A Narrative About An Aa Meeting

Yesterday I attended my first ever AA meeting and it kind of blew me away. I’ll be honest, I was extremely nervous in preparation for this meeting. I was afraid I was going to be seen as an intruder, that people would know right away I was not one of them. I was apprehensive about who I might see there, wondered if it was safe to go alone. But from the moment I walked into the building, I had my preconceived notions tossed out the door. Right away I was struck by two things, the age gaps between members, and ratio of men and women. In my head I figured it would be mostly older men. I was wrong. There were people ranging from probably late 70’s to a few who didn’t even look old enough to drink. And the mix of men and women astounded me. I’d say the ratio was just about 50/50. But what probably threw me for the biggest loop was the differences in appearance. Again, my ignorance had led me to believe that the average alcoholic was an older man with tattoos and a …show more content…
It was such a simple and honest confession and he received an empathetic round of applause. At that moment I just wanted to go over to him and ask how I can help and I knew that this is why I’m studying this field. I learned so much in such a short period of time and I confirmed that this is the career field I need to be in. I’m honestly very grateful to have had this experience. It opened my eyes to whole world I was completely naïve too. Having this experience will allow me to give first-hand accounts to clients about what it will be like when they attend. It has allowed me even more compassion for people struggling with this disease. It has shown me that these people are truly powerless against their addiction and they will need unyielding support to survive. I hope to be that support someday

How Health Tv Shows Affect People's Health Attitude

...Journal of Health Communication, 13:667–680, 2008 Copyright # Taylor & Francis Group, LLC ISSN: 1081-0730 print/1087-0415 online DOI: 10.1080/10810730802412248 Interrupting a Narrative Transportation Experience: Program Placement Effects on Responses to Antismoking Advertising SARAH DURKIN AND MELANIE WAKEFIELD Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer, The Cancer Council Victoria, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia It is thought that ‘‘transportation’’—absorption into the narrative flow of a story— may play a role in influencing resistance to persuasion. We hypothesized that advertising that disrupts the experience of narrative transportation may be adversely appraised by audiences. This study aimed to explore the influence of two types of television programs: narratives (dramas, comedies, and soap operas) versus nonnarratives (light entertainment, sports, documentaries, and news), on smokers’ reactions to antismoking advertisements. In preexposure interviews, daily smokers (n ¼ 779) were asked to watch a particular television program they usually watched. Postexposure interviews were conducted within 3 days of exposure. Results indicated that placing an antismoking ad within a program in which the viewer is focused on the narrative flow of a story may lead to reduced immediate cognitive and emotional impact of the ad and reduced intentions to quit, especially among those for whom the ad is most relevant, such as those preparing to quit smoking. Placing antismoking advertising...

...MALAYSIAN CODE OF CORPORATE GOVERNANCE The need for a Code was inspired in part by a desire for the private sector to initiate and lead a review and to establish reforms of standards of corporate governance at a micro level. This is based on the belief that in some aspects, self-regulation is preferable and the standards developed by those involved may be more acceptable and thus more enduring. 1.3 The Code essentially aims to set out principles and best practices on structures and processes that companies may use in their operations towards achieving the optimal governance framework. These structures and processes exist at a micro-level which include issues such as the composition of the board, procedures for recruiting new directors, remuneration of directors, the use of board committees, their mandates and their activities. 1.4 The significance of the Code is that it allows for a more constructive and flexible response to raise standards in corporate governance as opposed to the more black and white response engendered by statute or regulation. It is in recognition of the fact that there are aspects of corporate governance where statutory regulation, is necessary and others where self-regulation, complemented by market regulation is more appropriate. 1.5 The impact the Code will have in raising standards of corporate governance can be seen from the experiences of other jurisdictions. To quote the Hampel Committee1, “... it is generally accepted that implementation...
