...Freedom Writers: A Message of Hope According to Joseph Campbell, a scholar of mythology states that, a hero is one who hero gives his or her life to something bigger than him or herself, to some higher end not to mention also the hero undergoes trials and tests to see if he or she has the courage, the knowledge and the capacity to survive. To explain what this means I will use the protagonist Erin Gruwell (starring Hilary Swank), in the 2007 drama film, Freedom Writers, directed and written by Richard LaGravenese, It is based on the book The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell (teacher by profession) who wrote the story based on Woodrow Wilson Classical High School in Long Beach, California. She started her teaching career as would any teacher; by doing a lesson plan. However her mistake was not taking the time to fully understand the type of students in her class room. Most of her students think the new teacher is “odd” because she does not believe what everyone else seems to know about these classes; they can read and they can write, and Ms. Gruwell expects them to do both. Everyone else seems to think they are stupid and beyond hope. They think this new teacher is “too young and too white to be working here,” and most of the kids in class predict she will leave after a day; one student gives her a month. The class is out of control, and there are more students than desks. The entire school is divided into groups ranging from “Beverly Hills” and “Da Ghetto” to “China Town”...

...Holocaust survivor stories. For example, Maus II and “Life is Beautiful” are two excellent versions of Holocaust victims experiences. In these traumatic scenarios both stories shared a unified message of appreciation and never giving up hope. In “Life is Beautiful” Guido convinces his son Joshua that their time in the Concentration Camp was a game, assuring him they would be reunited with Dora (Joshua’s mother) and return back home, presenting hope. In Maus II Vladek was infected with Typhus and struggled to even stand on his two feet, but Vladek had hope throughout his sickness which eventually led to his freedom from the Concentration Camp and the reunion of him and his wife Anja. Another important unified message demonstrated was appreciation, in “Life is Beautiful” Guido lives every moment with his son as if it is his last, appreciating the time he spends with Joshua. In Maus II after Vladek survives the Holocaust he appreciates every piece of food and money. For instance, Vladek refuses to throw away even a crumb of food and did not allow his son to use his wooden matches in order to save them. There are many messages “Life is beautiful” and Maus II demonstrate but in my opinion I believe appreciating what one has and never giving up hope are the most valuable. The unified messages presented in both “Life is beautiful” and Maus II can be applied to not only my life, but everyones. In todays society most people forget how much food is cherished, we forget that we should be...

...In the book of 40-55 it talks about the message of hope in exile presented by five different prophets. In those messages there are two themes. The instruction for life : in other words torah and “The Lord reigns” meaning the Kingdom of god. As we I go in-depth in the messages we would look at Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Deutero-Isaiah as well as Deuteronomistic Historian (DH) and the Pentateuch (also named P). Jeremiah sounds just like Hosea in 598-586. His words are revised in the Deuteronomistic language. Jeremiah emphasizes on the idolatry as God pleaded with his people. He keeps warned that Jerusalem would be captured and the inhabitants exiled to Babylon. Jeremiah's words were vehemently rejected and he was heavily persecuted....

...it was written, this message was revered as a message of hope. That hope is still felt whenever you read or listen to its words. Dr. King delivered his most memorable speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Delivering this message at this particular location had a lot of symbolic meaning to which many probably wouldn’t recognize. The Lincoln memorial is dedicated to the late President Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln fought for the abolishment of slavery by introducing the Emancipation Proclamation. In January 1st 1863 he delivered the final proclamation and became a symbolic figure in the Black American history. Knowing this, it is sure that Dr. King choose this location based on that fact. The moment of clarity while reading the “I Have a Dream” speech came when Dr. King began discussing the thoughts of his dream. Symbolically the statement “I have a dream” may not necessarily mean he was asleep and these thoughts came to him in a dream state, but more the ladder of hopeful vision. The notion that he mentioned the locations where most blacks lived or even regarded the locations in the north as the slums and ghettos, truly enforced his message that the countries climate and attitude towards the black minority had to change. In closing, Dr. King believed in the unity of all men and woman. He believed that no matter your race we are all born in the image of God and should be treated all the same. His message was a beacon of hope during his time period...

...OT 614 COURSE LECTURER: PASTOR AKINOLA TOPIC: BOOK SUMMARY OF “A STUDY OF THE MAJOR AND MINOR PROPHETS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT” by Emmanuel Itapson & George E. Janvier prepared by: AYOBAMIJI JOSEPH OLUWAGUNNA March 2013 CHAPTER 1 It is pertinent to have a good understanding of hermeneutics in order to have a correct content and context concepts in the interpretation of the prophets. Because the Bible is quite uniquely different from all other types of literature – its divine Authorship and inspiration, being the major distinguishing feature and prominent hallmark, the interpretation requires divine guidance. Inspiration is the act of the Holy Spirit in leading a man to record the message of God in written documentary while Interpretation is the act of a man in determining the meaning as intended by God in the original passage and how it applies to us today. Interpretation involves skill, but more critically involves Spirit in keeping to rightness. The grammatico-historical method is generally applicable in Biblical hermeneutics to both basic, broad types of writings contained in Biblical literature. Categorized broadly as prose and poetry. Further insights is gained when there is understanding of the literature type being interpreted. Features of Old Testament prophecy: • Bible prophecy is for both CURRENT as well as COMING applications. • Because Bible prophecy is rooted heavily in historical...

...through a devastating situation, one may lose hope and it may difficult for one to be optimistic about what is yet to come. Emily Mandel’s novel Station Eleven gives the reader a glimpse into the life before and after an apocalypse. An epidemic, known as the Georgia Flu has arrived to the city of Toronto and is spreading rapidly like a wildfire. Residents are advised to stock up on food and leave the city as soon as possible. Emily Mandel takes the reader forward in time, twenty years later when the epidemic has wiped out most of the population. Like any post-apocalyptic text, Station Eleven incorporates the genre convention of survival, both in the typical way one would expect, but also in a way in which it is challenged. As Mandel begins...

...easier to read and understand, some used close to the original translation with words that many people would have to look up, and some have a happy medium of both the original text mixed with a modern translation to aid in understanding. Even though every bible is worded different the message stays the same with Ezekiel 37: 1-14. In this passage the prophet Ezekiel is having a vision. God has taken him to a valley full of dried out bones that have been scattered about. This is when God asks Ezekiel if he thinks the bones could live. Ezekiel is smart and answers God by saying that only that he, the lord, could know the answer. God then demonstrates his power by telling Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones. While Ezekiel is prophesying the bones reconnect, form tendons, muscles, skin, and become living people. God then tells Ezekiel that he will restore his people from their grave, and that the land of Israel will once again become his land[1]. The meaning of Ezekiel 37 can sometimes be hard to understand. The scribes who first interpreted the Old Testament took the text literally. They believed that the Old Testament was saying that the bones were those of the dead Israelites, and thought the message was about actual resurrection of the dead[2]. The scribes are most likely wrong, but at the time they had no way of knowing a hundred percent of what the bible was trying to tell you. Today there is still no way of knowing a 100 percent sure of what the bible is telling because of all...

...The fight for equality of races in the mid-20th century led to the Civil Rights March in Washington D.C. in 1963, this fight is reflected in the picture of Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. taken by Parks. The image shows Dr. King addressing to the people at the Lincoln Memorial with an officer to his left and part of an American flag to his right. Looking at the image at first glance it is obvious what historic event it represented and its cultural context. The message of the image is to depict Dr. King as the ambassador of the civil rights movement and hope of equality for African Americans. The image has its focus on Dr. King as he speaks to the people about the necessity of equal rights. The composition of the image makes Dr. King the most important component, his face is clear and free of blur unlike other parts of the content. This focus...

...throughout Funder’s Stasiland, yet grief overwhelms the positivity. The text comprises stories of courage and hope, but overall the reader is left feeling mournful. Funder’s anecdotes of failed lives highlight the loss of hope felt by herself and her characters. She uses structure as a means of diffusing the tragedy of her encounters, as well as symbolism and descriptive language. A feeling of hopelessness engulfs several of the stories in Funder’s collection. Although Frau Paul essentially finds closure, her life is still overruled by the losses she experienced. Funder describes her as a ‘teary, guilt-wracked wreck’, and this shows that she is unstable and cannot find peace. ‘She seems wobbly’ and the audience is led to believe that her closure is not what it seems. Even though she has been reunited with her son, the relationship is tense and uncomfortable for Frau Paul, as she is still left with the baggage of the choice she made. Klaus Renft, the ex-musician, lives in a state of oblivion, yet he is ‘a survivor’. ‘Cushioned by alcohol, his landings are soft,’ and he uses his self-destructive habits, smoking and drinking, to escape from his nauseating past. The repetition of the colour ‘grey’ symbolises his relationship with the GDR. Klaus Renft has been damaged, and his only comfort now is music and liquor, a man ‘singing himself happy’. Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler lives in the hope of socialism returning, that and nothing more. He is in hiding, using his wife’s ‘maiden name, not his...

...The novel That Eye, The Sky thoroughly explores many different aspects of hope and faith through religious beliefs and symbolism and on how it can impact people’s lives, however faith is what is really trying to be expressed through this novel. Ort’s father, Sam, went into a come as a result of a car accident. Ort looked up to his father as some kind of God like figure and now that he’s gone, Ort has looked to the sky for help. The sky and the light play an important role in understanding and what is happening. The light above Ort’s house that only Ort can see is representing religion. Ort perceives the sky to be the eye of God, creator of all things and the source of light in human beings. This same light is also represented in the sheep seen over his house which further enhances the fact that he is being watched day and night. Winton is trying to emphasise faith in God in this novel by sending his message using the story of an innocent boy’s life to further support the fact that faith is around us all the time in the simplest forms. The simplest, yet most powerful message is shown in how Ort looks up to the bright sky as if it is God. The light that the sky gives off is also portrayed in the sheep, as if they were some kind of fluffy white cloud, that are above Ort’s house, which develops the idea of the fact that Ort is being watched over by God day and night. This also leads to a religious symbolism as this small light could be equivalent to the Star of Bethlehem shining...

...the grand gothic church with its bells ringing, I wanted leave immediately to go on a German vacation. The scene truly captured the best of the area, and left me wanting more. I would be proud if that was my home. The city streets were full of flags, flags symbolizing national pride, flags with swastikas on them. I can see the emotional appeal of this imagery, because it was working on me almost 80 years later, minus the swastikas. It is not hard to see or feel how the country men of Germany would have seen this film in their own hometowns after World War I. Imagine downtrodden people, in an economic depression and in need of a leader who could restore hope. The next scene with farmers presenting their crops to Hitler in traditional garb was also enchanting. Here is this man rising to power, bringing a message of hope and given homage to the past. People of Germany were in need of food and seeing this bounty would have look seductive and promising. I was also found myself admiring the beautiful cloths and heritage they represented. They looked festive, special and symbolic of better times. The farmers made their way to the German motorcade. The traditional German got to shake hands with a modern progressive. Eager on-lookers were seen climbing up on ledges to get a better look. The visuals so far in this film present the audience with a curious wonder. Who is this man and what is all the fuss about? If I had been viewing this in a small town after only hearing rumors...

...in the privacy of our homes, can be used to tear people apart or hurt someone; it can be full of bitterness and hate; yet it can also be used to express love, admiration, offer hope, and inspire others. Communication and our relationships with others are completely connected. It is impossible to have a relationship with someone without speaking to them. It involves every aspect of our everyday contact with others. Communication involves both verbal and non-verbal expressions of our thoughts, feelings and ideas to others. Our verbal communication is done through words, sending messages on what we think or feel in certain situations. Our non-verbal communication also known as paralanguage is embedded through your gestures, in the clothes we wear, the posture you present, your attitudes or facial expressions. It may be your silence, or your gentle touch. Paralanguage is more universal than verbal communication. This is the part of our communication that helps prevent ineffective communication, unlike a telephone call or a letter in that; it is harder to tell a lie or to hide a facial expression when face-to-face. It has been suggested that nearly 70% of what we communicate with others is through our non-verbal/paralanguage messages (O’Neil, 2009). Therefore, non-verbal/paralanguage messages are often far more important in communication than what is actually being said. Emotions such as anger,...

...before heading into combat. These speeches may have called upon the courage of the troops, the common cause which they were fighting for, or their previous accomplishments to inspire them to fight for their goals. More often than not, these speeches would be similar to each other, if not in content, then in the fact that they were meant to inspire the various armies. Two famous speeches, are that of Catiline in 62B.C.E., and that of Eisenhower, prior to the Normandy Invasion in 1944. Despite differing in many qualities, including very much the content of the speeches, both drew on common ideas which all armies hold true. While both Catiline’s “To His Army Before His Defeat in Battle” and Eisenhower’s “Message to Invasion Troops” appealed to his troops by using a central message of victory, showing the purposely battle, and using a tone which praised the men partaking, Catiline’s speech was more persuasive in many ways Both Catiline and Eisenhower preach victory to their troops in a...
