Rebecca Rashid published in the Washington Square News, an article on “Tattoo Tolerance: Older Generation Must Embrace Body Art.” Rashid’s article has brought light over the controversy of whether or not tattoos and body art are acceptable in the workplace, and how having these body modifications can affect they way that you as an individual are perceived in society. Employers are starting to see the results of how hiring tattooed employees affects their business. Even with the art of tattooing becoming more popular, the negative stigma around body modification is still heavily present amongst older generations and communities. Often times these tattoos of self-expressing art tell stories about the person who adorns the design. Ranging from …show more content…
Whether the tattoo is a piece of mainstream flash art or a unique, hand drawn, one of a kind design; everyone has an interest or at least a curiosity about tattoos. Have you ever seen a doctor here in the US with visible tattoos? Chances are highly unlikely, yet in the next few years doctors will show off their meaningful tattoos proudly. The values and ethics of having even minor body modifications are strongly argued. Some people now propose that having ink or a piercing can help employees to retain dignity and independence from the company. Corporations that allow for a little bit of personality to show in their employees promote self-awareness and self-identification that is separate from the business. By allowing for healthy self-expressing in employees, companies can start to see healthy relationships form and begin to stray away from negative attitudes toward employers. In some cases, having an appearance that makes an employee stand out a little from the background can be beneficial to the …show more content…
Often it was that the body modifications in the society were there to display ranking or family lines. There are hundreds if not thousands of examples of humans practicing a body modification culture. So why is it today looked down upon? Gang affiliation and drug use picked up the use of tattoos and used it within their gangs or regions to establish ties and tell differences between different gangs and groups. This caused tattoos to obtain a bad rep in recent decades. The Yakuza are a well-known, Japanese gang that are notorious for drug cartel and murders. Yakuza members display unique tattoos that cover the torso, and all limbs. Usually stopping at the sleeves so that the tattoos are easily hidden under long clothing. There are many other existing examples of cultures and societies that have used tattoos in a negative light. Times are changing as the tattoo culture and industry are booming. Tattoos here no longer mainly represent those who have been in prison, but often are used as positive self-expression in the younger and upcoming generations. A great example of positive self-expression is that those within the US military often display tattoos that display and represent the time in which they served our country. Many veterans who display tattoos are often first priority hires for employers because they are so highly skilled. So why are tattoos being discriminated upon for the rest

The Cultural, Political and Legal Environment of International Business

...al The cultural, political and legal environment of international business Abstract A study of the elements of a domestic market and those of an international market may reveal many crucial differences, especially political, legal and cultural differences. For example, the "rules of the game” of business in the international market are diverse, changeable and often unclear. The international firm may have to content with different legal and ethical standards in different host countries. In this paper the parameters of the political, legal, and the cultural environment of international business will be considered, The paper also relates how political, legal, and cultural incidents or situations may become roadblocks to the smooth operation of business ventures in foreign countries. Misunderstandings and breakdown in communication often arise from differences in perception by executives who are not from the same cultural, legal and political background. International investors need to know what elements in a foreign culture have the greatest influence over consumption patterns in general and particularly the consumption behaviour to their specific product. By reflecting on the language, religion, demography, climate, values and beliefs, education, labour, roles of women, family, ethnic groups and other similar elements, the international business person will be able to, not only participate in the international economy with a better perception of the situation, but also be able...

Body Language

...body language how to read body language signs and gestures - non-verbal communications - male and female, for work, social, dating, and mating relationships Body Language - technically known as kinesics (pronounced 'kineesicks') - is a significant aspect of modern communications and relationships. Body Language is therefore very relevant to management and leadership, and to all aspects of work and business where communications can be seen and physically observed among people. Body language is also very relevant to relationships outside of work, for example in dating and mating, and in families and parenting. Communication includes listening. In terms of observable body language, non-verbal (non-spoken) signals are being exchanged whether these signals are accompanied by spoken words or not. Body language goes both ways: * Your own body language reveals your feelings and meanings to others. * Other people's body language reveals their feelings and meanings to you. The sending and receiving of body language signals happens on conscious and unconscious levels. (N.B. Preface This isn’t really a teacher’s manual, not, at least, in the sense of a catechism of questions and correct answers and interpretations. Because the questions provided after each selection in Rereading America are meant to stimulate dialogue and debate — to generate rather than terminate discourse — they rarely lend themselves to a single appropriate response. So, while we’ll try to clarify what we had in mind when framing a few of the knottier questions, we won’t be offering you a list of “right” answers. Instead, regard this manual as your personal support group. Since the publication of the first edition, we’ve had the chance to learn from the experiences of hundreds of instructors nationwide, and we’d like to use this manual as a forum where we can share some of their concerns, suggestions, experiments, and hints. We’ll begin with a roundtable on issues you’ll probably want to address before you meet your class. In the first section of this manual, we’ll discuss approaches to...

Strategic Market Segment

...Confirming Proofs Chapter 3 Strategic Market Segmentation Segmenting markets is a foundation for superior performance. Understanding how buyers’ needs and wants vary is essential to designing effective marketing strategies. Effective approaches to segmenting markets may be one of the most critical factors in developing and implementing market-driven strategy. The need to improve an organization’s understanding of buyers is escalating because of buyers’ demands for uniqueness and the growing array of technology available to generate products to satisfy these demands. Companies are responding to the opportunities to provide unique customer value with products ranging from customized phone pagers for business users to self-designed, individualized greeting cards for consumers. Indeed, McKinsey research underlines the weakness of thinking about markets only in general terms—talking of market trends, growth markets, mass markets, declining markets, and so on—and collecting information that describes only broad trends, where differences within markets are averaged-out. They point to the identification of opportunities from a deeper understanding of markets at a “granular” level. Market fragmentation and increasing granularity characterize a growing number of markets. The compelling logic of market granularity is that effective strategy can emerge only from a much finer understanding of market segments, their needs, and the capabilities required to serve them.1 Best Buy provides an interesting...
