...Impact of Organized Retailing on the Unorganized Sector Mathew Joseph Nirupama Soundararajan Manisha Gupta Sanghamitra Sahu May 2008 INDIAN COUNCIL FOR RESEARCH ON INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC RELATIONS Foreword The retail sector is expanding and modernizing rapidly in line with India’s economic growth. It offers significant employment opportunities in all urban areas. This study, the second undertaken by ICRIER on the retail industry, attempts to rigorously analyse the impact of organized retailing on different segments of the economy. No distinction has been made between foreign and domestic players, in analyzing the impact of the increasing trend of large corporates entering the retail trade in the country. The findings of this study are based on the largest ever survey of unorganized retailers (the so-called “mom and pop stores”), consumers, farmers, intermediaries, manufacturers, and organized retailers. In addition, an extensive review of international experience, particularly of emerging countries of relevance to India, has also been carried out as part of the study. The study estimates that the total retail business in India will grow at 13 per cent annually from US$ 322 billion in 2006-07 to US$ 590 billion in 2011-12. The unorganized retail sector is expected to grow at approximately 10 per cent per annum with sales rising from US$ 309 billion in 2006-07 to US$ 496 billion. Organized retail, which constituted a low four per cent of total retail in 2006-07, is estimated...

...1 Av o n 2 0 11 A n n u a l R e p o r t To Our Shareholders: I am writing you at a time of momentous change for your company. After 12 years as Avon’s CEO, I believe that the time is right to recruit a new CEO to lead the company’s next chapter. As Avon’s Chairman, I am committed to ensuring a successful management transition, maintaining our strong relationships with approximately 6.4 million active independent Representatives worldwide, and working with the new CEO in supporting the company’s strategic direction and brand positioning. On a personal note, it has been a true privilege leading Avon as CEO since 1999, as we have grown the company from a decentralized group of local operating entities to a globally managed business with global brands and a global operating model. During this time, revenues more than doubled to $11.3 billion, the number of Representatives also doubled and we expanded our reach to women in more than 100 markets around the world. Looking to the future, a new CEO will provide a fresh lens and additional operational capabilities to manage a company of Avon’s increasing size and scale. With the Beauty and Direct Selling industries growing, coupled with our broad geographic footprint, Avon continues to have significant growth opportunities. To capitalize on these opportunities, however, we will need to address the near-term challenges which have slowed the company’s recent revenue growth. In 2011, revenues were up 4% or 1% in constant dollars,* compared...

...PREFACE As a part of the course curriculum, the first year M.B.A. students are required to prepare a financial project report. The objective behind preparing this project report is to relate the management subjects taught in the classroom to their practical application. The preparation of this project report is based on financial analysis of annual reports of 5 consecutive years for a public limited company using Ratio Analysis, Common Size Statements and other financial tools. The scope of the project report is limited to the study of the financial position of the company on the basis of the published data available. Our work in this project is, therefore, a humble attempt toward this end. In spite of our best efforts there may be errors of omissions and commissions, which may please be excused. Whether it is an explanation of how firms work, or people vote, or customers buy, or governments subsidise, economists have examined evidence and produced theories which can be checked against practice. This book aims to cover the main aspects of the study of economics which students will need to learn when studying for examinations at various levels. The book will also be useful for the general reader who comes across these terms in the financial pages of newspapers as well as in specialist magazines. The dictionary gives succinct explanations of the 3,000 most frequently found terms. It also covers the many abbreviations which are often used in writing on economic subjects. Entries are also given for prominent economists, from Jeremy...
