A Troublesome Inheritance Summary

Hi everyone,

Apologies for the slow response. Like Russell, I too have been down for the count with the flu!

Firstly, I found Mcpherson's claim that the meaning of the word 'race' is too ambiguous to be salvaged, interesting. A quick look in the Oxford dictionary gives a clear definition:

“Each of the major divisions of humankind, having distinct physical characteristics.”

And this definition is in keeping with biology texts:

“A population within a species that is distinct in some way, especially a subspecies.”

Mcpherson mentions that different groups such as anthropologists, sociologists, and lay-people, have preferred meanings, but given that there seems to be a clear definition to the word, why should 'preferred meanings' that stray from the actual definition, mean we should abandon the concept? …show more content…
Wade asserts that it was done with good intentions, specifically, as a response to anti-semitism. Montagu even claimed “That the very word race is itself racist”. Wade argues that as a result, many scholars began to avoid the term and topic for fear of being deemed a racist. I think we can still see this now, with many researchers noting that conducting research on possible racial differences, will likely be detrimental to their careers. Not to mention we see de-platforming of people such as Charles Murray.

Mcpherson stated that “I am here mainly concerned with the criteria by which science would rebut the view that race does not exist”. However, given that the assertion of race seems to have come before a more recent denial (Mcpherson here is careful to say that 'race' is not necessarily false) of race, isn't the burden of proof on the race deniers to show why races do not

Matrimony in Islam lays right and corresponding responsibility on each spouse. Children in wedlock are given legitimacy and share inheritance from their parents. There are two kinds of marriage system, which is monogamy and polygamy. The meaning of monogamy is a system of marriage where a person has only one spouse while polygamy is where a person has two spouses and above. Polygamy can be defined as two types; one is polyandry, where a woman has more than one husband, and the other one is polygyny, where a man has more than one wife. However, only polygyny is allowed and polyandry is forbidden by Islam entirely (Why Islam, n.d.). Polygamous marriage Islam has bring some impacts to the Muslims such as psychological...

Challenges and Prospects of Taxation in Ghana

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION The desire to build a civilized country with a strong and sound economy is the desire of every patriotic Ghanaian citizen. Tax payment is the demonstration of such a desire, although most income earners see it as a means of exploitation by the government. Tax payment is a voluntarily contribution imposed by the Government on personal income earners, companies, investors, exporters, importers etc. revenue realised from taxation is a major source of revenue to the Government of Ghana, and as such is an important tool used in the development of Ghana and her economy. However, tax evasion which is the wilful and deliberate violation of the law in order to escape payment of tax, posses a big threat to income taxation in Ghana as it reduces tax revenue to the Government, thereby hampering economic growth and development. However, this research was undertaken to help increase revenue generated from income tax to the government, by pointing out the challenges faced by tax officials in discharging their lawful duties. Barbara Jeane Fields Slavery, Race and Ideology

...Barbara Jeanne Fields Slavery, Race and Ideology in the United States of America Two years ago, a sports announcer in the United States lost his job because he enlarged indiscreetly—that is, before a television audience—upon his views about ‘racial’ differences. Asked why there are so few black coaches in basketball, Jimmy ‘the Greek’ Snyder remarked that black athletes already hold an advantage as basketball players because they have longer thighs than white athletes, their ancestors having been deliberately bred that way during slavery. ‘This goes all the way to the Civil War,’ Jimmy the Greek explained, ‘when during the slave trading . . . the owner, the slave owner would breed his big black to his big woman so he could have a big black kid, you see.’ Astonishing though it may seem, Snyder intended his remark as a compliment to black athletes. If black men became coaches, he said, there would be nothing left for white men to do in basketball at all. Embarrassed by such rank and open expression of racism in the most ignorant form, the network fired Jimmy the Greek from his job. Any fool, the network must have decided, should know that such things may be spoken in the privacy of the 95 locker-room in an all-white club, but not into a microphone and before a camera. Of course, Jimmy the Greek lays no claim to being educated or well informed. Before he was hired to keep audiences entertained during the slack moments of televised sports events, he was...

History 1

...Chapter Fifteen The Roman Empire at its Zenith (to 235 CE) In retrospect we can see that a decline of the Roman empire began in the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180), when the Germanic barbarians along the Rhine and especially the Danube discovered that the Romans were not well equipped to fight wars on two fronts. When the emperor, that is, was preoccupied with a war against the Parthians in Mesopotamia, the Roman frontier along and beyond the Danube was poorly defended, and the barbarians could make raids deep into the Roman provinces. Despite the danger of wars on two fronts, the Roman empire was able to manage well enough from the 160s until 235, when the decline became precipitous, and brought with it radical economic, cultural and religious changes. This chapter, therefore, will look at the empire in its relatively golden period, from the first century until the death of Alexander Severus, the last of the Severi, in 235. The classes This was a stratified, hierarchical society in all ways. In civic status the top of the pyramid was the emperor, followed by Roman provincial governors, senators and other officials, then by the local gentry, and next by the rank and file of Roman citizens. Of all the free men in the empire, only about a third ranked as Roman citizens. Right behind the Romans were the Hellenes (in the Greek-speaking eastern provinces the Hellenes were enrolled as such in the municipal census), then came Judaeans, and finally the other barbarians. So in...
