...Abduction The short story, “Abduction”, is about a boy whose sister is a control freak. The special thing about this text is how it’s being told. It’s not from the boy’s point of view but from a third person’s, the narrator’s. I can see that in the way the cha¬rac¬ters’ feelings and thoughts are described to the readers. Furthermore, I think that the narrator is a sibling to the boy, I base this on line 35, page 1, where the narrator says: “He’d been born late in our parents’ mar¬riage and was much younger than she was”. “Our parents” means that they are also the narrator’s parents. This short story starts with an introduction, where the narrator tells “I wanted to do her in”, and later on we get to know that the narrator wants to hurt the woman Ann, who is the boy’s elder sister. Actually, the text starts in media res, and I personally felt that the text had a strong influence on me as a reader from the very beginning; For example strong words and sentences as: “I reckoned that even if I did get caught it would be worth it”. Ann is characterized as a good example of an old-fashioned studios schoolgirl who loves children. She is educated as a doctor, specialised in paediatrics. She lives in London, and according to herself, that’s the only right place to live. There¬fore, her younger brother must join her and live with her in London, she thinks. She almost kidnapped him because of her obsession by London. Ann’s little brother started studying at a media college, even though...

...Abduction Around the world, people are abducted. Some for money, some to give the abductor a rush or a satisfaction. Lives are ruined by abductions, and some people will not be able to live a normal life. There have been cases all over the world where people have been kidnapped and been incarcerated in for example a basement for years. And after being escaped, they live in fear of the next person walking by, will abduct her or him to satisfy them selves. Another kind of abduction is what I would call a volunteered abduction where a person is convinced that is as in the text “abduction” is a good idea to move to London. But as seen the short story, written by Shelagh Delaney, it doesn’t turn out that well, and the “victim” ends up wanting to go back to when things were as before. “Abduction” written by Shelagh Delaney. The text “abduction” is about a girl called Ann, who after living her hole childhood in Manchester moves to the big city of London, to have a great job, and live her dream. She gets a wonderful job, but she is missing something, so she convinces her brother to come stay with her in London. He moves in with her, gets a great allowance, and learns a lot in the field of sex, drugs and alcohol. When he grows older he marries and have kids with a girl called Marianne. When this doesn’t work out, gets into a alcohol abuse. He ends up wanting to get away from all this, and go back to the time where he lived with his parents and his sister wasn’t pulling him...

...Abduction By Mia Christiansen 1) Abduction is a short story written by Shelagh Delaney in 2002. From the beginning the story takes place in Manchester, but the scene changes to Kensington in London and tells us about a woman named Ann, the main character. The title of the story Abduction describes the story very well. Ann “abducts” her younger brother, who has just left school to live with her in London. He was only 16 years old when Ann took him from their parents. She has high expectations of him like a mother. In general she acts as if he was her own child. The story is told by an unknown narrator, who is a part of the story. It is told in the past tense. We are introduced to three characters: the main character Ann, her younger brother and the narrator. Ann is the oldest child in the family. She is a typical older sister. She is described as clever, independent, very self-assured, and proud. She is very successful and focuses on education and job. She left her home town and moved to London as soon as the opportunity came up. You can see this in the text: “When the best job opportunity, working in a London children's hospital, came along, she couldn't get out of Manchester quick enough” (l. 30, p. 1). Ann loves children and she likes working as paediatrician. She has a good job and a big house in Kensington and she spends her time looking at cultural things like theatres and art galleries. Life she had always wanted. Ann’s younger brother is the youngest in the family...

...Nowadays, success, a happy family, a good career and material wealth equals a happy life. Some people lose themselves in the middle of the search for all these things. They are so focused on the creation of this identity that they forget, or even try to repress, their real identity and roots. They are so determined to create this new happiness-recipe identity that they forget their real wishes, roots and personality. The short story “Abduction” by Shelagh Delaney deals with this subject. We encounter a very unusual relationship between Ann and her younger brother. Their living together is normal; however, the way Ann brought him to live with her in London is noteworthy. She told their parents that she was taking him – 16 years old at the time - to live at her home; and simply did it without any sort of refusal. You would think that they would have objected in some way, but she was able to convince them. Yet, the odd part is how she treats her brother. She gives him allowance, she pays everything for him, she makes sure he is taken care of job-wise etc. She acts as if she was his mother and strangely enough, as the following line indicates “But he knew his sister expected something of him…” (p. 2, l. 51), he is responding as if he in fact is her son. This view is already put forth by his wife who directly asks him if she actually is his mother in disguise as a sister. First of all we are told in the early stages of the story about Ann’s youth and some of her former decisions:...

...Khanthee Thao Anatomy & Physiology Dr. Maridy Troy April 17, 2009 Volleyball Spike The deltoids or shoulders consist of three heads. The anterior heads are on the front of the arm. The medial heads are the sides of the arm, and the posterior heads are on the rear or back side of the arm. All three heads of the deltoids are attached to the humerus. Two of the muscles are attached to the humerus by the collar bone. They are the anterior deltoids and the medial deltoids. The posterior is attached to the humerus by the scapula (Marieb, 2006). Each head of the deltoids are responsible for different movements. The anterior deltoids move the arms out front, in a position called flexion. The medial deltoids move the arms out to the sides of the body which is known as lateral. And the posterior deltoids help move the arms to the dorsal side of the body. This is known as hyper-extension (Marieb, 2006). These movements, such as hyperextension, flexion, and lateral are important to volleyball spikes. The flexion position moves the arm upwards to help assist the vertical jump. The medial helps assist the anterior deltoids. The muscle that helps the prime mover is known as synergist (Marieb, 2006, p.196). During this position the posterior deltoids are known as the antagonist, because it is the opposing muscle of the prime mover. The posterior deltoids is responsible for moving the arms downwards during the swing. During...

...Abduction “Abduction” is a story published by Comma press in 2002, written by Shelagh Delaney. The story deals with topics like family, standards, love and expectations. The short story is about a woman named Ann, who takes her 16-year old brother with her to London, where she has bought a house in Kensington. She spoils him rotten, by giving him allowances, clothing and a lot more. Ann takes on the roll as being a mother for her younger brother, and it all leads to a fatal ending, where he winds up dying of alcoholism. The title “Abduction” adds up with how Ann abducted her brother from their parents in Manchester. The story is told in past tense, by a narrator who is unknown. Although we never get to know who the narrator is, it seems to be one of Ann’s other siblings since there in the text I written:”He’d been born late in our parents’ marriage and was much younger than she was”. But later in the story there is written: “He had learned it from his father” which shows us that the story has switched narrators, and no longer called it “our parents” but “his father”. The first narrator of the story is thinking about killing Ann because he/she is so furious at her, and probably blames her for what has happened to the brother. Here you can see that the narrators’ personal opinion is shown in the text. The story doesn’t have a rich vocabulary, its “everyday” language. It’s light and easy to read. While reading the story, the reader always stays at a distance. Although in the...

...We all know what it means to be a part of a family and whatever comes along with it. It has its bad side sand its good sides. You don’t choose your own family like you choose your own friends and therefore conflicts among family members will be hard to avoid. Of course most families make it work but we also see families where things are out of control. Where the love between the family members is shown in away that doesn´t help anyone and where jealousy and hate take over. You may ask yourself if love really can kill. The short story “Abduction” is about a boy and his family and how things didn't work out at all.The conflict of the story is between a boy and his older sister. What is important is that the story is not told from the boy or his sister’s point of view but from someone standing outside. There are hints that indicate that the narrator is a sibling to the boy and his sister.”He’d been born late in my parents’ marriage and was much younger than she was”(l. 35). It becomes clear that the narrator has got the same parents as the boy and his sister and that the main character´s sister, Ann, is older than him. ”Being only a few years older I remembered those days too but my recollections were a bit different”. From these quotes it is clear that the three persons are related - they are siblings. There are other quotes though which contradict this. “Like most teenagers he hadn't much confidence in his mother and farther and Anne, his sister, had all the answers.” Instead of...

...The Abduction of Europa Green/Roman Mosaics during the Third Century A.D. were one of the most common attributes of private homes and communal buildings during the rein of the Greek/Roman Empire. Nonetheless, mosaics are not just aesthetic works of fine art but merely are an indispensable memoir of substantial myths, stories, and legends of the past, whether it may be depicting a heroic scene of one of the greatest battles of time to a royal celebration of some sort. The intricate details and time put into creating such a piece of work reveal so much about the Greek/Roman culture. They revere and honour all the hardship they went through and then develop these fascinating life changing events into works of art, which, we now read about in books or view in museums. One specific work of art, which, portrays so much is The Abduction of Europa mosaic, now placed in the National Museum of Beirut. Nevertheless, most Greek/Roman mosaics were used and created to strengthen and support the Greek/Roman social structure and their societal reputation in the empire. They were not only created for societal purposes, but also to keep consequential evocations alive throughout history. The mosaics of the Greek/Roman culture have been said to be influenced vastly from Hellenistic art - some of the most common subject matters artists liked to capture and portray were scenes of the sea and Greek myths, such as Gods and Goddesses and the encounters they endured. This explains clearly, the mosaic...

...and conflict countries, as politically motivated militias, organized crime and the drugs mafia fill the vacuum left by government."[21] In 2009, the Los Angeles Times named Phoenix, Arizona[29] as America's kidnapping capital, reporting that every year hundreds of ransom kidnappings occur there, virtually all within the underworld associated with human and drug smuggling from Mexico, and often done as a way of collecting unpaid debts. Other major U.S. cities that are hotbeds for kidnappings are Detroit, Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston, and Chicago.[29] Many of them are done by major street gangs near tourist attractions. During the year 1999 in the United States, 203,900 children were reported as the victims of family abductions and 58,200 of non-family abductions. However, only 115 were the result of "stereotypical" kidnaps (by someone unknown or of slight acquaintance to the child, held permanently or for ransom).[30] In the past, and presently in some parts of the world (such as southern Sudan), kidnapping is a common means used to obtain slaves and money through ransom. In less recent times, kidnapping in the form of...

...This is a reality of our living here in this culture. Americans have a greater chance of falling prey to a violent crime than most western nations. Specifically I want to write about abduction here and abroad. The United states citizens end up missing quite a lot. The statistics show as one of the highest committed crimes domestically. According to one study 2,300 people are reported missing every day in the United States. It seams as a relentless parade of missing persons. I believe that number to be inflated so I wont go to lengths to support it or site it, however I do think that we as citizens here are unaware of how dangerous it is to live here. On the up side we are much more vigilant at perusing the missing persons cases. I would...

...Reducing Risks of Child Abductions at Nightingale Community Hospital A sentinel event in the hospital is an unexpected occurrence that involves or poses a high risk for death, serious physical injury or severe psychological damage (Joint Commission, 2013). Incidences that lead to adverse outcomes necessitate immediate attention and plans of actions to prevent recurrences. The Joint Commission, a non-profit certifying body for healthcare organizations, sets safety and quality standards for hospitals. It requires hospitals to conduct root cause analyses (RCA), implement processes to reduce risks of recurrence and evaluate the effectiveness of those processes for sentinel events (Joint Commission, 2013). Nightingale Community Hospital (NCH) had a child abduction sentinel event. The legal guardianship of a child who had surgery was not communicated to various departments of the hospital. The parents of the child were divorced and the mother had legal custody. The child was discharged home with her father. Fortunately, law enforcement located the child at her father’s home and no charges were filed. National statistics show that 9% of missing children are abducted by family members and 3% are kidnapped by non-family members (Polly Klass Foundation, n.d.). Less than 1% of abducted children are victims of homicide, physical abuse and/or sexual assault (Polly Klass Foundation, n.d.). Although these percentages are very low, the impact is great! This means a child who is abducted...

...The Mystery Behind the Spiritual Alien Agenda Beryl King 12 March 2012 The Search for Earth-like Planets December 5, 2011 must have been an exciting day for astronomers all over the world as NASA announced to the public the discovery of an Earth-like planet potentially able to support life. The planet, 2.4 times the size of the Earth, is six hundred light-years away in what astronomers call the “Goldilocks Zone”, an area in which a planet has an ideal temperature because of its distance from a star. It orbits around a star similar to the sun of the Earth, and the temperature of its surface is habitable at 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists are hopeful that this planet might possess water and land, but they are not sure as of the moment if the majority of it is made up of solid, liquid or gas (Bloxham). Kepler 22-b is just one of the extrasolar planets observed by NASA that has a probability to be inhabited by extraterrestrial life forms. Since 1960, NASA has funded different exobiology projects, including Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), in hopes that astronomers can find evidences of life in outer space. Thinking that extraterrestrials would likely leave something behind to signal other intelligent beings during their exploration, astronomers of SETI previously tried to detect interstellar probes to be able send messages back to them, but until now, none have been discovered. Despite this, scientists working on SETI have not given up, focusing more on...

... First they have to deal with the fact that their child is now gone and then go through the stressful process of trying to find them and get them back. Ask any parent of an abducted child and they will say that the wait is the hardest. Not knowing whether or not their child is alive, waiting for that phone call that will decide the rest of their lives for them. That is a phone call many of the parents get. Most abducted children do not return home, having begun a new life, if it was a parent or relative abductor, or being abused and killed by an unfamiliar abductor.
