One appeal using pathos is made in the middle of the eighth page. The author compares the planting of trees for Hantz Farm to a prison labor scandal from whole foods. For readers of the article, they would connect the situation in two ways: shadowing and betrayal. Starting with shadowing, Salazar states that people were donating physical labors “with the cover of creating a green space”. Readers would feel that they had personally been tricked by these corporations into providing a service with little to no compensation, even if they hadn’t provided their time.
