...Latoya Griffin ENG 125 Instructor Anna Morrison May 28, 2014 The Pool Players The poem “The pool players” outlines the actual reality in which different youth from any diverse tends to face after leaving school. The poems’ content is systematically in a order simply because it opens up with portraying the ultimate scene of seven boys who surrounded a pool hall which was named the Golden Shovel. This line exposes the actual scene which the play had represented certain small gang who were in need of luck in order to achieve certain goal in their lives. Also the content of the play seemingly interested as result of implication whereby it implies the youngness of the players (Brooks, 1959). The poem`s content also exposes the certain illegal activities which were practiced by the boys discussed. What interested me are narrator words when exposing the facts by use of secret word “Lurk late” which shows that, a certain activities were taking place in the dark. The identification shows that, too much exposure to darkness makes somebody to be what he or she ought to be. The narrator uses the word “strike straight” showing that, the boys where seemingly trying to do something menacing. Perhaps, they committed crimes, rapes and murder as well since they were all undergoing through a rite of passage in their development (Brooks, 1959). The form of the poem “the pool players” was identified to have been determined by Colloquial rhythm (Haikus type of poem) the narrator tried...

...NBA is currently in the midst of a work stoppage that is threatening the entire 2011-2012 NBA season. This work stoppage has been all over the news in the sports world and has focused criticism on both the players and owners. The owners are seen as being greedy and playing the role of billionaires simply trying to maximize their profit, and the players are seen as being millionaires who are equally greedy and only care about making money. The news and players will have you believe that it is an equal battle, where it is just a matter of the sides meeting in the middle. The truth is that the owners will not meet in the middle because they feel they have the upper hand. These men have in the hundreds of millions of dollars, and are proven business men. The truth is that the majority of the players do not have college degrees, and the owners do not feel they have to bend to them. The only way to fix this is by improving the player’s education. An extra year of college will give players a greater foundation for their education, and make it easier to pursue degrees part time. The NBA should increase its draft age requirement to two years of college education in an effort to improve both on and off court skills for incoming players. Before the 2006 rule change, that stated players must be one year out of high school before being eligible for the draft, the NBA’s biggest stars were coming straight from high school. Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, LeBron James, and many more of the NBAs most...

...Evaluating Football Players Essay by D. Cummings It may seem overly simplified and obvious to state that player evaluation is critical in generating success and wins on the football field. A coach may have the greatest “system” and an amazing game plan laid out but, without the right players in the right positions the only thing a coach will collect are losses. This is true of coaching recreational and youth football through the professional ranks. Player evaluation is not only about addressing the physical skills needed for specific positions but, it is also about plugging in the right players who posses the temperament and character to lead the team in all critical situations on the field. Coach Trimble has a very encompassing player evaluation process that fits his program and situation. His evaluation cycle is a constant year round model that allows him to track his players over long periods of time. Even with that being the case, many of his methods can be translated to youth football, middle school/ junior high school , and smaller high school programs. Coach Trimble uses off season conditioning routines, preseason, practice, and game situations to evaluate his players as well as his players evaluating themselves to make sure they are properly used on the field. Many of these evaluation techniques can be used, with some adjustments, just as effectively at lower levels of competition as they are for larger programs like the one at Jenks High School. ...

...God grant me wisdom, to tell a strike from a ball, to know where to throw and never to fall. Keep me always in the base line, running straight and true and I'll look for your sign, to stretch one into two. God give me vision, to see every pitch, so if a player needs help, then I will see which. Let me always hustle, so I'll be at my best and take pride in myself, in sports and the rest. God be my strength, when I throw the ball when I'm far from home plate, or against a wall. So I never miss a base, please guide my feet, bring me home safely, so my job is complete. When I help younger players, let me always give praise, so they'll see you in me, in all of my ways. God please guide our coach, to be fair and smart, to teach us to be good, let it come from his heart. Let me take a loss, just as well as a win, to do any less, is surely a sin. As long as I can play, let me make my parents proud, as proud as I am, when they yell MY name out loud. However my games end, let me always have fun and if Heaven has All Stars, I want to be one. When my games here are over and my seasons are done, let me play on your team. just like your son. Amen. I was given this for my birthday and it really inspires me to get out there and play the sport that i love, it is an inspiring peice of...

...Managements Role in Players Being Violent Jennifer Grant BUS/ December 3, 2012 Dr. David Snow Managements Role in Players Being Violent When sports first started up they were meant to be something fun, to relieve stress, and teach youth about working hard, time management, teamwork, and to build character (Champion, Ruddell, & Thornton, 2012). Over the years, sports have gotten more and more competitive. Sports should have a positive impact on our community and serve as entertainment. If entertainment to our society is violence and causing harm to others then we are living in a messed up world. Management plays a major role in this violence by either being to tranquil in how they handle violence or even if they are encouraging the violence. When I was growing up the sports I participated in taught me about sportsmanship, character, being a good loser and winner, showing respect to others, teamwork, hard work, time management, social skills and more. My coaches played a big part in that, they made sure that we played fairly, and always played with sportsmanship. The coaches that I played under were great role models and winning did not mean anything if we didn’t do it the right way. In high school, we made it to the final four twice, won district all four years, were regional runner-ups twice and won regionals twice. We were very successful and at no point was violence being encouraged, and if there was any bad sportsmanship or violence...

...A Good Team Player Stakeholders Steven, Assistant Department Manager- Accounts Payable Kristin, Newly appointed supervisor of Accounts Payable Department Other managers and employees at the Accounts Payable Department Main Problem: Should Steven name the names of the people who he thought are not acting on the interest of the companies? Sub-Problem: Do you think Steven intentionally hinted Kristin regarding this issue? Conclusion: Being a leader does not mean getting the upper hand, but it means that one should lower his/her hand, stretch it out so that other can reach it and together they can accomplish what it needs to be done. It is also not wise for Kirsten to force Steven to name those people as she is depriving them fairness in judgment. Team work lies on the attitude of the leaders. It is them who can make or break the outlook of the department thus it is them who can model what “acting on the best interest of the company” would mean. A Case Study Prepared by China Chua Background of the Case: Kristin is forcing Steven to spill the beans on who are the employees that are not acting on the best interests of the company, based on what he had told her earlier on their first meeting. Recommendation: No, he should not give her the names, instead he should clarify to Kirsten that what he said earlier was a mere comment/opinion and it meant no harm to her or his team mates. He should be be a team player To dwell into the situation, do I really...

...The Superstar Effect: NBA Players and Team Influence I. Introduction Individual influence in a group setting has been studied among numerous academic fields for decades. In particular, productivity is often seen as a positive externality, in which the efficiency of a single individual in certain environments may others to also be more efficient, leading to better performance of the overall group [1]. This increase in productivity can be observed in a variety of different environments, including but not limited to the work office, education, and even in a domestic setting. Specifically in sports teams, this phenomenon is coined “the superstar effect”. In the past, there has been much debate regarding the actual impact of the superstar effect. These studies bring up many important issues that we will address before proceeding with our work. Among these questions are: Who qualifies as a superstar? How do we define a player to be “productive”? Under what metrics will we look at to determine the supposed effect of these players? All of these are valid points that we must carefully define to progress with our experimentation. II. Background and Data Our first and foremost question is what we base our data and work on: how do we define a superstar? Past work shows numerous ways to address this topic. One common way to determine a superstar is to refer to the number of times he or she has made an All-Pro team, or a player who has played in the NBA All-Star...

...Who is the best football player in the world now? I am a football fans. I cost much share time in watching football match. I and other football fans meet a question which is easy on the surface, but difficult actually. This question puzzle all the football fans—— who is the best football player in the world now? The answer comes from two famous football players: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. In my opinion, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are all excellent football players. They all have masterly football technique and high support. Thousands of football fans from the whole world support them. But I pay more attention on their dissimilarity rather than who is the best one. I think they have much different from each other. It is very interesting to discuss their dissimilarity. First, their position in field is different. Cristiano Ronaldo is a wing forward. The job for a wing forward is creating more chances for the centre forward, shooting from long distance and cutting back for centre. On the other hand, Lionel Messi is a second striker. The job for a second striker is organizing the attack for the whole team, helping the centre forward to get goal and attracting the defend players. Second, their way to get a goal is different. Cristiano Ronaldo is a versatile player. He can use many means to get a goal, such as shooting from long distance, free kick and header. In comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi just have simplex way to get a goal. His way is shooting from close...

...Padgett Colorado Technical University ENGL101-1301B-34: Composition and Critical Thinking Professor Mark Watson March 25, 2013 Transportable MP3 players started showing up in the 1990s and have come a long way like all electronics have. The MP3 players came around because of having the ability to make the standard audio file able to be compressed into a smaller file with hardly any loss to the sound quality which helped the electronic industry launch this new ability of music enjoyment. The first businesses to take control of this new industry were Apple and Microsoft. Apple introduced the portable media player known as the IPod, a little while after Microsoft decided to enter the playing field with their portable media player known as the Zune. These two products are both popular media player and offers identical features; on the other hand they are very different in their own ways. The discussion of synchronization of software, features, and ease of use will allow us to determine which one the consumer would like better. Within this essay the Apple and Microsoft’s media player will be described in a short detail and then my opinion will be mentioned and explained why that choice was chosen. An important thing that you might look into when deciding on what media player to choose is the ease of use. The Apple media player device features an easy user interface which they call the click wheel. The click wheel is the main function of the device, it allow the user to use their...

...Ethics Case: "A Good Team Player" 1) Describe the factual situation Steven, a staff accountant in the accounts payable section, is confident that he knows the “ins” and “outs” of the bureaucratic organization he works in. Kristin, a new manager of accounts payable, no non-sense type of manager, Kristin was experienced and determined to perform her new assignment with the same vigor that had brought her so much success throughout her career. Steven believes people seem to gain promotions and have the opportunity to work overtime based on who likes them rather than the quality of their work. As a result, Steven who is dissatisfied with what he senses are political machinations that have influenced managerial decision making within his firm, suggests to Kristin that things would be better if the political could be stopped. Kristin uses the power of her new position to get Steven to give her the names of the bad team players or else she will start to think he is part of the problem. Steven, stunned, cannot think of a way to respond. 2) Identify the possible courses of action. There are three possible courses of action that I can take away from this situation. One situation involves Steven and the company, and one that involves Steven only. 1. Steven would be to respond Kristin's demands and give her the names of the bad team players. By doing this, it would benefit himself in the long run and will allow the company to better their work force. 2. Steven...

...Mp3 Players In the Classroom By: Angel Larson, Jessica Gallo, Ashley Dorzok and Michael McClanathan We questioned if MP3 players should be available to students at Moraine Park Technical College. If so, would they improve productivity and student morale? Since many students already use their MP3 players when doing homework and/or listening to reading material for school, we believe the chances for MP3 players being used will continue to grow. Should college students at Moraine Park Technical College be awarded a MP3/iPod player to use throughout their educational career? Would having the ability to download audio books, learning materials, and/or podcasts enhance students’ learning, or become a distraction and hinder it? The purpose of our research is to decide if MP3 Players should be available to Moraine Park Students and whether it will improve productivity and student morale. Variables used will include resources and a survey given to our demographic. Our hypothesis is that productivity will increase greatly if iPod’s/MP3 Players were provided to students at Moraine Park Technical Colleges. These devices can be used to store books, lecture notes, and class videos. They are portable; making it easy to carry in a backpack, purse and often times, pockets. Students and Instructors can take advantage of these devices by uploading appropriate lesson plans and study guides to their MP3 players. While music and audio books enhance concentration, we believe...
