My family and I moved to America to pursue the American Dream in the beginning of February of 2005. As every new human in a new country, my family and I was trying to adapt to the American style. However, the months of our first new year in America went as rapid as a blink of an eye. It was already fall season: the leaves in November were indeed colorful. For example, the leaves were in variety of colors such as: red, orange, brownish, and a mix of twilight. The month of November is significant in America. ...Every year on the fourth Thursday of November many people in America celebrate Thanksgiving. The Americans celebrate it because of the pilgrims by doing traditions they did. ...chose to discuss is Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a holiday that has its origins in North America circa 1621 when Wampanoag Indians shared a Harvest Feast with the colonists of Plymouth. The holiday was continued throughout the years until it was declared an official holiday by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. (Staff) This holiday is generally celebrated by people who live in North America. These people generally span across a wide range of cultures, and the actual celebration may vary from family to family. A Thanksgiving Day celebration normally consists of a group of family or friends, or mix of both who gather together for a large dinner and companionship. One custom people follow is gathering together. Thanksgiving is a time to appreciate and spend time with your loved ones, whomever they may be. Another custom is the president’s annual turkey pardon, where he “pardons” one or two turkeys from becoming a Thanksgiving meal. The Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade is also a customary tradition. It runs in New York and is broadcasted live on National Television every year. One custom that is celebrated by about 90% of Americans is the cooking of a large Turkey as the main dish for the celebratory meal.(Staff) The cultural traditions for this Holiday have evolved over time and will most likely continue to evolve throughout the years so I do not believe that a change impacts the holiday or traditions negatively. The most important entrée served at the Thanksgiving meal is the turkey. The...

How Does Okonkwo's Culture Change American Culture

...It is a holiday in November where one’s family joins together to celebrate one another and share what they are thankful for in life. Thanksgiving morning generally begins in the morning with watching the Thanksgiving parade on the television or maybe even in real life. A small breakfast is also prepared. Soon after preparations for the night’s dinner begins. During the day there is a small tray of food for everyone to snack on during the day, that way we do not become full before dinner. The meal takes most of the day to cook. Some families even begin preparation for cooking the night before. Thanksgiving dishes for my family include a turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, string bean casserole, macaroni and cheese, dinner rolls, and gravy. It is a lot to cook for one person so we help each other. Perhaps you could help cook and eat Thanksgiving dinner and share with everyone the things that you are thankful...

...A West and East Coast Interpretation of Uncle Sam’s Thanksgiving Dinner The first cartoon of the Uncle Sam’s Thanksgiving Dinner was created by Thomas Nast in 1869. His cartoon shows a positive attitude towards and exemplifies a more unified American identity. His cartoon however, was lampooned eight years later in 1877 by G.F Keller, whom clearly did not have the same vision on immigration as Nast did. Through the stereotypes, variety of people, quotes, and symbolism shown in both cartoons, the illustrators reveal “a direct contrast on two different interpretations coming from the American East and the West coast on the issue of immigration.” In Uncle Sam’s Thanksgiving Dinner 1869, Thomas Nast shows ethnic diversity and proposes a vision of what could be a future possibility on political equality in the United States of America. The people seated at the dinner table come from all over the world, they are: Native American, German, French, Arab, British, African, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, and Irish. In this image Nast subtly includes a portrait of the “Castle Garden.” The Castle Garden was a place where most immigrants were processed, this was similar to a home for the immigrant. Another strong tie to this image is the Fifteenth Amendment which is, “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by ant state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” During this time period Mexicans were being...

Thanks Giving Essay

...Thanksgiving Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863, when during the Civil War; President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26. As a federal a popular holiday in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the major holidays of the year. The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive their first brutal winter in New England. The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days, providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90 Native Americans. The feast consisted of fish and shellfish, wild fowl, venison, berries and fruit, vegetables, harvest grains, and the Three Sisters: beans, dried Indian maize or corn, and squash. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"—days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought. Thanksgiving Day in the United States started as a way of giving thanks to food collected from a good harvest or problems that were fixed. It originated in 1621 and was a religious festival, but is now largely secular. It is now a holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. Many people trace the origins of the modern Thanksgiving Day to the harvest celebration that the Pilgrims held in Plymouth, Massachusetts...

Argumentative Essay On Turkey

...Every year, every Thanksgiving, Americans look forward to the President of the United States to present the pardoned turkey. For the last seven years, it has been President Obama with both his daughters, Sasha and Malia cracking dad jokes and finishing with a Queen-knighting like process where the President pardons a turkey. Naturally, the media coverage is abnormally large, maybe due to the fact that it humanizes the Obama family or maybe because it’s a funny American tradition. Rewinding slightly back in time, Harry Truman was the first to really receive a live turkey but it was actually on Christmas instead of Thanksgiving. John F. Kennedy first got a turkey in which he celebrated for being just the a turkey for the white house. President...

...Thanksgiving is a traditional annual celebration and it is celebrated on the United States and Canada. In the United States is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November and in Canada is celebrated on the second Monday of October. Generally during this holiday people gather around a table with family and friends to celebrate this day. Thanksgiving has a different meaning for some people, but for most of them is synonymous of huge meals, parades, football match and spending quality time with the beloved ones. This holiday is not only about cooking delicious dishes and spending time with family but also is a reminder of being thankful for all the blessings in our lives. More than half of American families celebrate thanksgiving. History The Thanksgiving Day had its origins in a mixture of European and aboriginal traditions. Both cultures had their own different way of celebrating the harvest day, but when the Europeans came to America for the first time; they brought their own tradition better known as the harvest festival which celebrates the end of their journey as well as the good harvest of the year. Despite the origins of Thanksgiving Day, this holiday is similar in Canada and the United States but everyone celebrates it in their own way. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621; where a group of 102 people (the pilgrims) from England arrived to the new world. They found a village called Plymouth. As the winter came along and diseases struck the village the...

Many people will cook dinner for their family, neighbors and friends. They are have to eat turkey and also so many different types of food and salads. That week nobody has any school or work; they will celebrate Thanksgiving. The interesting thing for me was after Thanksgiving dinner. That's called Black Friday; last year I only celebrated Thanksgiving dinner in my friend's home and missed Black Friday. So this year I chose Black Friday. I got some experience for shopping on Black Friday. My personal advice is if you are going to go your favorite store, just go there four or five...

...complete fabrication. Three of the many misconceptions that he goes in to are: that Columbus was the first to reach North America, that Plymouth Rock was the where the first “pilgrims” landed, and that Jamestown was the first English Colony in the new world. Another main point that he wants to get across is that, in his research around the country, he found that the myths or legends were more important to the people than what actually happened. The common idea of the first european to set foot on North America is that it was Columbus. This is far from the truth. The group that holds that title are the Vikings. They arrived in what is modern day “Newfoundland”. They also arrived half a millenium before any other europeans reached North America. Now, the settlement wasn’t a beacon of its time as it was just a farm settlement but, it was there long before Columbus’s great grandparents were even alive. The reason why American’s choose not to acknowledge this or flat out do not know about this is likely due to the fact that the Vikings didn’t land in modern day “USA”. The fantasy that Plymouth rock was where the first english settlers landed and that thanksgiving was eaten on it and all the indians were invited and that it was all perfect is just that, a fantasy. First of all, Roanoke was the first english settlement. Second, the Indians were not invited to Thanksgiving. The reason why the myth of Plymouth is so perpetuated throughout American history is because, as the author is told...

Persuasive Essay About Thanksgiving

...Before you even think about eating me Mr. Farmer, please rethink your decision about eating Me. This is because I among many other turkeys would like to live, also because Thanksgiving is an outdated tradition, and because there is a way that you don’t have to eat me and other turkeys, but still have a good meal without meat. Although Thanksgiving is a very well known holiday in America, many turkeys die to make this happen. In recent years, though there have been programs that try to stop this. One even lets the animals eat first before humans do, and humans and animals have been eating like this for almost 18 years which I foster the idea of. Trying this method will change your reflection about how you see the animals and how they contribute...
