The morning before Easter Sunday, June Kashpaw was roaming around a street in oil boomtown, North Dakota. She was killing time before her bus arrived for home, but as she was walking, a man inside the Rigger Bar caught the eye of June and invited her inside the bar. June entered the bar without hesitation and saw him peeling colorful eggs. He ordered a beer for her and then gave June the egg which he peeled for her. June quickly ate the egg as she was hungry and had no money to spend on food. The last of her money was spent on the ticket she bought. The man kept giving her eggs and grabs her arms. The man wants her to forget the bus and come with him to have a good time. June also had a husband, but they were divorced and according to June, “if she got desperate he would still send money” (Erdrich 3). Her ex-husband’s name was, Gordie. June and the man went to another bar and she found out that the man was a mud engineer named, Andy. She then started to think about a mud engineer who she heard about was killed by a pressurized hose, which shot up into his stomach and taking out his insides. Nector and his brother Eli used to do some hunting for some birds and Nector would sell what they shoot in the town. On Friday evening Nector was on his way to sell the two goose he had on him at the town. Nector claimed that Nanapush was his true love. He walks down the street thinking about Nanapush and then witnesses Maries running down the street and when she tried to pass Nector, he grabbed her by the arm and saw a pillowcase that said, Sacred Heart Convent. Nector thinks that there might be golden chalices underneath the pillowcase and he thought that if he returned it, he might be given a reward for it.
