America symbolizes and dominates the high-level basketball tournament in the world and its National Basketball Association (NBA) is a grand stage that collects the most competitive, skilled and professional basketball players from all over the world. Almost every basketball player has set his dream of being a player in the NBA since he started playing basketball. Obviously, getting into the NBA is difficult but it will be more difficult later, because every basketball player in NBA is approximately the best in their habitations such as schools, towns, cities, or countries. They went through numbers of eliminations, and finally defeated their competitors to join the NBA. As an old saying goes “survival of the fittest.” A successful NBA player has to do his best in every game in order to stand out from other players who are as strong as he does or even stronger, and then success is near at hand.

Yao Ming is a retired Chinese professional basketball player who last played for the Houston Rockets of the NBA. Although a summary of his basketball career and influence on the game inevitably fails to do it justice, as a phenomenal basketball player with a unique combination of fundamental diligence, optimism, agility, and an unquenchable competitive determination, Yao redefined the successful international NBA superstar.

As the contemporary adversary of Yao, also the legendary NBA player- Shaquille O’Neal said Yao “could have been up there in the top five centers to ever play the game.” Also, the current greatest shooting guard-Kobe Bryant said Yao “opened up a mark in a whole new place in the NBA and ought to be named as a member of the Hall of Fame.” A brief listing of his top accomplishments would include the following: 8 times NBA All-Star; 2 times All-NBA Second Team; 3 times All-NBA Third Team; NBA All-Rookie First Team; 3 times FIBA Asian Championship MVP.

“No pain, no gain.” this is Yao’s motto and also the essential characteristic that allows Yao to stand out from the crowd. Although his innate quality and jumping ability are not better than Black or White players, he is always working hard to improve himself. He was the first player to join the training, doing extra exercises after every game finished as well. Yao is 7ft 6 in and 310 lb. The burning calories that every time Yao jumps, which is equal to that an adult raises seven hundreds eggs over his head. In addition, Yao never stopped his diligence, while he got injuries. When his foot got hurt, he did left weight to increase the strength of his upper body. In the same way, he did bicycling to increase the strength of his lower body. There is no reason for a basketball player not to be successful if he is talented and diligent, so Yao’s tremendous diligence made his career statistics with 19 points, 9.2 rebounds. Besides, Yao’s diligence is out of court. A lot of people are puzzled with Yao’s decision of going back to university last year because he had stared his basketball career since he was 11, and he is already the richest athlete in China. Nevertheless, Yao answered that basketball makes him succeed in his career, but not life, but the knowledge is what most people need in a successful life. I believe that Yao’s diligence will definitely help him to succeed in studying as well.
Yao’s movement is one of his marked differences. It is agile, inconstant, and cunning. Although Yao had to face many mighty and talent centers in his whole career, such as Shaquille O’Neal, Dwight Howard, Erick Dampier, his unique movement made him become competitive. The movement is actually called “Dream Shake”, which is being well-know of its inventor Hakeem Olajuwon. Who is considered one of the greatest centers in the NBA history, and Yao was trained and leant from him. The movement is full with spins, feint movements, shakes. For example, when Yao gets ball around the free throw line, he pretends to shot the ball. The defense in order to disturb his shooting, he comes to stay with Yao. And then Yao can use the lag to shake off the defense and get inside to dunk. If the defense is not tricked, the movement already helps Yao to create some spaces between the defense and Yao, so he can confidently shoot. Yao’s movement is flexible, and depends on different kind of adversaries. He frequently changed his steps to shake off the defenses and score.
Yao’s indefensible shootings are his critical and guaranteed scoring skill, it includes fade-away shoot, hook shoot, etc. When he played in the NBA, he was the leader in the free line shooting, which was almost 95 percentages. In addition, most of players choose fade-away shoot and hook shoot because it is hardly defensive. By watching his numerous basketball games, these two kinds of shootings are Yao’s most dominated scoring skill. His height and wide wingspan helped him be difficult blocked or disturbed by other players. Every time he spun or was backward, it created enough spaces for him to complete his shootings. His eyes looked at the basket clearly and his hands concentrated on balancing the strength. This is the cause why Yao’s main offensive skill is shooting, which is accurate, unsusceptible, and experienced. Pick and Roll is a classical and useful strategy in the NBA, especially the teams which focus the offensive on restricted area. Because the Houston Rockets have the powerful center-Yao, so his ex-head coaches Rudy Tomjanovich and Jeff Van Gundy had set Pick and Roll as the main strategy for the Rockets. Two of his ex-teammates Tracy McGrady and Steve Francis both are famous and comprehensive players. They both could engage defenses and create spaces for Yao to play one on one inside. Or Yao could expand the defenses to three point line, and defend the defenses to help his teammates scoring. If the teammates could not score, they could pass the ball back to Yao because Yao’ shooting was also a threat to the adversary. In conclusion, although Yao has retired as an athlete last year, he is still actively expanding his athleticism. For example, he is committed to doing philanthropy. His ‘Yao’ foundation invited the other international basketball players such as Steve Nash to host a charitable basketball tournament in 2010. Also, he donated millions of dollars to the disaster area in China. His success in the basketball is a superior example that inspires ambitious basketball players to move forward.

Basketball has always been a passion of the author ever since he was a young boy playing the game in front of his childhood home. Immediately after high school, he had put himself in a situation of being a young father raising a newborn, beautiful little girl. It was then, when he realized that he wanted to become a basketball coach. He felt that it would be tough for him to pursue a career playing basketball, while having to support a family, so he figured why not coach the sport that he was passionate about. His experiences with former coaches, both positive and negative, have helped shape his coaching philosophy. The first high school coach that the author played for helped him realize the coach that he did not want to become for his players. This high school coach would be consistently late to practice, make inappropriate comments to players and simply roll the basketballs out and have the team practice on their own. This coach almost turned the author off from playing the sport that he adored because of the ineffective coaching style that was demonstrated. The author then ended up transferring schools in hope for a better experience playing basketball. The last coach that the author played for in high...

Girls' Basketball Camp

...Girls’ Basketball Camp Thirty seconds left on the shot clock and there are five confident and athletic girls who have no time to take a breather. The game of basketball is not easy. To run a basketball camp, there are many qualities needed such as enthusiasm, knowledge, teaching ability, and the willingness to interact. Locating a site to hold a camp, determining the right dates, finding the participants, and finding volunteers are the many steps involved to running a successful camp. That is why running a basketball camp for middle school girls is a hard job to do because of all the people and equipment that is involved. The very first step to running a basketball camp is to have the appropriate facilities. If the participants are going to enjoy the camp, having a clean and nice facility will increase the chances of it. In order to practice somewhere, permission is needed first. The location of the camp is important. If most of the girls are participants from the same school, holding the camp at the school gym is a great idea. In order to reserve the gym for the camp, dates and times must be set. The players are unable to participate in the camp if they do not have permission from their parents. These permission forms should ask the parent(s) permission if their child is allowed to be active in the camp. These permission forms should be turned in at least a couple of weeks before the actual date of the camp to know exactly how many girls are attending. Showers and...

It is an old sport in Australia, “1905 - First recorded game in Australia was played at YMCA facilities in Melbourne “Basketball Victoria website. Who to blame for such loss, some say “that sport is a victim of its own success and had shifted away from the model that served it so well “Former Sydney Kings and Australian Boomer’s captain, Jason Smith. In my opinion the fault falls on basketball Australia and the professional participant teams. Sports Analytics Paper

...2478/hukin-2013-0016 161 Identifying Basketball Performance Indicators in Regular Season and Playoff Games by Javier García1, Sergio J. Ibáñez1, Raúl Martinez De Santos2, Nuno Leite3, Jaime Sampaio3 The aim of the present study was to identify basketball game performance indicators which best discriminate winners and losers in regular season and playoffs. The sample used was composed by 323 games of ACB Spanish Basketball League from the regular season (n=306) and from the playoffs (n=17). A previous cluster analysis allowed splitting the sample in balanced (equal or below 12 points), unbalanced (between 13 and 28 points) and very unbalanced games (above 28 points). A discriminant analysis was used to identify the performance indicators either in regular season and playoff games. In regular season games, the winning teams dominated in assists, defensive rebounds, successful 2 and 3-point field-goals. However, in playoff games the winning teams’ superiority was only in defensive rebounding. In practical applications, these results may help the coaches to accurately design training programs to reflect the importance of having different offensive set plays and also have specific conditioning programs to prepare for defensive rebounding. Key words: Performance analysis, game-indicators, win/lose, basketball. Introduction Traditionally, preparing basketball teams to succeed in competition was a complex process that was based on players’ fitness levels and anthropometric characteristics...

Why College Is Unfair

...Do you think the National Basketball Association’s rule of making a player wait to be drafted after being one year removed from high school is unfair? Many high school basketball players think this rule is also unfair. They think this rule is unjust because college is not necessary for professional basketball players. Going to college and playing college basketball can be very helpful to the league, but it is not necessary. It is not guaranteed that you will be a well skilled player, or quite possibly a better player, if you go to college for one or more years instead of coming directly out of high school. Many National Basketball Association legends and future legends have bypassed college and has or is having a very successful and tenured career. LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard, and Kobe Bryant are just a few high school phenoms who turned professional and had sensational careers. Turning professional directly out of high school is a great idea, but it is also very controversial. Remember when Taylor Swift moved to Nashville at the age of fourteen to become a country music star and everyone ridiculed her and her parents for the...

Basketball in Latin America

...American backgrounds integrating into the game of basketball, I wonder how these international translations are in turn changing the game we see at home. In Latin America, where the climate and geographies are so much different than the one in the United States, we find growth in basketball. Though the NBA in Latin America is growing, it is still not a hit in Central and South America. Though whenever you go either it is Latin America, China, America, etc… there is always someone playing the game. Even in the likes of Mexico, they are mostly known for militant based political revolution than anything else, but basketball courts do exist. The courts might be used for other things like farming during the day, but you will always see some kid playing and working on his game. Just like what I do when I am in my hometown hooping outside of my house, no court just the concrete and the hoop I have next to my garage. The growth of basketball throughout Latin America region is unexpected, only because they compete for national attention in their number one sport soccer. Basketball has to compete in Central American countries like El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba, and Brazil. Volleyball is also a sport that is highly accepted, but mostly in Brazil and Argentina. However, the basketball being played in soccer dominating countries is often influenced by soccer, but depends on the development of the country. “I know in Argentina [basketball] is very popular. Of course, not even close to...

...______________________________________________________________________________ Under Armour Enters the Basketball Shoe Market ______________________________________________________________________________ This case was written by Professors George E. Belch and Michael A. Belch. It is intended to be used as the basis for class discussion rather than to illustrate either effective or ineffective handling of a management situation. The case was compiled from published sources. Company Background Under Armour (UA) was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank, a former Maryland football player, who began by selling compression clothing that could “wick” sweat away from the body to college sports teams out of the trunk of his car. Plank was a football player at the University of Maryland, and hated wearing cotton shirts to practice in the hot, humid Maryland climate. Knowing that he would never be an NFL player, Plank devoted his efforts to starting a company that could make a product that would be an improvement over cotton, in that it would not absorb sweat and be much more functional and comfortable to wear. Once made, he started selling the shirts to the lacrosse and football teams at the University of Maryland out of the trunk of his car. In 1998, the football oriented movie “Any Given Sunday” was being filmed in Baltimore where Under Armour is based. The producers of the movie were looking for a product that would...
