...i woukd really appreciate it if you guys woulkd only show the hatchet on here thank you so ,uchBrian Robeson, a thirteen-year-old boy from New York City, is the only passenger on a small plane headed toward the oil fields of Canada. We've all been there, right? Oh, not right. Brian is on his way to spend the summer with his father, and he's feeling totally bummed about his parents' recent divorce. Brian doesn't have much time to dwell on his unhappy family situation, though, because the pilot—the only other person on the plane—suddenly suffers a heart attack and dies. Holy game-changer, Batman. Through an amazing combination of good luck, clear thinking, and readerly suspension of disbelief, Brian manages to crash-land the plane into a lake and escape with nothing more than some bruises. Still strapped onto his belt is the hatchet his mother had given him before he boarded the plane. Brian realizes he needs to find food and shelter so he can last until he's rescued. It's just like Survivor… but real and totally terrifying. With his trusty hatchet at his side, Brian finds some berries, constructs a shelter of sorts out of some tree branches and a cave (this kid was definitely a Boy Scout), and meets a bear in the woods. Woven throughout the narrative are Brian's thoughts and memories of his family, and the "secret" which led to his parents' divorce—his mother had been involved with another man before the breakup. As the days pass, Brian is attacked by a porcupine, learns...

...Conflict of The Lottery Shirley Jackson’s short story, “The Lottery”, portrays the old, barbaric practices of culture. The story was truly horrifying and shocked many readers. The piece reflected one of the most horrible practices of human history that traces back to the beginning of mankind. Winning a lottery is usually a great accomplishment, in this story it is completely opposite. The story began with a beautiful setting “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green” (247). As the story begins to develop the story becomes more and more strange. When Mr. Summers arrives and enters the town square “The villagers kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool, and when Mr. Summers said, "Some of you fellows want to give me a hand?" there was a hesitation before two men” (247). Tessie Hutchinson had forgotten that the lottery was being held that day and arrived late and joined her family in the front. The townspeople humouredly welcomed her into the lottery. The lottery had begun and Mr. Summers addressed the crowd "Now, I'll read the names--heads of families first--and the men come up and take a paper out of the box. Keep the paper folded in your hand without looking at it until everyone has had a turn. Everything clear?" (248). The lottery began and the townspeople became nervous, “The people had done it so many times that they only half...

...spectators thoughts, needing nothing more to hand than a pen and paper! Some people think that the center tear (and billet work in general) is somewhat antiquated and old fashioned, but I can assure you that with the right handling, you can create extremely powerful mind reading effects. Mentalism godfather Tony Corinda says of the center tear in his iconic book, 13 Steps to Mentalism: “The center tear is perhaps my most celebrated method of all those used in the art of mentalism.” So, lets get on with learning how to do a center tear. Though first, a quick word of warning. There are literally dozens of methods and presentations based on the center tear. I use the one that makes most sense to me – it’s loosely based on one used by Corinda. How to do a center tear You will need: - One small piece of paper (around 4×4 inches) – not see through or too thick. - One pencil (or pen) - One spectator with a mind worth reading (rare) - One ashtray (not essential) 1. Take the square of paper and explain you want them to write the name of someone close to them, that you do not know. 2. Draw a line just below the center middle of the paper, just so they know where to write. Do this casually and as you explain step 1. 3. As they write, look away. Explain that when they are done, you want them to fold the paper in half, and then half again. 4. When they are done, turn back, and take the folded paper (or ‘billet’) from them, asking if they are happy that you can’t...

...As curator of the museum I have been asked to develop an interactive timeline based on one art medium to improve the content of the museum website. I have chosen to do a time line based on paintings from the Chinese. I chose to do nature and landscape art work. The first art piece is known as Chinese landscape artist from the 11th century developed the Old Tree, Level Distance hand scroll using ink and color on silk which is traditional to the Chinese style. The mountains are done with a single line which gives the impression of distance. The focal point of the trees contains the artists patterned brushwork which provides the image with a textured look. The environment of the landscape is designed with a look of moisture formed with the dark and light contrast. Symbolically, the painting is that of a saddened emotion almost as saying goodbye to something. A.D. 1080 Northern Song Dynasty Old Trees, Level Distance Guo Xi Handscroll; ink and color on silk The Metropolitan Museum of Art [pic] The second art piece that I looked at was believed to be created by Qu Ding this hand scroll was created on silk with ink and pale colors during the 11th century of the North Song Dynasty. The hand scroll was created during a period when the images are meant to depict creation. Viewing the picture you connect with the nature as if present in the drawing, experiencing the textures that are created by the strokes and shadows that are created by the ink and pale colors used by the...

...because the way light travels through the hole is very similar to the way light travels through the eye. The pupil, the small black area in the center of the eye, acts similarly to the pinhole. It is small compared to the big things in the world you are looking at. The retina, the back part of the eye where special cells sense light and send signals to the brain via nerves, acts similarly to the screen in the camera. II. Pinhole Magnifier Materials: 20 Pinhole magnifiers (index card with a small hole punched in aluminum foil inserts) 20 Pieces of newspaper (in an envelope) A pinhole in an index card can act like a magnifying glass, helping your eye focus on an object that is very close to you. However, by limiting the amount of light that reaches your eye from the object, the pinhole also makes the object appear dimmer. Pass out a pinhole magnifier (index cards with a small hole punched in aluminum foil inserts) and piece of newspaper to each student. Use the pinhole magnifier to look at the text of the newspaper and notice that it appears larger. Now try making a pinhole magnifier with your fingers like this: [pic] The pinhole magnifier works on a very simple principle: The closer you get to an object, the bigger it looks to you. This is because the closer you are to the object, the larger the image the object forms on your retina. Unfortunately, however, there is a limit to this. If you get too close to the object, your eye is not able to bend some of...

...James Daichendt Museum Paper # 1 Robert Duncan: Wallpaper Design 1952-1954 Art is the expression of creative skill and imagination. As I am preparing to finish this course I walk away with a greater appreciation for the art world. Art is all around, and we can all create majestic pieces we just need to express our inner most creative skill. As I visited the Art museums this semester my favorite of the two was the Pasadena Museum of California Art. The parking structure for the museum really sets up the individual for a treat! When I parked my car I spent about a half hour walking through the structure admiring all of the murals on the wall. My roommate actually accompanied me and we took a lot of pictures. It was really neat! What I love about this art museum is that you can really see the culture, of the art. The inside is an elegant white and the pieces featured are amazing. One piece in particular really stuck out to me. Robert Duncan made the piece, Wallpaper Design, in 1952-1954. While I was in the museum I read a little about Robert Duncan’s background, Interestingly enough, Robert Duncan was an American Poet, who traveled nation wide, before settling in San Francisco where he wrote his best book, “The opening of the field.” During his college years at Berkeley, Duncan was captivated by surreal art. Painter friends inspired him, to continue to make artwork using pencil, pen, and crayon. He also frequently illustrated his own books. The piece Wallpaper Design is a...

...If the paper is not square, fold one corner across to make a large triangle. Cut off the excess paper. Fold the triangle in half to make a smaller triangle. Place the triangle on a flat surface. The edge that was cut off needs to be facing away from you and the point on the opposite end towards you. Fold the triangle into thirds. Fold the right side of the triangle towards the right so the fold lines up directly at the bottom point. Fold the left side over the right side. Try to get all of the folds to line up so the snowflake is as symmetrical as possible. It should look like the head of a fox. Flip your folded paper over so you’re looking at the back. Cut off the top at an angle. Keep the paper folded. Use the scissors to cut our small triangles and other shapes. Be careful not to cut all the way across or completely up the spin, otherwise the snowflake turns into multiple pieces. Compare snowflakes. Are any two exactly...

...Apprentice – Paul Dukas The Sorcerer’s Apprentice written by French composer, Paul Dukas, is a piece of programme music written in 1897. Originally written as a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, this is one of his most famous poems (see appendix 1). It is the recommendation of this paper that this work is a suitable choice for inclusion in the “Express it with Music!” concert for Vision Australia. This is evident in Dukas’ manipulation of the elements of music, mainly Duration, Expressive Elements and Timbre, in relation to the stimulus above and demonstrates how Dukas has represented the stimulus in his work and created a piece of programme music suitable for the concert. Duration is an element of music that talks about the,...

...Winters is a painter who was born in New York City in 1949. Terry winters went to the high school of art and design and Pratt institute. Over the years as a painter he became a draughtsman, and a print maker. His approach within his work was to address the concept of spatiality, and the concept of creating abstract art. While observing Terry winters exhibit what I liked the most is the positive, and negative approach he put into his pieces. Positive and negatives creates more elements, volume, and shapes into the piece. He dips and dabs into just about everything including architecture, computer sciences, and natural sciences. My Favorite pieces were the Graphic Primitives, Furrows, and the Metal virus. In these three pieces he used black, white, and grey colors that created a variety of triangles, circles, spheres, diamond shapes and many more....
