...When Erin Gruwell was assigned a class full of students who were labeled "at risk," she had no idea the challenges she would face. Many would have balked at what seemed like an insurmountable, Sisyphean task. On their website, the Freedom Writers explain that "on our first day of school, we had only three things in common: we hated school, we hated our teacher, and we hated each other." A novice teacher with big ideas and an even bigger heart, Gruwell refused to allow her students' lives to become self-fulfilling prophecies. By holding them to high standards and presenting them with countless opportunities, Gruwell gave these students a chance to overcome the limitations imposed on them by society. Gruwell encouraged her students to "do something different, something memorable, something powerful and humane." In response to the overwhelming popularity and success of The Freedom Writers Diary, Erin Gruwell established the Freedom Writers Foundation which "promotes acceptance and innovative teaching methods in classrooms around the country." Proceeds from the sale ofThe Freedom Writers Diary go to the Tolerance Education Foundation, which was established to pay for the Freedom Writers' college tuition. Today, teachers and students around the globe can bring the original Freedom Writers into their classrooms via an online video chat. Erin Gruwell now serves as the president of the Freedom Writers Foundation. Her work has been featured on The View, Good Morning America, Book...

...Consider the following four debt securities, which are identical in every characteristic except as noted: W: A corporate bond rated AAA X: A corporate bond rate BBB Y: A corporate bond rated AAA with a shorter time to maturity than bonds W and X Z: A corporate bond rated AAA with the same time to maturity as bond Y that trades in a more liquid market than bonds W, X, or Y. List the bonds in the most likely order of the interest rates (yields to maturity) of the bonds from highest to lowest. Explain your work. The bond with the highest risk is going to be your BBB bond. A BBB bond is rated at a higher risk and will most likely yield the highest interest rates. BBB bonds fall into what is considered to be a lower medium grade bond and is just above the non-investment grade of bonds. The next below in high risk is going to be your AAA rated bond. AAA bonds are very low in risk in nature depending on their yield to maturity. The AAA bond is placed here because we are unaware of the duration of the bond. That is why the next less risky bond is the AAA bond with a shorter time to maturity than W and X. The reason behind this is that the bond has a less likely chance of its value being diminished. The longer the term, the higher the chance there is that something could happen in the market that could destroy the wealth of the bond. The least risky of the bunch is going to be bond Z that trades in a more liquid market than the others. The reason this is less risky is because...

...THE SUBPRIME CREDIT CRISIS AND CONTAGION IN FINANCIAL MARKETS Francis A. Longstaff∗ Abstract. We conduct an empirical investigation into the pricing of subprime assetbacked CDOs and the resulting contagion effects on other markets. Using data for the ABX indexes of subprime CDO prices, we find strong evidence of contagion effects. In particular, we find that contagion effects spread first from lower-rated ABX indexes to higher-rated ABX indexes, and then from the subprime markets to the Treasury bond and stock markets. ABX index returns forecast stock and Treasury bond returns as much as three weeks ahead during the crisis. Furthermore, ABX index shocks are significantly related to contractions in the size of the short-term credit markets and increases in the trading activity of financial stocks over the next several weeks. These results provide support for the hypothesis that financial contagion was spread through liquidity and risk-premium channels. Current version: August 2008. UCLA Anderson School and NBER. I am very grateful for helpful discussions with Joshua Anderson, Vineer Bhansali, Bruce Carlin, Richard Clarida, Rajna Gibson, Rob- ert Gingrich, Hanno Lustig, Alfred Murata, Steve Schulist, and Jiang Wang, and for the comments of seminar participants at New York University, Pimco, and UCLA. ...The interest rate on a debt security is largely determined by the perceived repayment ability of the borrower; higher risks of payment default almost always lead to higher interest rates to borrow capital. The four debt securities that are discussed within this paper are as follows: W: A Corporate bond rated AAA X: A Corporate bond rated BBB Y: A Corporate bond rated AAA with a shorter time of maturity than bonds W and X Z: A Corporate bond rates BBB the same time to maturity as bond Y that trades in a more liquid market than bonds W, X, or Y A grade is given to a bond that indicates their credit quality. Private independent rating services such as Standard & Poor's, Moody's and Fitch provide these evaluations of a bond issuer's financial strength, or it’s the ability to pay a bond's principal and interest in a timely fashion. Bond ratings are expressed as letters ranging from 'AAA', which is the highest grade, to 'C' ("junk"), which is the lowest grade. Different rating services use the same letter grades, but use various combinations of upper- and lower-case letters to differentiate themselves. AAA and AA: High credit-quality investment grade. AA and BBB: Medium credit-quality investment grade. BB, B, CCC, CC, C: Low credit-quality (non-investment grade), or "junk...
