A&P Contrast

“A&P” and “Gryphon” have two very unique story plots yet they seem to resemble one interesting characteristic that develops throughout the story leading to an interesting turn of events. The stories are both told in first person narrative and have a sort of interesting rebellious appeal to them. It begins with the contrast between the stories plot development but leads to a troublesome “fork in the road” type scenario that puts an interesting twist onto the conclusion of the story. Some may see rebelliousness as acting against the norm but “John Updike” the author of A&P tells a tale of how two different sets of people both defy society and begin paving a way of change into the new generation. “Gryphon’s” story set is told from how a change in the way we think may leave us changing the way we live our lives. The stories may seem to have different alternatives overall but the way they are portrayed by the authors have a similar comparative aspect that can be looked at from both angles regardless of the storyline. When someone seems destined to choose a different path in life often times people may see this person as an outcast or indifferent to some. In A&P Sammy seems to not to be fulfilled with the way he spends his dull uneventful youth life ultimately leading to the defiance and betrayed to his boss over a deemed inappropriate act. “"Is it done?" he asks, the responsible married man finding his voice. I forgot to say he thinks he's going to be manager some sunny day, maybe in 1990 when it's called the Great Alexandrov and Petrooshki Tea Company or something.”(Updike 132) Referring to Stokesie and the way life already seems laid out for him without much hope in change, this may lead one to believe that Sammy is not your average run of the mill teenager and maybe someone who wants more out of life other than working at the cash register of the local “A&P”. But along with change come the struggles and tough decisions one must act upon in order to get ahead in life. When Sammy quits in front of the entire store it goes against social cues of how one is to properly act and resign from a position of employment. The immediate thought is of remorse about his decision and disapproval he may receive from his mother for committing such an act, but the point to be taken is that confronted with this and the choices made he must follow through with the gesture as the results can be harmful to one’s self. It’s a little different when older generations seems to rebel against the ways a newer generation thinks and acts but when going against the ways a generation is educated or what you think should be taught seems immorally irresponsible to most. The beauty to this story is how wonderful the imagination can be and how freethinking can bring new exciting light into a dimly lit scenario. In this case his substitute, Ms. Ferenzie, is that new exciting light into Tommy’s eyes as to him she seems creditable for the things she has elaborated upon. The thought of new ideas and new energy instilled brings questionable answers to what is plausible. “a half monster, half bird and half lion”(Gryphon 141) The reference to Pinocchio is about illusion to reality because Pinocchio is a marionette better known as a puppet that is transformed into a real life human. This captivates how Ms. Ferenzie is often skewing reality in her own way and interpreting life how she sees it in her eyes leading the kids to wondrous imaginations. The way both authors evaluate rules and social systems really defines that with rebellious acts or mystical outlooks on life we take with it the impact this makes upon our life. Through this basis we can look at both stories much like a lesson to be learned in life. Both Updike and Baxter recall a personal tale that can be looked at as a turning point in each their lives that ultimately had either a negative or in this case a positive effect upon him or herself. So how much can we take away from this to be learned, you can take from it what its worth and leave what you choose not to. Ultimately you have control over the life you lead and you have the right to think the way you conclude necessary. We may all not choose the same path or choose to be followed in such a way, but this right to be the person you choose and captivate the people you touch is indefinitely what makes the world go round.

Poverty Is a State of Mind

...------------------------------------------------- Poverty is a state of mind “If you think you’re poor, you’re poor. If you think you’re rich, you’re rich. No-one is ever going to come along to cure your poverty. The only solution is to do it yourself.” These words are incisive. But is this the naked truth? “Poverty is a state of mind” (2012), written by Bernard Hare, deals with the idea of poverty as a mind-set. In this essay I will analyse and comment on Bernard Hare’s essay, based on a study of the writer’s use of contrasts and the use of his own experiences during the essay – lastly with an investigation of the writer’s intention. (115) Bernard Hare’s essay was originally broadcasted on BBC Radio 3 as a radio essay in 2012, later on, it was reprinted on BBC’s website. The story basically takes place in Leeds, in the North of Britain. We are following Hage through his upbringing in a poor environment. His father worked as a coal miner, and his mother was a shop worker in a department store. The events of the story are listed in chronological order - from back in the days where Hare was a child, spending his days among the cobbled terraces of east Leeds, to 1968 when his family got their first black and white television, and lastly he is taking us to the present, through his experiences as an alcoholic...

Novelle

...------------------------------------------------- Sorry for the Loss How is it possible that a young man who has been an inmate for at least five years, can still have glowing white teeth, glowing skin and a big grin? Why is a knife that has been made to kill and slice been named after an innocent creature such as a butterfly? We have all these weird questions, as to why two very different things, which clearly make up contrasts, are put together. Why is this, really? There are no answers, or in fact there might be all the answers in the world. You decide and you create the truth. In the literature of the 21st century we are allowed to make up our own truths. Bridget Keehan takes us on a journey in Sorry for the Loss where these questions pop up more than once. In the following I will try to make up my own truth to these questions. The plot of the story proceeds chronologically and starts in medias res; this means that we are thrown into the story, with no introduction as to where we are or whom we are going to meet. A third person narrator with a restricted point of view, the narrator is not a participant in the story, tells Sorry for the Loss. A restricted point of view, also called limited omniscient, means that the narrator does not have full access to the thoughts of anybody but the main character, in this case Evie the Catholic chaplain. The restrictive narrator gives no access to the minds of Victor, the young inmate, or the officer. If we knew the thoughts of these...

...quite nervous. When delivering the news Victor, whom seems to be a good-looking sensible young man, reacts indifferent towards his grandmother’s passing, and is contrary more pursued on redeeming his ill doings. This is shown when Victor asks if he was accepted in the ‘SORRY-course’. As the conversation proceeds, it occurs to Evie that Victor is educated and on the path for re-entering society. She leaves with a feeling of inadequacy, as if she could not reach him through deciphering his character. Or as if the adolescent boy had had superior spiritual insight compared to her. The general themes presented in the text are yearning for freedom, first impressions, judgement of evil in the sense of regret and the use of contrasts. Early in the text the contrast of free and imprisoned is illustrated: “Evie wonders if the shoppers parking their cars or the office workers who...

Save as Many as You Ruin

...within him. Gerard, does not seem to be in contact with his emotions. He has only loved one woman in his life although he has slept with many. The reason for him sleeping with so many women could perhaps be him being promiscuous. When he finds a woman whom he actually falls in love with he still feels an urge to sleep with other women, “Gerard vaguely remembers the feeling of being in love with Laurel and the desire to have sex with Issy.” (p. 5 l. 123-124). Even though he loves Laurel he can not remain faithful. His urge to follow his sexual instinct overpowers him and he is not able to control it – it controls him. The two women we are presented with in the text, Issy and Laurel, have had a very different impact on Gerard. Even though Gerard is not aware of it he is a lot like Issy in some ways; when he tells her that he is in love with someone else and she then has to tell him that she is pregnant, she laughs at first but then cries. Laughter is mostly combined with joy, where crying is often combined with sadness. Here we see a contrast between her feelings, just like Gerard she doesn’t know how to deal with them either. On the other hand we have Laurel who, with her name, is a clear symbol...

The Third Dumpster

...different backgrounds, stories and experiences, and for that reason all individuals behave differently in a social context. In regards to the concepts of assimilation and integration a question of moral unfolds: Is it required to fully adapt to the country’s culture, traditions, behavior and language, and with that forget your origin? In the short story “The third dumpster” the author portrays the concepts of integration and assimilation as a contrast. The short story’s main characters, the brothers Goodwin Lee and Morehouse, are Americans with Chinese heritage. Both brothers have found a balance between identifying as American and Chinese. On the contrary their parents only identify as Chinese even though they both have a US citizenship: “And their parents were Chinese, end of story, as Morehouse liked to say. Meaning that though they had been Americans for fifty years and could no longer belay themselves hand over hand up their apartment stair rail to go to their bedroom, they nonetheless could not go into assisted living because of the food” (p. 2 l. 8-11). A distinct separation between the Chinese culture and American culture is presented, due to the fact that their parents’ Chinese nationality isn’t questioned, as they reject the American and in extension the Western culture. Though both parents have been US citizens for fifty years, it’s clear that they aren’t nor want to be assimilated in the American culture. The Brothers, Goodwin Lee and Morehouse, have different approaches...

Rene Descartes

...Rene Descartes Metaphysics, Epistemology, and Value Theory Asma Naheed Introduction to Philosophy Mr. Ferguson 13 May 2016 Rene Descartes (1596-1650) was a very important philosopher in the 17th century. Many regard to Descartes as the father of modern philosopher. His famous statement "Cogito ero sum" is widely known and studied. He contributed much to mathematics as well as philosophy. What does my philosopher believe is real? One thing my philosopher believes is real is the certainty of the existence of god. René Descartes has an awareness about god. And acknowledges the existence of god. One of Descartes metaphysics is his certainty about god which is examined in his Fifth Mediations “Descartes holds that the idea of God is a true and immutable nature and hence it is not something that can be rejected at all in so far as it is ultimately an innate idea”. His view is similar like mine regarding the belief of god. Though his process for believing in god is quite different then of mine, we both have a strong belief in god. My View on Rene Descartes metaphysics regarding the existence of god is disagreement. Descartes argues that god exists beyond any doubt, but I disagree. My view is not like his because, I believe his proof of good relies mostly on false premises. Descartes argues that god exists but what is the actuality of god he does not answer. An example of this can be illustrated by a student doubting whether or not they will make a good grade on the...

Trouble With Diversity

...provide was not what each one of them possessed but that he referred to them as a “glamourous race” (Michaels p.810). He said this to show a comparison between the rich and poor and the white and not so white. But to make the point clearer he provides the example of a book “The Great Gatsby” to show how race is still apparent in society. In the next section, the author presents the court case Bakke v Board of Regents which took place in 1978. A white student applied and was denied acceptance and he argued that it was a bias decision and that it was based on his race. But in this situation the court ruled in favor of this case because they brought up the point that if the university takes into consideration the race for diversity purposes only then there shouldn’t necessarily be an issue. Meanwhile this case was taking place, racism was prominent because many people did not associate race with diversity. The realization of this is that race has paved out ways for culture, religious, and medical reasons to be considered as diversity. In the third section, Michael explains how people ignore inequality because they are afraid to be labeled as lower...

"Yellow" - Analysis and Interpretation

...Yellow analysis and interpretation A short story by Peter Carty In a contrast to nature mankind has always seemed small. Nature with its dark rivers, gigantic mountains, forests filled with danger and endless oceans. Nature can swallow you in one breath if you let it and can through your life make you scared and make you feel not noticeable and hopeless. Suicide is normally caused by problems like these that a person cannot seem to overcome and either way it’s a desperate act. In the novel Yellow written in 1999 by Peter Carty, a man named Jon is sent to Egypt to write an article about scuba diving. An Italian man named Berto is to teach him on a team containing Jon and another student, Brian. Through the considerations and reflections of this protagonist, Jon, the reader gains information about his fears, problems and inner conflicts, which end up causing his suicide. In this analysis of the story I will focus on characterization of the protagonist, Jon, narrative technique, language, the significance of the setting, symbols and at the ending and at last I will elaborate on themes, draw perspectives to other texts and finally make a conclusion. Through the analysis I’ll focus, among other things, on the question: can nature be tamed, owned and transferred into something that is subject to mankind? The story starts out with no introduction, in other words: in medias res. The reader is thrown directly into the story and that emphasizes that nothing is given to the reader...

...thinks of his own life compared with the many other people who lived before him. The atmosphere in this part of the text also tells us that something is going to happen in Gerard's life. In the beginning he also talks about the past, he talks about his old, English prep teacher Hetherington who won a medal at the Olympics while Adolf Hitler watched, and he talks about the second World War: "Millions were about to be killed as teenage Hetherington crossed the finish line. A few years later, children walked into gas ovens after a long journey from home." - P.1/l.15-17. Just things from the past, which probably is an introduction to when he meets a woman from his past, Laurel. When he thinks about the mannequins, "Gerard thinks of the mannequins. The Gettysburg Address

...1863, four months after one of the Civil Wars bloody fights, the president at that time, Abraham Lincoln, holds a speech in which he encourages the people of America to end the war. Furthermore, he reminds the audience of the ideals on which America was founded, and how the Civil War is threatening them. Last but not least, Lincoln honors the fallen and encourages people to finish their unfinished work. Abraham Lincoln frames his speech in a historical perspective and introduces two of the most important American values already in his first sentence of his speech. “Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” (P. 1, ll. 1-2). With this introduction to his speech, Abraham Lincoln presents two of the fundamental values of America: equality and liberty. He begins his speech saying ‘fourscore and seven years ago’. This is a very noble way of saying ’87 years ago’ and it refers to the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. Combined with the use of...

The atmosphere in the prison intimidates her and she feels uncomfortable being there because of all the noises.  That’s why she treasures whenever the prisoners are out, and she has some quiet time on her own. She is very religious and she likes to use her quiet time to meditate and pray (p.2, l.32). She is a good girl who behaves properly and follows the Bible. Even though the prisoners have done bad things, she is kind to everyone, and tries to understand how the prisoners feel. She even tries to imagine Jesus as being one of the prisoners (p.2, l. 40), and this just shows that she is very good at putting herself in other people’s shoes. In the prison she also helps to run the Enhanced Thinking Skills (p. 3, l.91). She is a kind, genuine person, and she is very nervous when she has to tell Victor that his Nan is dead, because she is scared that he’ll get upset (p. 2, l. 55). Evie is fragile, but she is also a very loving and caring person, and as soon as she sees the young Victor, she imagines him being her son (p.3, l. 75). Victor is very young, so her loving heart immediately feels sorry for him.   Victor is described as a young, good-looking boy (p.3, l. 75). ...girl named Lucy, Gerard lived a hectic “businessman’s” life consisting of constant social events including ladies and uncountable amounts of money. More precisely he lived the Hollywood lifestyle. Back then he also enjoyed the promiscuous life where sex was never the same, “He has slept with many women” (p.2, l.34), but despite of this, what Gerard regrets most from his past is his desire to have sex with Izzy: “Gerard vaguely remembers the feeling of being in love with Laurel and the desire to have sex with Izzy. He knew that other men enjoyed the occasional partner outside of long-term relationships, and he wanted to try it.” (p.6, ll. 123-126) Even though he is genuinely in love, for the first time, with Laurel as the above sentence also explains, he commits a crime, which sooner puts on a show of huge regret and his conscience is still being plagued by this mistake. However, accentuating the mood in the story with constant flashbacks of Gerard’s past, the movement of the snow is being mentioned on several occasions for instance in the beginning: “By the time Gerard leaves the office it has stopped snowing” (p.1, l.1) and later on “It suddenly begins snowing again” (p.2, l.25). The snow influences the perception of the mood, as it coherences with the storyline. Furthermore the snow also has a...

...the short story we meet a chaplain named Evie and a young criminal named Victor Zamora. Evie has to tell Victor Zamora that his Nan died the day before on a hospital, but the meeting with Victor turns out to be a bit strange.
