...The Morality of Abortion The topic of abortion and it’s morality has been an extremely passionate debate for some time now. While many are against it, there are also many that support it for a variation of reasons. The question of the morality of abortion is a main focal point in these opposing views. Although both sides provide applicable reasoning for their stance, particular circumstances provide a slight edge for those that are pro-abortion. A variation of circumstances, including but not limited to, victims of rape, health concerns for the mother of the unborn child, and at times even financial woes easily make the morality of abortion morally acceptable. In the following, these situational circumstances will be discussed, explored, and supported to provide evidence of the moral standpoint from which each circumstance stands on. Abortion has been a practice for many decades now. “The practice of abortion, the medical removal of a fetus, has been known since at least ancient times. Various methods have been used to perform an abortion, including the administration of abortifacient herbs, the use of sharpened implements, the application of abdominal pressure, and other techniques.” (Devereux, 1967). This practice has been used for many reasons for many years, some morally acceptable, some not. A particular reason that most find morally acceptable is abortion from a survivor of rape. The morality factors normally included in any argument against abortion and it’s...

...Ethics: Morality of Abortion Abortion refers to the termination of pregnancy and expulsion of an embryo or a fetus that is incapable of surviving on its own. It remains one of the most controversial topics in today’s society. It has raised a lot of heated debate from different quarter’s right from religious leaders, philosophers, politicians, lawyers and the general public (Mohr, J. C. (1978). Many people feel that abortion is wrong and claim that it amounts to the murder of a helpless baby who has not had a chance of living and functioning on its own (Luker, K. (1984). Those people who support it believe that it is a woman’s right to choose whatever happens to her body. If she feels she is incapable of bringing a child up, she should not...

...Theology III: Morality Mr. Hernandez May 1, 2015 Abortion After the Supreme Court's sweeping abortion decisions in 1973, striking down most of the then-existing state legislation restricting abortion, a conservative reaction began taking place. Ever since 1973 if a mother kills an unborn child before its born for any reason she wants, she will not be charged for killing since the Supreme Court made it legal. Does the Catholic Church believe its right? Worldwide there are 46 million abortions a year meaning 115,000 per day. The pregnant woman who is poor seeks abortion because she can not take care of herself and the children she has. Most of the pregnant women helped by the Women's Medical Fund have children—many with two or...

...Abortion: Where Has Morality Gone? In today’s society, often times many people do not even consider the question of morality before taking certain actions, because the subject of morality has become a gray area in which morality can scarcely be defined. For instance, Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines morality as "the quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct” (Webster Online). However, everyone has a different opinion of right and wrong. There are approximately 46 Million abortions per year worldwide about 1.37 Million abortions here in US (abortionno.org). This difference of opinion on what is moral causes many disputes such as in the topic of abortion. Some people believe it is a woman’s prerogative to choose whether or not to have a child, while still many others believe it is “morally” wrong to have an abortion. On the other hand, there are moderates who disagree with the idea or the morality of abortion, but agree that there are certain circumstances that should give the woman the option. Since abortion is essentially the killing of an unborn child, why are women who abort not convicted as murderers, just as women who kill their children face such charges? Morality should be a standard at all times and abortion should be no exception. In fact, abortion is destroying the life of a child; therefore, it should be considered morally wrong, except when extenuating circumstances leave no other choice for the woman. Abortion...

...Thinking | Should Abortion legalized | HONORAY ARD | | Nuwanthi Kaushalya Sudharshan | 4/29/2016 | There are variations within each group depending on how liberal or conservative one’s opinions are, some individuals who are pro-life believe that in cases of rape or incest abortion should be allowed, and some pro-choice groups favor waiting periods and other restrictions on abortion. They only want women to have control over their bodies and futures. Therefore, contrary to popular media portrayals of the debate between pro-life and pro-choice groups, there is not really a clear line between the two sides of the argument for many. No matter which side you have personally taken. It is important to understand what the opposing position believes. The more you know about the arguments in favor of or against abortion, the better prepared you will be if you must make this type of decision regarding your own pregnancy. The proceeding procedure and elaborates some of the irrational argumentations or logical fallacies that associated with traditional and effective abortion strategies. Recently, there are many controversial topics in this world, and abortion is one of them. So I choose to talk about should abortion be legal. In this essay, I'm going to talk about pros and cons of abortion. It was not a big problem before; however, recently the number of abortions increases rapidly. In some countries, abortion is legalized and in some country abortion is treated as a crime...

...Abortion Crystal Estell EN1320 Assignment 2.2 Abortion is one of the most controversial moral issues of our age. Although pro-choice and pro-life arguments centering on the morality of the issue are already well stated, the other more practical arguments on this subject have been underreported. I. What is an abortion? A. Why would a person decide to abort? 1. Is it right to be pro-life or pro-choice and then why. 2. Who should make this decision? B. Or should the law be kept out completely and leave it up to the parents, or maybe just to the mother. II. Abortion is legal in the US and many other countries. A. ...Maxwell Husband St. Joseph’s University Moral Foundations T/TR 8:30-9:45 “Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice” Abortion is and forever will be a very controversial topic of discussion. It has been debated for years whether it is morally right or wrong. Abortion is a unique subject in that it involves not only morality but also a large amount of theology, emotion, and law. It is also unique because it forces people to choose one side or the other, there is a very small gray area when it comes to this debate, and the side that I will fall on in this essay is the pro-choice side. In this essay I will attempt prove that abortion is not murdering an innocent fetus and that the arguments for pro-choice are stronger than the ones for pro-life. The main point of disagreement between the two sides is what constitutes life, when does human life actually begin? I believe to construct a sound argument this issue must be examined first. I will then go on to cover other various pro-choice points such as a women’s right to choose, the quality of life for the potential child, and the extreme circumstances that will disprove the notion that abortion is morally wrong. As stated in my opening paragraph, the key issue in the case of abortion is determining the status of the fetus in the sense of its humanity. It is my belief that a fetus does not qualify as a human. I agree with Warren when she states that “human being” is a term that is not often distinguished, she suggests that there are two...

...‘Abortion is immoral.’ – Do you agree? Abortion is the deliberate termination of a foetus. Some people may argue that it is a foetus; however some may disagree and say that it is a baby. People have different views on abortion, some may say that abortion is immoral – this means that it is wrong in all circumstances or an absolute morality – this also means wrong in all circumstances. However, other people may believe abortion is moral – this means peoples beliefs on what is right or wrong or relative morality – this means it is only right in some circumstances. The law states that abortion is a relative morality because it only allows abortion to continue in certain circumstances, the circumstances are: the mental or physical health of the woman or her existing children will suffer if the pregnancy continues or the child, if born would be physically or mentally handicapped. Alternatively, ‘The Abortion Act’ that began in 1967 may be performed legally if two or more doctors agree. The law on abortion in 1967 had no time limit but under normal circumstances, the pregnancy should not have been passed the 28th week. On the other hand, in the year 1990 another law had been made this was called ‘The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act’. As for the 1967 act except that the time limit was reduced to 24 weeks, this law stated that abortion should only be legal if abnormalities have been detected which are physical or mental you could have an abortion up until birth (after 24 weeks)...

...What is wrong with abortion. Abortion is an on-going phenomenon that has been shaping the world for many generations, breaking up families, disappointing religions, and has psychological distress; basically, it's the "removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order end a pregnancy” (Abortion). Abortion is tragic because it's a form of murder, it goes against religious teachings, and it avoids responsibility. In the Hills like White Elephants, the theme was about abortion, we examined how two people were affected by phenomenon or subject. The man and woman were set on getting an abortion, but since the man kept on pestering the women about the subject, she started getting mixed feelings about if she should get an abortion or keep the...

...Sandel describes Aristotle’s theory as solely purpose, what is the purpose of an object, action or ideal (Sandel 184-207). This does not include the intent one has in using or performing these as in glory or pleasure even though these may be a side effect of the performance (Sandel 192-195). What is the purpose of abortion? Abortion is a way to end pregnancy (Abortion). Aristotle would disagree with abortion though. Abortion is the counter of a much longer used action. Being pregnant is for the sole purpose of reproducing, which has been around for thousands of years. It is what makes a living thing, a living thing. If humans choose to not reproduce than there goes the population. S Aristotle’s, Kant’s, Rawls’, and Haidt’s theories all disagree...

...Claims PRO team 1 Abortions The social media are talking more about abortions. They believe that it’s a decision that should not be argued why women would want an abortion. With the evolving moral standards of society, abortions are becoming more and more justified. Abortions, the practice of removing a fertilized egg from a mother has become a controversial issue in American society, but should be generally supported because you don’t know exactly why women want an abortion or what happened to where she cannot conceive this baby. Abortion advocates must think the American people are fools. They claim the issue is not the morality of abortion, but "who decides--the woman or the state? “Most Americans favor stiff penalties for rapists. Clearly, laws against rape don't let the government decide who gets raped. Instead, these laws indicate that the government has decided rape is an unacceptable practice. Rapists disagree, but the rest of us decided to impose our morality on them. That is what laws are all about. I do not agree that getting an abortion is wrong. Those who refute abortion claim that it is the murder of a helpless baby who has not yet had the chance to live and function as a human being. However, the debate opposite it is just as fervent: it is a woman’s right to choose what happens to her body, and if she decides that she is not capable of bringing a child into this world, than she shouldn’t be forced to out of nature. Where do we draw the line between humane...

...Abortion: A Womans Right To Reproductive Freedom A woman’s Right to Reproductive Freedom “One of the things that makes humans different from other animals is that we are not completely governed by instincts, but have the freedom to make choices” (CCC 9). By nature Humans tend to take different stands in matters that require personal opinions. The controversy of opposite and conflicting feelings about abortion is centuries old. The word “murder” is often used by many pro-lifers to describe abortion. The American Heritage College dictionary defines murder as- premeditated, unlawful killing of one human being by another. But when pro-choice activists support abortions due to unwanted pregnancies, the activists are not rallying behind the idea of sexual incompetence. Rather, they are supporting the idea that women have the right to choose what to do with their own bodies, especially when certain situations such as congenital defects, rape, and financial situation are justifiable reasons for the act. Anti-abortionists have numerous reasons for their beliefs, many of which are attached to their religious ideals, defending the sanctity of human life. They believe that human life commences at conception and that the death of that fetus resembles the murder of an innocent human being. They believe that no one has the power to take command of another’s life, mainly an infant that is dependent on others for survival during the initial stages of life. In addition to the...

What is applied ethics? 4. Given the time we have left in the semester, we’re going to focus on only two example issues: • Whether or not we are morally obligated to help the less fortunate (especially those in other nations) • Whether or not abortion is morally wrong 5. Why we haven’t spent more time on this: • Often results in gridlocked or endless discussions • Having some prior knowledge of some normative theories helps give a framework for discussion • Brings in issues that are not philosophical E.g., a discussion about whether or not the death penalty is morally OK may require sociological information about its effectiveness, etc. B. Suggestions for having good discussions 1. Abortion is a very emotional and charged issue - Students are bound to have strong, conflicting opinions. - Many students may have been personally affected. 2. To avoid a shouting match, it’s best to try to respect everyone’s opinion. 3. Focus on the arguments and not the people giving them: (a) Even if you are pro-life, you may agree that a certain argument against abortion is not sound. (b) May agree with those on the other side about what the most...

...Ethical theory defines what is perceived to be right and what is wrong, while ethical practice suggest that one’s environment and cultural beliefs determine who one will react in any given situation. The question how do we as a society decide what is morally right or wrong in moral “free choice” (Mosser, 2010)? Morals are unique to each person, culture, religious belief and environment. Ethical practice is defined by the diversity within each society, where no to people are alike. Morals don’t define ethics, ethics define morality. Abortion an age old ethical debate between moral right choice and wrong choice, why? To evaluate abortion with ethics, we must first understand the argument from all perspectives. What is the debate reason abortion is so fiercely argued in past and present generations? Abortion is the term to define the choice to terminate a woman’s pregnancy. Unitarian view, which is the view that relativist challenge. Utilitarian view suggest that abortion is not wrong because its selfish and benefits the mother not the unborn fetus, this is what Unitarians refer to as :ethical egoism”(Mosser,2010). Relativist view is just a little less judgmental, suggesting that some situations may be determined morally correct while others simply remain wrong. In this paper neither the argument that neither the Unitarian view nor the Relativist view are completely correct. The suggestion that Ethical Egoism is the foundation within all humans suggest that only one individual’s perspective...
