...multi-purposes but connects as one. By having a consumer society it would unquestionable mean that advertising will posses negative aspects that cause manipulative and persuasive, therefore a false consciousness society is established, this is quite visible throughout history of Advertisement. However Advertisement can also influence positive attributes, depending on how an advertisement is understood. Essay: Advertising is often referred as a “mediated form of communication” (Richard and Cullen) usually from a recognisable source that manipulates as it gains control over the viewer to take a particular action in order to be satisfied whether it is materialistic or informational. In the article “Distorted Mirror” by W.Pollay, he suggests that advertising is nothing but pervasiveness and leads to consequences in our society. As he states “Perhaps the least important aspect of advertising’s significance in society is its role in influencing specific consumer choices about purchasing products”. Despite Advertisement has always been contributing to the economy largely, it should be understood that it also causes social consequences within the society as it commercialises many aspects. Sometimes Advertisement is understood as a basic conception where many just...

...people with images and messages, which may even lead to the use of stereotyping in order to reach to a wider array of audience. For example, adverts that are solely directed for the teenage audience persuade them that purchasing a specific product makes them “fit in” with other teenagers or their role models. A comparison of advertisements that are aims at men and women show that advertisers are still using the standard gender role to advertise for their products which is causing a lot of stereotyping and biases to be seen. In order to understand stereotypes and gender bias found in the advertisements, it is first imperative to understand what stereotyping is and how it is implemented into advertisements. Stereotyping is defined as a thought that can be adopted from specific types of individuals or ways of doing things, however, that certain belief may or may not be an accurate reflection of reality. Stereotyping fits in with other types of inter group attitudes. Stereotyping, discrimination, and prejudice are comprehended to be related but are still different concepts. Stereotyping is though more as rational components of an individual since it is a reflection god expectations and beliefs about the characteristics of members of groups that is supposed as different from one’s own. Stereotyping can lead to racial prejudice when people emotionally react to the name of a group, attribute characteristics to the members of that group, and then evaluate those characteristics. There...

...As the proverb goes there is no second chance at making a good first impression. If an advertisement, regardless offline or online, cannot catch your attention within seconds they are considered failed. An advertisement with good content spreads like a virus. Therefore, the idea of advertisement has to be really out of the box to stand out of the crowd. The Evian advertising campaigns are an excellent example of this. Evian is a brand of luxury mineral water owned by Danone Group. Evian is the most famous mineral water in the French market and also in the rest of the world. One of the reasons Evian’s brand is so famous and has this premium status is due to their advertising strategy. The advertisers of Evian want to present their water can keep adults young at heart so they associating their ads with baby. History of its brand being connected with babies started in France in 1935 by Laurent Houel, global brand director of Evian. In 1935, Evian was marketed as being the water mothers should use in powdered milk solutions for babies. In 2009, this campaign was reborn in a slightly different. Evian launched the advertisement campaign "Roller Babies" made by BETC. This campaign stages a group of babies roller skating. Their slogan is “Live young”. This unique idea appeals a great amount of people to view their advertisement. ...Plastic Does Not Belong in the Sea “For whatever we lose (like a you or a me), it’s always ourself we find in the sea” this is a beautiful phrase E. E. Cummings once said. The ocean is vital for the environment. It’s well known to be one of the most important natural resources of earth. At the same time, it’s very much affected with pollution and trash. The photograph “Polluted Sushis” shows three sushis placed in a white platter, they are wrapped around plastic in place of the usual seaweed. This image leads to an understanding that nothing goes by without a consequence. The message that is being sent by this image is powerful in the sense of saying that what we throw into the ocean, will eventually come back. The JWT advertisement agency in charge of the add “Polluted Sushis” does a great job using ethos, pathos, and logos to help effectively persuade the audience to stop littering the sea. The use of pro environmental ads nowadays is quite usual. Some of them are very harsh and direct, they go straight to the point and leave no space to wonder. Nevertheless, there are some ads which are more subtle with their message. They suggest the problem in a more creative way giving the viewer the possibility to reflect upon their add. I find this mechanism much more effective than the first one because it gives a way to internalize the problem shown. Precisely, this is what happens with “Polluted Sushis”. It achieves that people are most likely to perceive the possibility of what is...

...The article by Juliet Schor called Selling to Children: The Marketing of Cool concerns the topic of a wide-spreading tendency in advertising to appeal to children. The central issue under exploration is the problem that children are regarded by marketers as a valuable audience for influence, which finds reflection in using the concept of coolness to impose impact on children. The author expresses a concern in regards to advertisement instilling the idea of being cool on children and provoking them to behave in the way that marketers would like to. This concern also has to do with attitude and perception of parents. To support the idea, the author provides numerous examples of advertisements as well as appeals emotionally to parents who have...

...and the relationship it has to consumption and our everyday lifestyles. The research will impact frequent shoppers, couscous buyers and young people that are the most easily persuaded with brand preference and products. The implications I can draw from this research is the team conducting the study wants to learn more about buying patterns and the association it has with peoples personal values. In the study, I was asked about my self esteem, stereotypes on materialism, affection and intimacy, views on shoplifting and how I basically view myself as a young adult in this fast passed consumer driven world. I was given a set of questions as a survey and my answer choices ranged from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree”. Overall my reflection on the study was a bit surprised but at the same time glad these questions were asked. I was unsure how to feel about the variety of questions. One set would be asking about intimacy and sexual history, while the next set is my views on materialism and shoplifting. The correlation between the two was hard to understand at first, but if there is a strong relationship between the two this would be the way to find out. From the researcher’s perspective, I think they were trying to asses what really drives consumer behavior and what triggers the intensity or lack of it. Is it based on ones morals? What we do in our spare time? How confident are you? How we were raised? All these questions come in to play when trying to understand what really...

...Marketing Communications April 6, 2014 I selected to write my article about Evian when I came across their advertisement in Adweek.com. The article caught my attention because it was featured as Adweek’s ad of the day titled “Evian Spins a Familiar Web with a Dancing Baby Spider-Man BETC gets heroic in the latest outing”. The title grabbed my attention and I was curious to read the article and of course watch the YouTube video. I have always been a fan of the Evian commercials and their use of Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) babies coming together in a group to swim, dance, roller skate, etc. and therefore I was curious to learn more. I’m sure most people have the same reaction as I do when I see a cute baby, but a cute one year old performing in the commercials is even better. I hadn’t seen The Amazing Spider Man 2 commercial but after viewing the YouTube video, I was even more in love with Evian’s marketing by using the CGI babies, however, I do agree with the author Emma Bazilian in that the Spider Man 2 commercial is very similar to Evian’s “Baby & Me” commercial just different characters. “Baby & Me” starts when pedestrians walk by a man dancing in front of a mirror to the song “Here Comes the Hotstepper” except his reflection is not of him as an adult but as a baby. All the other pedestrians that come to observe also see their reflection when they were a child and they all join in on the party. Since music is universal and it’s a great way to bring...

...Name Professor’s name Course number Date Gender Stereotypes in Media The mass media plays a significant role in the contemporary society. It provides broadcast information at a fast race and gives entertainment to audiences from diverse social backgrounds. Mass media is made up of press, books, magazines, radio, television, and internet. The internet is the most embraced medium in the contemporary society where digital technology dominates. Nevertheless, TV also has a wide influence in the society. By creating and conveying certain type of information to the audience, media can manipulate the attitudes and opinions of people. In this study, we intend to discuss problems associated to media influence through an investigative study of its commercial structure. The study also tries to specify gender stereotypes as used in persuasive advertising technique. Humans organize their knowledge about the world sorting and simplifying the information they receive (Gu 291). They tend to establish cognitive schemes that are certain representations of reality portraying its basic elements and features (Everett 387). The schemes developed by humans are responsible for the definition of our perception and view of the world. They have significant influence our social understanding, situation, anticipation and emotional control. The most common type of these schemes used for social orientation in our environment is stereotypes (Darling 153). The stereotypes scheme represents the opinions and perceptions...

...career. These stereotypes are chosen to be labeled upon the teenagers today because there are some aspects in both of these stereotype’s that are true and they are easily taken and labeled onto them. 2. The shows “Dawson’s Creek” and “Beverley Hills, 90210” were popular but I don’t think they were popular because they were a reflection of teen life. I feel like they were popular because it was the life that many teenagers want to have. They want to have fun every day and do crazy things with hardly any consequence. Teenagers now aren’t as active as they are portrayed in the TV shows. They would much rather stay home and watch what is going on in other peoples fun lives then try and do the same thing as they see on TV. These TV shows are not a mirror to my live because I am not as interested in the thing that they are doing and that is the same for lots of other teenagers just like me. 3. I believe that there are many things in the “Merchants of Cool” that line up with teenagers today and I think that some aspects of sex in media are true and some are not. Some teenagers want that because it attracts them and if they see it in an advertisement they will be drawn to it. However, there are also many teenagers that feel that the focus on sex...
