“A Short story that reminds me of Mama”

Mama’s Empty Chair

A woman's daughter had asked the local minister to come and pray with her mother.

When the minister arrived, he found the woman lying in bed with her head propped up on two pillows.

An empty chair sat beside her bed.

The minister assumed that the woman had been informed of his visit.

'I guess you were expecting me, he said.

'No, who are you?' said the mother.

The minister told her his name and then remarked, 'I saw the empty chair and I figured you knew I was going to show up..'

'Oh yeah, the chair,' said the bedridden woman.

'Would you mind closing the door?'

Puzzled, the minister shut the door.

'I have never told anyone this, not even my daughter,' said the woman.

'But all of my life I have never known how to pray.

At church I used to hear the pastor talk about prayer, but it went right over my head.'

I abandoned any attempt at prayer, 'the old woman continued, 'until one day four years ago, my best friend said to me, ' Prayer is just a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus. Here is what I suggest.

'Sit down in a chair; place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith see Jesus on the chair.

It's not spooky because he promised,

'I will be with you always'.

'Then just speak to him in the same way you're doing with me right now.'

'So, I tried it and I've liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day.

I'm careful though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she'd either have a nervous breakdown or send me off to the funny farm.'

The minister was deeply moved by the story and encouraged the old woman to continue on the journey.

Then he prayed with her, anointed her with oil, and returned to the church.

Two nights later the daughter called to tell the minister that her mama had died that afternoon.

Did she die in peace?' he asked.

Yes, when I left the house about two o'clock, she called me over to her bedside, told me she loved me and kissed me on the cheek.

When I got back from the store an hour later, I found her.

But there was something strange about her death

Apparently, just before Mom died, she leaned over and rested her head on the chair beside the bed.

What do you make of that?'

The minister wiped a tear from his eye and said, 'I wish we could all go like that.'

Prayer is one of the best free gifts we receive.

I asked God for water, He gave me an ocean.

I asked God for a flower, He gave me a garden

I asked God for a friend, He gave me all of YOU...

If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it.

Happy moments, praise God.

Difficult moments, seek God.

Quiet moments, worship God.

Painful moments, trust God.

Every moment, thank God.

Comparison Of Everyday Use And A Worn Path

...“Everyday Use” and “A Worn Path” were both favorites of mine. I could relate to each in different, yet, some similar ways. Seeing mine, as well as my son’s, mother’s, and grandmother’s everyday life, past, present, and future in these stories. I, now with my son, as my mother was with me, both would walk the world over, climb any mountain, cross any sea, all in order to get what our child needs. This is just what the grandmother did in “A Worn Path” (Welty, 1940). We do without and will take on any hunger or struggle to make sure our children are taken care of, not hungry, are clothed, and are happy. This goal is always accomplished no matter the risk or challenge. These strengths were mainly seen in “A Worn Path” but also in mama’s protective...

Resort

...Good afternoon everybody in this class. My name is Tien. I have been living in PT city when I was born. Today, in my presentation, the purpose of my talk is comparing and contrast between 3 resorts in my hometown namely Novotel (4 star resort), Anantara and Sealink (5 star resorts). Nowadays, people go travel more and more popular. Choosing a quality resort is an important step. There are some similarities and differences between them. . I have devided this talk into 4 part. There are a number of points. I’d like to make: 1- Location 2- Facilities 3- Prices 4- Conclusion And if you have any question, please ask me.I’ll be happy to answer them at the end. I should only take about 5min of ur time.Let’s start by their location. All of their locations vary considerately. While Novotel is located near in the heart of Phan Thiet city, both of Sealink and Anantara is far from the city. however, they are located in the middle in Mũi Né resorts. Sealink and anantara are situated about a 20-minute driving motor from the centre of Phan Thiet city. the distance from Novotel to the Phan Thiet centre is only 5 mins by walking and close to many transport station like bus stop, train station. Now, moving on the facilities. There are some differences and similarities among the resort regarding facilities. All three resorts have variety of facilities such as spacious rooms, bar, villa, restaurant, swimming pool. However, Novotel and Sealink have own golf course. In contrast...

Gorilla My Love

...Gorilla My Love • Themes Betrayal The main theme of "Gorilla, My Love," and the thread that ties the two sections of the story together, is the idea of betrayal. Specifically, Hazel comes to believe that adults, who should have children's best interests at heart, cannot in fact be trusted to tell the truth where children are concerned. In the middle section of the story, which comes first chronologically, Hazel has already learned that "Grownups figure they can treat you just anyhow. Which burns me up?" She demands her money back from the theater because "I get so tired grownups messin over kids just cause they little and can't take em to court." But she does not have in mind the adult members of her own family. They have taught her to be truthful and to hold people to their word. As Granddaddy Vale puts it, "if that's what I said, then that's it." In a world where adults routinely take advantage of children, being able to count on one's family (as gangsters can count on their partners) is important protection. But Hunca Bubba has not only changed his name to Jefferson Winston Vale but decided to marry a woman his own age, and Hazel's family seems to be offering only double-talk in his defense. He is not changing his name, but changing it back, they say. The promise to marry Hazel was "just teasin," not a real promise at all. This strikes Hazel as the ultimate betrayal, because now her beloved uncle and Granddaddy show themselves to be no better than the rest of them. Completely...

Novels

...American Values I read Paradox and Dream by John Steinbeck and three other stories; Everyday Use, The Babysitter, and How to Talk to Your Mother. These stories are postmodern short stories. Now I think Steinbeck’s story is very applicable with current American values. The three stories are a little applicable with current American values. First, Paradox and Dream is mostly about America all together where the other stories are about just a few people. This story talks about all different kinds of people. “A man hungry and unemployed through his own stupidity and that of others, a man beaten by a brutal policeman, a women forced into prostitution by her own laziness, high prices, availability, and despair…” this sentence says a lot about Americans. There are a lot of homeless people who don’t get jobs and are starving because they just gave up on trying getting back on their feet to better their lives. There are so many “bad” cops who get sick of seeing the same people getting in trouble so they beat them to try and teach them a lesson or they think it’s fun picking on other people. They (some) take advantage of their job. Prostitution is really big in America; women are lazy to get a job & to work hard to make money. Prostitution can make you a lot of money but it’s so dangerous because you could be messing with the wrong crew and get put in the sex trade business. Now a lot of women get stuck in this situation. America has high prices like in our gas, clothes, foot, etc...

Raisin In The Sun Prejudice

...She confided in Mama about her worries saying “Mama, something is happening between Walter and me. I don’t know what it is – but he needs something – something I can’t give him anymore.”(Hansberry 285) This could be happening for many reasons, possibly because Walter is becoming obsessed with trying to be the main supporter of the house, or even the fact that Ruth has a secret of her own. While going through hard times in her marriage and financially, Ruth is seen as extremely unselfish when she realizes she is pregnant with her second child. While most would be excited, especially in these times when big families were on the rage, because of money problems, Ruth considers an abortion. In these times abortion was not only frowned upon, but illegal and extremely dangerous for the women. Although Ruth...

American Lit

...grateful exposed to different styles of literature; non-fiction, fiction, poems, plays, etc. Literature has a variety of styles; American literature, Irish literature, African American literature, and also Women’s literature are only a few examples. I am charmed by Women’s literature, everything from Annie Bradstreet to Judy Blume. My focus is to show how women portray a major role in the making of great literature, and also their existence in the works of art themselves. Distressingly, for years we women didn’t have a voice and our ideas were pushed aside. An American Editor Joan Goulianos wrote, “There exists a rich and complex literature by women that goes back to the Middle Ages, a literature that consists of diaries, of autobiographies…of stories- a literature in which women wrote about their lives and from which women and men today can draw insight about theirs.” I want to examine literary works and extract examples of the role of the women; revealing empowering and the undervalued identity of women. I want to explore how women writers affected American literature, and how the literary works...

...1 EFFI BRIEST Theodor Fontane 1895 TRANSLATED AND ABRIDGED BY WILLIAM A. COOPER, A.M. Associate Professor of German, Leland Stanford Jr. University CHAPTER I 2 CHAPTER I In front of the old manor house occupied by the von Briest family since the days of Elector George William, the bright sunshine was pouring down upon the village road, at the quiet hour of noon. The wing of the mansion looking toward the garden and park cast its broad shadow over a white and green checkered tile walk and extended out over a large round bed, with a sundial in its centre and a border of Indian shot and rhubarb. Some twenty paces further, and parallel to the wing of the house, there ran a churchyard wall, entirely covered with a small-leaved ivy, except at the place where an opening had been made for a little white iron gate. Behind this arose the shingled tower of Hohen-Cremmen, whose weather vane glistened in the sunshine, having only recently been regilded. The front of the house, the wing, and the churchyard wall formed, so to speak, a horseshoe, inclosing a small ornamental garden, at the open side of which was seen a pond, with a small footbridge and a tied-up boat. Close by was a swing, with its crossboard hanging from two ropes at either end, and its frame posts beginning to lean to one side. Between the pond and the circular bed stood a clump of giant plane trees, half hiding the swing. The terrace in front of the manor house, with its tubbed aloe plants and a few garden chairs...
