ASSIGNMENT 1 –ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY
The Shawshank Redemption

In 1946, a banker named Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of a double murder, even though he stubbornly proclaims his innocence. He's sentenced to a life term at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman), picks him as the new recruit most likely to crack under the pressure. The ugly realities of prison life are quickly introduced to Andy: a corrupt warden (Bob Gunton), sadistic guards led by Capt. Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown), and inmates who are little better than animals, willing to use rape or beatings to insure their dominance. But Andy does not crack: he has the hope of the truly innocent, which (together with his smarts) allow him to prevail behind bars. He uses his banking skills to win favor with the warden and the guards, doing the books for Norton's illegal business schemes and keeping an eye on the investments of most of the prison staff. In exchange, he is able to improve the prison library and bring some dignity and respect back to many of the inmates, including Red. Based on a story by
Stephen King, The Shawshank Redemption was the directorial debut of screenwriter Frank Darabont.

After a long discussion, we have agreed that Andy’s act in helping Warden Norton to launder his money is ethical because he has to follow the orders given in order to keep himself from being hurt and to survive in the prison. For example, he was sexually assaulted by ‘The Sisters’ when he was in the prison and he was also physically assaulted by Captain
Byron. Therefore, it is very logic for Andy to help the warden in the sense of humanity although it is not right to view his actions from the angle of law.

Moreover, Andy’s act to help the warden is ethical because he can help many by doing so although it may be wrong

...Elements of fiction “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker The Color Purple is an epistolary novel by American author Alice Walker which won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction. It was later adapted into a film and musical of the same name. This novel is making arguments on the topic “racism and sexism”. The Color Purple is an extraordinary novel that’s full of surprises. Taking place mostly in rural Georgia, the story focuses on female black life in the 1930s in the southern United States, addressing numerous issues including their exceedingly low position in American social culture. Alice Walker’s biography [pic] Alice Walker was born on February 9, 1994, in Eatonton, Georgia. Living in the racially divided South, Walker attended segregated schools. She graduated from her high school as the valedictorian of her class. With the help of a scholarship, she was able to go to Spelman College in Atlanta. Later, she switched to Sarah Lawrence College in New York City. While at Sarah Lawrence, Walker visited Africa as part of a study-abroad program. She graduated in 1965—the same year that she published her first short story. After college, Walker worked as a social worker, teacher and lecturer. She became active in the Civil Rights Movement, fighting for equality for all African Americans. Her experiences informed her first collection of poetry, Once, which was published in 1968. All these values (µ, Ai , ij ) are UNKNOWN! Our GOAL is to test if the hypothesis A1 = A2 = A3 = 0 is plausible1 . ...#1 Honesty and Integrity Great leaders create an organizational culture built on these two core values and hold all employees accountable to them. Without honesty and integrity as fundamental cornerstones of an organization, they will rarely succeed long term. And creating such a culture starts at the top of the organization. Everyone watches the leader and takes their cues as to what is acceptable behavior. Effective leaders must also be trustworthy. They are recognized for always telling the truth and for practicing the highest standards of ethical conduct. Subordinates believe them and do not feel that their leader has hidden agendas. Good leaders readily admit their mistakes. Although difficult to do, this shows they are honest and can be trusted. Great leaders show they have the best interests of the company in mind rather than their own personal gain, by making good on their commitments. They hold themselves accountable for their actions and decisions, and encourage their employees to do likewise. Transparency is also important, even when there is bad news to share. Employees know when things are not going well. Trying to put a positive spin without acknowledging the organization’s difficulties will cost the leader his or her credibility. Sharing both the bad and the good creates deeper trust and respect. #2 Outstanding Self Awareness A leader must understand their own strengths and weaknesses. All of us have faults and instinctive behaviors that...

...Resolving legal disputes in international transactions has some issues. There are three choices a company has when looking into a legal dispute. First choice is to take legal actions, which can hurt the future business relationships between a country and the business. This option is perfectly legal by the terms of the contract set up before the two decided to do business. The second choice is to not take any legal action, which hurts the company financially and also defeats the purpose of the contract if there is no punishment for the breach of contract. The third choice is to find the alternative for both parties to benefit. It will save the party breaching the contract from going to court and the other party to regain the financial losses it would have had if it decided not to take any actions. This is the preferable action to take because the relationship is not completely hurt with a chance of future business. Something to think about, taking legal actions will hurt the business partner financially and will hurt the partnership for future business. Sublicensing has some factors to consider, like the time and cost involved, and also ensuring the quality standards. The foreign authorities can also play a role in determining if sublicensing is the best options for the country because the generic product would be cheaper and more affordable for the public. When laws conflict locally and abroad, the contract should prevail because that is the agreement the partnership is based...

...CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE INTRODUCTION Rationale of the Study The ship is a unique environment that it is not only a place of work but at the same time a home to seafarers working on board. Working on ships entails seafarers’ absence for a long period away from home. This situation and other conditions on board such as the weather and the crewing arrangement may compound the situation of seafarers aboard ship. This results into various psychological experiences that could lead to psychosocial problems such as stress, alcohol, tobacco and drugs, HIV/Aids, and violence, consequently, affecting their health, well-being and effectiveness in work. Each of these factors is correlated with each other that one problem may either cause another or be the result or effect of another problem. This greatly affects to the cadets/cadetes in the maritime world who are new to this profession Towards this end, the selected students of the NSA 16th batch 4th year cadets conducted this exploratory study to generate information on the sources of stress of RCPO cadets on board ships and the coping mechanisms employed to minimize the impact of stress. This information will then be used to highlight the good practices/strategies in managing stress on board with the end view of boosting the quality of RCPO cadets in the international labour market. Specifically, the study pursued the following objectives: 1. Determine the sources of stress of RCPO cadets; 2....

...MGT 218 Chapter 4: An investigation into how Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) and Lean concepts could improve the effectiveness of Sheffield University and give them a strategic edge. 4.1 Introduction The University of Sheffield (TUoS) is currently among the world’s top higher learning institutions, largely due to its high quality staff members and modern infrastructure. To maintain and improve its status among the world’s elite, it is fundamental for the University to understand and implement Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) to its existing processes. BPR can be defined as the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service, and speed (Hammer & Champy, 1990). This chapter aims to dwell deeper into how changing or adding on to existing processes and systems can benefit the University and its stakeholders 4.2 The Current State Of The University’s Systems and Processes In the past, many universities have restructured the way they ran their business. One good example would be the Montana State University in the United States, which in 2006 reviewed their old financial and administrative processes and subsequently identified areas for improvement. As a result, they managed to increase overall efficiency and eliminate unnecessary costs. The University of Sheffield currently runs SAP software, and have been doing so since 2007. One...
