A Separate Peace
By John Knowles

#2. What does my enemy mean?
“I never killed anybody and I never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Because my war ended before I ever put on a uniform. I was on active duty all my time at school; I killed there. Only Phineas never was afraid, only Phineas never hated anyone.”

At the very end of the book, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Gene Forrester mentioned that he killed his enemy at Devon, before the war. An enemy, according to Gene is someone or something that they have to destroy in their personal war. For Gene, his enemy was his inner self.

Gene Forrester had an inner devil that was jealous of Finny because Finny was born with good talents. His physical abilities and his oral talents to get away from troubles were outstanding. “He probably thought anything you were good at came without effort. He didn’t know yet that he was unique” (Knowles 58). When Gene realized this, he became jealous and wanted to kill Finny. However, after he pushed Finny off the tree, Gene realized that Finny wasn’t his rival. Therefore, Gene “killed” his enemy, the jealousy inside him by pushing Finny off the tree.

Another enemy of Gene was resentment towards Finny. Gene didn’t like how Finny had lots of freedom and his special way of thinking. Because of this hatred, he pushed Finny off the tree. “Of course you didn’t do it. You damn fool. Sit down, you damn fool (Knowles 70). However, when Finny denies the fact that Gene pushed him off the tree, Gene realizes that Finny is innocent and doesn’t have enemy. After Gene realizes that Finny adjusts the whole world to please himself, Gene lies that he wasn’t the one who pushed Finny and tries to become a part of Finny. Therefore, Gene “killed” his resentment towards Finny while he pushed Finny off the tree.

Gene’s only enemy was just himself, his jealousy and resentment towards Finny. However, when Gene pushes Finny off that tree, Gene destroyed his enemy and won his personal war.

A Separate Peace

...A Separate Peace In the 1940’s, World War II had a huge impact on the everyday lives of Americans. Many people had to sacrifice money, supplies, food and even lives to contribute to the war effort. However, the characters in John Knowles’ “A Separate Peace” appear to be sheltered from the influences of the international conflicts as a result of attending an all-boys boarding school. The novel focuses on the friendship between Finny and Gene, two friends who bonded during the carefree summer sessions at the Devon School. When the winter approaches, the students find themselves having to deal with stricter administration and rules. The new order and increasing impact of the war causes the students to stress and worry. In an effort to relieve the misery, Finny decides to organize a winter carnival for the pupils. Although the festivities of the winter carnival suggest that the boys have been successful in creating a separate peace, Knowles’ use of war imagery in describing the setting, prizes, and the boy’s behavior suggests that this peace is illusory. Although the setting of the carnival seems serene at first, a closer look at the descriptive language reveals that the Devon school is in a war-like state. The brutal winter causes the students to have a depressing view of their school life. The despair that the cold weather has brought with it causes Gene to loathe winter, he compares it to a “corrupt…conqueror” who’s presence has “destroyed everything”. In spite of getting ready...

A Separate Peace

...A Separate Peace is a novel by John Knowles that delves into the world of youth and tells a tragic tale of happiness, jealousy, family, and overall the progression of a friendship. I examined the theme of envy and how it drives the Knowles’ characters. Phineas and Gene are analyzed in greater detail so that we can get a better understanding of these characters and what motivates them. Finally I conducted a psychological examination of the characters and how others view them and how that affects the characters. Gene Forrester, a boy from the south who gets the chance to study at Devon an extremely prestigious academy. He doesn’t quite fit in at first until he meets his roommate Phineas or Finny for short. They become friends quite quickly and the reader sees that Gene is held back or suspicious of this overly friendly guy. This shows us the first glimpse into the character that is Gene and how he is not as open to new people. As the story progresses we learn that Gene switches from adoring Finny, to envying him and his ways of persuasion. In this quote Gene states how everybody loves Finny and how lucky he is to be his best friend. “Finny could shine with everyone, he attracted everyone he met. I was glad of that too. Naturally. He was my roommate and my best friend.” (32) Later on when the boys are invited to the Headmaster’s Tea Finny manages to weasel his way out of trouble with his charm and persuasion. “Phineas was going to get away with even this.” (20) Finny had...

John Knowles A Separate Peace

...world of a teenager is filled with complexity. A Separate Peace, written by John Knowles demonstrates how two teenage boys handle their inter-conflict and coming of age in their modern world during World War II. Finny is athletic, humorous, and represents the optimism and light of the situation, while Gene is fundamentally reserved, physically impressive, and portrays the dark, self-discriminating, and disturbed thoughts of an average teenage boy. Even though, the teens showed strength in both physical and mental aspects, Knowles use of symbolism and imagery help portray Finny as the weaker character. Gene and Phineas’ summer sessions at Devon were a time of freedom and peace. The teachers of Devon were lenient and Finny’s clever tongue allowed him to get away with anything. In the book, it was thought that the war was being fought to preserve the life they enjoyed. Teachers were more indulgent towards them than others, such as the seniors. Finny and Gene reminded them of what peace and life away from the destruction was like. Knowles creates a contrasting image of the summer joy and the tragic war zone. The war for the boys was a distant and almost laughable concept. However, the symbolic summer sessions of innocence and youth comes to an end with Phineas’ fall. Winter sessions began and were dark, disciplined, and filled with difficult work. It symbolized the burden of adulthood and the wartime. The imagery Knowles...
