...Note : Both the sections are compulsory. Section I CASE I : BANKING ON RELATIONSHIP The birth of ABC Bank took place after the RBI issued guidelines for the entry of new private sector banks in January 1993. Subsequently, the promoter of ABC Bank sought permission to establish a commercial bank and retained KPMG, a management consultant of international repute, to prepare the groundwork for establishing a commercial bank. The Reserve Bank of India conveyed its approval in principle to establish ABC Bank on February 11, 1994. Thereafter, the Bank was incorporated under The Companies Act in September 1994. The bank started its operations in November 1995. The ABC Bank was promoted by the tenth largest development bank in the world, which had a magnificent record of promoting world-class institutions in India. The promoter was a strategic investor in a plethora of institutions, which had revolutionized the Indian financial markets. Keeping in line with its policy of leveraging technology to drive its business, ABC Bank deployed Finacle, the e-age banking solution from Infosys to consolidate its position, meet challenges and quickly seize new business opportunities. The entire Finacle rollout was remarkable, considering the fact that it was implemented across all branches in a record timeframe of 5 months. Finacle provided the critical technology platform to propel the bank’s operations with new thrust and direction. The bank also implemented Kondor – a treasury...

Can E-Banking Services Be Profitable?

...CAN E-BANKING SERVICES BE PROFITABLE? Olga Luštšik[1] Abstract For the last few years European banks have spent billions of euros into new electronic channels. But after some years of excitement banks long-waited sky-rocketing profits from this area didn’t occur. Estonian banks have also invested in expanding and improving the IT systems and a number of new e-banking services have been developed. Until recent time, most of the pricing decisions for e-bank services were made based on a gut feeling as current financial management information systems didn’t support such analysis. In the article author explores the implementation techniques of Activity Based Costing (ABC) in banking sector on example of an Estonian bank in order to analyze the cost structure for traditional and electronic channel transactions. The article shows how it is possible to implement ABC in banking sector and proofs empirically that electronic channels provide cost saving for banks and for bank clients. JEL classification numbers: G21, L11, L86, M40, O31 Keywords: e-banking, profitability, activity based costing 1. INTRODUCTION A few years ago no self-respecting financial consultant would travel without it: the bar chart showing that the marginal cost of Internet banking transactions was a tiny fraction of the cost of branch banking. It was the chart that launched dozens of stand-alone Internet banks. As a result, European banks have poured billions of euros into building...

...the Eye of the Beholder Abstract The literature on Activity Based Costing (ABC) tends to define the ‘success’ of an ABC system in relation to the decision-making and strategy formulating opportunities it provides based on the ‘logic’ or technical attributes of ABC (Shields, 1995; Malmi, 1997). This paper argues that there is a logic of ABC and tries to identify and illustrate how people relate to, misunderstand and still ‘appropriate’ this logic and start “talking accounting”. This paper shows that the ABC system implemented in this organisation did indeed provide information for decision-making and did to some extent support the logic of ABC. The paper also shows how this knowledge was emergent, the logic was articulated, but not fully understood and it was only when the system was implemented that many attributes of the system were recognised and, in some cases misunderstood. The paper argues that the ‘success’ of this particular ABC system was dependent on the organisational context, and the changing context as well as the logic. This is reflected in the change in attitudes, awareness and understanding of costs in the department where it was implemented. Key words: Activity Based Costing, financial services, and organisational change. 2 Introduction This paper examines the introduction of an Activity Based Costing (ABC) system in a UK Clearing Bank. The development and implementation of the ABC system is traced...

Title

...Activity-based costing (ABC) provides more meaningful information about the drivers of costs, the activities performed in a firm, and the relationship between costs and products, customers, markets, and segments. In addition to supplying more detailed and better cost and profitability information, an ABC analysis enables managers to evaluate processes from an activity viewpoint, leading to identification of non value-adding activities and process inefficiencies. ABC does not change overall profitability in a firm; it better aligns cost assignment to the causes of those costs. With better information, better decisions can be made in a firm to improve profitability—this is the power of ABC. • • • Introduction Cost allocation in firms can provide misleading information about the profitability of products, product lines, customers, and markets. Traditional cost allocation practices allocate all manufacturing overhead costs using a single driver such as direct labor hours, direct labor dollars, or machine hours. Sales-related costs are typically ignored. While technically accurate, in most complex organizations a single overhead cost driver is not sufficient to accurately assign the pool of overhead costs to the products that are being produced or the customers that are being served. Many firms—from manufacturing to medical and healthcare to banking and financial services to hospitality and not-for-profit organizations—have benefited from designing and implementing ABC allocation systems...

The major development of mass media during the last century is the internet, smart phones, and social networks. What we started with was the oral and written eras in communication. This was the alphabet and written words threw teachers and poets. Then we had commutation and the creation and use of symbol systems that convey information and meaning, like languages, Morse code, and motion pictures. Cultural industries and channels of communication that produce and distribute songs, novels, TV shows, newspapers, movies, internet services, video games and other cultural products to large numbers of people.
