any recognition...

...Fu 1 Nathan Fu Ms. Hallford English 9H Period #3 10--12 The Hero Within Everyone will make the step to become a hero from humble and simple beginnings. Of course, the move to become a hero is not easy and they will face many obstacles and trials that will test the strength of their friendship. However, the hero will develop traits that will shape and mold to to prepare them for their final test. Our hero will transition from the known world where he thinks he know who he is and descend down into the Nadir, the darkest and lowest point in their journey, where he will be tested both physically and mentally. That is the case for Bilbo Baggins, a shy and reluctant hobbit in J.R.R Tolkein's The Hobbit, who was protected from the perils and dangers of the real world in the comfort of his hobbit-hole. In his journey, Bilbo has to make many judgments that leave him torn between his loyalty to his friends and doing the right thing. But it is these obstacles that fully initializes him as a true hero. In the beginning of the story, Bilbo seemed like the most unlikely hero when Gandalf and thirteen dwarves came and asked for him to join them on the quest, but in the end, Bilbo faces many situations, challenges and develop traits like selflessness, courage ,and wisdom that is essential to all heroes and will ultimately determine and define who he is, and whether if he will succeed as a hero or not.
