A Small Place Essay

Reality is how we perceive the world and that reality can be changed to circumstances and through communication. The reality can be altered to fit a certain group of people so that they will only ever see the beauty in the place that they are visiting. In A Small Place they expose this factor in the so called beautiful place of Antigua, but in actuality Antigua is disguised by beauty to hide the poverty and the corrupt government that has morphed these natives into something that they never should have been. The culture altered into some hybrid that would be pleasing to the upper class and to the tourists that would come to visit.

The setting of Antigua is almost standing still, things seem the same day to day to the villagers when it is described in A Small Place. But it real reality the government is in control, they speak English instead of their native tongue or its horrible slang described by Kincaid. The schooling is horribly lacking mostly shown by a library that has been damaged and needs to be rebuilt for the last ten years. The sign that is posted on the library refers to the colonial period of Antigua, which is before the time that the English took over with their ways. This is something that is not normally seen to tourists, they see a laid back way of life with simple people. But the people themselves did not choose this style, they did not wish for the education to be denied to them or their cultures to be lost. With the placement of the wealthy English, ways were forced upon them and the newer generations see it as the way things always were. They do not know any different because this is the way that the culture that was morphed around has brought them up.

Hyper reality is something that we see in almost every tourist attraction. We as a people do not to face the harsh truth of history. So we create these places that distract us from what is really going on. Our reality is morphed to believe something that is much more family and pleasant. If you think about how the English run everything in Antigua, it has been made beautiful to hide the poverty and the lack of education. Tourists do not want to see those types of things, they go on vacations to see new cultures and go to exotic destinations. Even though they do not know that they are not even experiencing the real culture of the area that they are in. It has been created for them just so the more wealthy people of Antigua can make money on tourism. Tourists are an ugly thing to the locals, because the local natives know that these people are not actually experiencing their culture, it is all an illusion. They see the tourists as rude and garish. Kincaid also talks about the tourists romanticize the poverty around them. Tourists like to believe that this is a humble way of living, something that Kincaid described their thinking of it as close to nature. But what these people do not realize is the weather problems that cause a shortage of fresh water and the lack of actual plumbing. They make themselves believe that these people have no problems and take the natives of Antigua for granted and exploit them in their reality that sees this place as a place of true beauty.

Instead of keeping the culture the way it was when the English colonized, they culture has become mainstream and ignorant like it is in America. Kincaid wishes that the children had the education when she was young, which focused on more classic literature and more important knowledge, instead of created this impoverished mainstream culture and education that exists there now. The wealthy part of Antigua does not care about these things. In the book Kincaid discusses how she tried to petition to raise money to repair the decade old damage that happened to the library. She had hopped with these repairs they would be able to bring back some of her childhood education and hopped that her people would grow from it. Even though the wealthy did donate money, it was for the wrong reasons. They like the ignorant nature of the people; they want to maintain that part of their reality. The English did it only on the hopes to make the area look more presentable to the tourists. How bad would it look to the tourists if they see a dilapidated library that has been sitting there for over a decade?

Reality is always made and perceived by the people, whether it is good is on how you look at it. That is just how human nature works; each individual person will look at things differently depending on their environment, parents, and the ruling government of the area. It is what makes the world go round. It is a sad aspect of life that we can be so influenced so much, because it will never be fully true. Antigua was made into a reality only mad for tourists, keeping the real people down and not able to rise up in their own culture and environment. It shows that how the influence of new people can impose a brand new culture and have it be accepted over time and with maintaining of new knowledge the old one can be forgotten all together. This is the governing factor that changed the people of Antigua and why Kincaid misses the way it used to be in her childhood. The culture has been changed and in its place it has become merely a tourist attraction that will always be seen as a place of beauty with no consequences to the people.

A Small Place

...A Small Place Essay British colonization is what led to the corruption of Antigua and society through the eyes of Jamaica Kincaid. The book shows the significance of the arrival of outside countries and people and the effect it had on Caribbean islands. Through Kincaid’s various views throughout the book, perspectives range from viewpoints of tourists traveling to the Caribbean to viewing society through the eyes of Antiguan natives; even through the eyes of Jamaica Kincaid herself as a young child during the colonization periods. Kincaid’s sour tone throughout the text shows her passion for her home country and its history as she feels Antigua has been and is corrupted by the outside presence of other nations. A majority of A Small Place is expressed through Kincaid’s personal point of view and, consequently, is written in the first-person. However, she tends to write in the second-person point of view when she’s referring to tourists and even early English colonists. Her constant use of “you” in her writing makes her claims more personal and strong in distinguishing the dislike for what the tourists represent. Her tone even gets more aggressive at times. “Do you ever try to understand why people like me cannot get over the past, cannot forgive and cannot forget? There is the Barclay’s Bank. The Barclay brothers are dead. The human beings they traded, the human beings who to them were only commodities, are dead.” (Kincaid 27) Her claims towards the tourists are...

A Small Place

...“A Small Place” In “A Small Place”, by Jamaica Kincaid, Kincaid reveals the native’s side on tourism. The essay is written in a second point of view and the reader is addressed directly in the essay. Kincaid places the reader in the shoes of the tourist, and tells the tourist what she would see through her travels on the island. In fact, the reader is a tourist in Antigua. Kincaid makes a connection in her essay that leaves the audience with an understanding of the corruption that goes on in the island of Antigua and how that relates to the negative view Kincaid has of tourists. Kincaid begins the essay by telling the beautiful sights and scenes Antigua has to offer. However, as the essay progresses the reader finds out how atrocious of a place Antigua is. For example, the schools are even unrecognizable: “You pass a building in a sea of dust and you think, It’s some latrines for people just passing by, but when you look again you see the building has written on it PIGLOTT’S SCHOOL”(Kincaid 1225). This is an example Kincaid uses to show how poor of a place Antigua is. This essay is written with many purposes in mind but the most important one is to change the tourists’ treatment and view of the locals. In order to make her point, Kincaid creates a feeling of compassion for the natives and instills a feeling of guilt in the tourists. Although, I think she is successful in creating sympathy for the natives, I do not think that she is successful in changing the behaviors of...

A Small Place

...A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid Viewing the world as a tourist and saying you actually experienced the place you traveled to would be naive. Actually getting to know the place is a bit different. You see the poverty and corruption, the struggle and then the beauties and differences. But getting to that point is also quite difficult. Jamaica Kincaid writes about tourists and traveling, and takes us on a tour of an island called Antigua. This is an excerpt taken from A Small Place. The author writes in second person addressing the tourist (who can be us the readers or any tourist around the globe). Kincaid writes in a tone where even I despised myself for traveling. She has the ironic and provocative voice that might offend the reader. I myself have witnessed tourists at a young age and I did envy them. I thought I was going to get stuck in this polluted city my whole entire life. I saw them frolicking the beaches and drinking white wine while eating gyros as I sat behind my uncle's bar wanting to have fun too. But I have also been a tourist laying on a beautiful beach as a young man served me sushi and a pina colada. Jamaica writes “But some natives-most natives in the world-cannot go anywhere. They are too poor... They are too poor to escape the reality of their lives; and they are too poor to live properly in the place where they live, which is the very place you, the tourist, want to go”(119 Kincaid). This quote made me think and realize that being a tourist is “ugly”...

Jamaica Kincaid A Small Place Analysis

...A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid is an effective non fiction text because of the use of blunt words and phrases. Kincaid was able to give me one side of a story that I may have wanted to look past. As a result of this, Kincaid left me with the feeling of guilt. Throughout the text, I questioned many things about myself. Whether it was the way I act on vacations or if I was actually “an ugly person”. These effective tools that Kincaid used, such as having me question myself and think in a different perspective really enhanced the message she was tried to get across. Tourists, such as many of my relatives, who travel to the Dominican Republic each year, might not see themselves the way the natives of that particular place do. While on...

Eating Sugar

...relate to the different cultures around the world. This narrow-mindedness is created by a tiny knowledge of circumstances. We are simply informed of all the misery, corruption and extremism outside our nation, with only all the appalling facts mentioned in the media world – the distance between nationalities is increased all the time, which makes it hard for people with different cultures to meet and communicate. If a foreigner came to your rescue, while you were in the most need of aid, how would you react? This issue is one of the main subjects in the short story Eating Sugar. The British short story Eating Sugar is written by Catherine Marriman, and was first published in Getting a Life by Honno in 2001.The set of the story takes place in the mountains in Thailand with an omniscient third-person narrator. We are introduced to a married couple, Alex and Eileen, who are on holiday in Thailand to visit their daughter, Suzanne. Alex, the father, is very suspicious of the natives, but in the end he overcomes the suspiciousness. Eileen anxious behavior makes it possible for Alex to suppress some of his fear, which makes him seem only uninterested. To try to describe his character I find it appropriate to use Duane Hanson’s, Tourist 2, a sculpture, from 1988. Duane Hanson sketches a typical image of tourists with cameras and Hawaii-shirts. This could be used as a parallel to Alex and Eileen’s behavior. They are only in Thailand to visit their daughter. They prefer to...

The Play Heratbreaker

...teenager and her elder sister Ra who is aged twenty two years. The play takes place in a solemn setting down in a small apartment bedroom. The room does not contain a lot of things; it is empty except for some few basic properties that make a bedroom. They events of the play take place at Long Beach in the California region. Michael Golamco has used the story in bringing out loneliness as a theme in the play and its consecutive results in the people affected by it. The play has some points as its plot develops where the instances of loneliness are stressed. It has been revealed either in a manner where the affected expresses it directly or in a way that the audience or the reader has to imply it indirectly. This theme is so diverse in the play and one is able to identify it even as it exists in isolations in the play. Throughout the play, Golamco has portrayed Vuthy as the character to portray this theme. Vuthy has featured in a number of scenarios where he has expressed his concern for the loneliness he is experiencing. Perhaps as a result of his own action or probably, as a situation he had no option as it was natural. One of the instances where this has been pictured is when Ra tries her best not to have her brother, Vuthy, to go with her. She tries to give her reasons to convince her of how he should be grateful of the fact that their auntie is coming to pick him with his computer to her place. Also, she tells him that “it would be bad to move you right now, put you in...

Jamacia Kincaid: An Analysis

...the past and the future. Her past was joyful and optimistic, while her future is dreary and uncertain. It is interesting that the author chose to discuss the sun because the sun is the center of our solar system, making it a pivotal element of our lives. This goes to show the sheer magnitude of change for the narrator. Later on, the narrator stated, “If I had to draw a picture of my future then, it would have been a large gray patch surrounded by black, blacker, and blackest”(lines 57-59). The black is an image of utter despair, and that was how she felt about her future in her old home, which is interesting because it contradicts the bright sun. However, she went on to day, “What a surprise this was to me, that I longed to be back in the place that I came from…”(lines 60-61). This further exemplifies the complicated nature of the problem. She did not like where she was when she was there, but when she left she wanted nothing more than to go back. The author also incorporated images of nature. The most memorable instance of this was how her realization of her new life entered, “...like a flow of water dividing formerly dry and solid ground, creating two banks…”(lines 37-39). This thought provoking simile shows the audience how divided her former sense of self and her expectations of the future are. She describes her past as “so familiar and predictable,” and her future as “a gray bank, an overcast seascape on which rain was falling and no boats were in sight,”(lines 39-43). This...

Small Business Management - Chapter 1

...All of us have had personal experiences with small business—as an owner, employee, friend, or relative of an owner, or in other relationships. Explain one or more such experience(s) you have recently had. I recently quit my job as a production coordinator and BCBG. This was a large company and in the end I realized that the benefits of a large company did not outweigh what I was losing in terms of personal job satisfaction. I returned to a much smaller business which only has 7 employees, including myself. I find that this provides me with more opportunity to learn all aspects of the business and gives me a more solid base of knowledge to build upon when I go to start my own company. After returning to a small business I found myself sleeping better at night and being excited to wake up in the morning and go to work, never knowing what fun tasks the day held for me. My coworker is always available and since she has personally done every job in the entire company, is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge and is able to answer every question I have. I also enjoy having a direct communication line to the owner of the business and approvals for projects and tasks are instant! I love it and couldn’t be happier. Best career move I ever made. 1.4) Distinguish between a small business and an entrepreneurial venture. If you were to start your own business, which would you wish it to be? Why? Digestive System

...pancreas. The glands of the digestive system are accessory organs because although food does not pass directly through them, they help the process, breaking down the toxins or waste digestion produces. There are four stages of digestion. The first stage takes place in the mouth where the action of teeth and saliva combine; chewing and partially digesting the food so that it will pass more easily along the oesophagus. Saliva contains the enzyme amylase which acts on cooked starch. The ball of food that leaves the mouth through the action swallowing is known as a bolus. The tongue pushes the bolus to the back of the mouth towards the pharynx, a muscular tube behind the mouth. The food passes into the pharynx and down to the oesophagus. In the oesophagus the chewed food is carried from the pharynx to the stomach by a muscular contraction known as peristalsis. The lining of the oesophagus secretes mucus to ease and lubricate the passage of food. The second stage of digestion takes place in the stomach. Food enters the stomach from the oesophagus via the cardiac sphincter, a valve that stops back flow of the stomach’s contents, and leaves it through the pyloric sphincter into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. In the stomach the gastric juices contains the enzymes, hydrochloric acid which neutralises bacteria and activates pepsin, and the pepsin then acts on...

The growing success of Snapple can be explained with 2 of the four principals of marketing mix. Marketing mix describes the set of tools that management can use to influence sales, in the traditional formulation: the 4Ps of marketing—product, price, place, and promotion. Analyzing the case is perceived that Snapple differentiated themselves through Place and Promotion. After they turned a marketing executive his chief for sales and marketing the company redefined its promotion strategy and expanded its distribution. Regarding Place, the merit was to keep the expansion of the current distribution model at a sustainable pace, growing consistent in the East coast and them to the rest of the country. The company has been kept simple and under the model of small distributors. About Promotion, with a limited budget, compared to the giants of the beverage industry, one of the biggest accomplishments of the new promotion strategy was the alignment of the product with the average citizen using real people and real situations, the promotion should follow the motto of the product: 100% Natural.
