MAS Fabric Park (MFP) is Sri Lanka’s first privately owned fabric intensive free trade zone. Setup in 2006 by MAS Investments, the Fabric Park is a unique location that stands 165 acres. Currently housing 08 entities that have set up, its main objective is to offer shared services to investors. The Fabric Park plays a vital vertical integration role within the group, strengthening MAS’ core business of apparel manufacturing through enabling fabric manufacturing, synthetic fabric printing and supply chain management, among other facilities.

MFP’s value addition to an investor is second to none in the region and unmatched in Sri Lanka. With an available treated water capacity of 9000 M3 an and effluent treatment capacity of4000 M3 the park has what most other zones find scarce. In addition services such as centralized steam supply (Bio-mass), internal power distribution, industrial building space of over 550,000 Feet2 makes entering the Fabric Park a plug and play operation to any eager investor. A company has only to gain by setting up at the park where costs such as the need to set up a boiler or a primary effluent treatment plant is foregone, saving over US $ 2 million.

While offering all benefits and services available in any free trade zone operated by the Board of Investment, MFP is the flagship industrial park of Sri Lanka. Dedicated to sustainable development, all services of the park are governed by an environmental management system under ISO 14001 mandate. It is only zone to offer waste management solutions to brand and design protected fabric waste.

In addition to shared services, the park offers luxury employee accommodation, training facilities, industrial catering, dining and clubhouse facilities, sports ground, gymnasium, swimming pool and adventure activities through its leisure and lifestyle arm, MIMT

Patronized by the top blue chips of the Island in addition to government organizations and NGOs, MIMT's umbrella of services is both unique and unmatched.

MIMT is also of strategic importance to MAS Holdings. This stems from two reasons. Firstly the global Nike training facility – 'NIKE APPAREL INNOVATION AND TRAINING CENTRE' (Nike-AITC) is based on a permanent fixture within MIMT. Nike-AITC trains over 100 people annually from over 15 different countries attracted from varying Nike vendor organizations. Secondly MIMT is the only location to have established MAS' first training facility on Lean – The MOS TRAINING CENTRE. MAS RESPONSIBILITY
Environmental Sustainability
Doing the right thing has always been a way of life at MAS Holdings. From the inception, our Business Development and Growth has always included focused attention on Corporate Social Responsibility.

A growing concern of our impact on the environment and a deeper understanding of evolving stakeholder expectations motivated MAS to adopt a more structured approach to driving Environmental Sustainability within the organization. We systematized existing localized environmental initiatives at our plants under focused work-streams and separated this from the Social Sustainability pillar.

Accordingly, MAS has been working aggressively to identify and minimize the environmental impact of our operations and products. A strong commitment to certifying all our facilities in Sri Lanka under ISO 14001 by the end of 2012 has catalyzed a significant culture change throughout the Group. Key achievements include reduction of the energy intensity of our production facilities by 8% over the last two years, through intense focus on energy efficiency. We have also sought energy security in our in-house steam generation, through the use of biomass boilers in our larger steam consuming factories.
All MAS facilities are being retrofitted for lower carbon, energy and water footprints, and our commitment to ‘build green’ has seen all new buildings being designed as 'green' facilities, following the pioneering footsteps MAS Intimates Thurulie, the first LEED Platinum new apparel construction in the world.

MAS has also focused on sustainable products, launching eco-elastics, and carbon neutral products. We have worked with our customers to promoting organic cotton, BCI cotton, recycled nylon and recycled polyester to bring more environmentally sustainable products to the market.

We recognize that this is a journey of continuous improvement as we align to evolving environmental demands. Our continued commitment to Environmental Sustainability is endorsed by the MAS Holdings' Main Board and forms part of our operating DNA.

SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY WOMEN GO BEYOND
CAREER ADVANCEMENT

MAS encourages female employees to work towards securing higher positions within the group by equipping them with the right skills.

Competence is built by providing focused development on a wide array of areas that support career advancement such as IT skills, English Language skills and leadership skills.
Skills Development
MAS Women Go Beyond develops livelihood skills of female employees. These programmes include:

Communication to avoid Conflict - This training provides participants with the necessary skills to communicate effectively and put across their ideas and suggestions.

Coaching, Mentoring & Counseling - building core skills needed to support a performance based growth in the organization. It allows a person to practice the skills a successful coach, counselor or mentor needs.
Work-Life Balance
We help our female employees achieve that delicate balance between their personal and professional lives through the provision of both knowledge in socially sensitive topics, while at the same time encouraging them to explore their natural talent and innate capabilities, helping them reach their maximum potential.

The following programmes that were initiated during 2011 have supported this aspect of Women Go Beyond:

Getting More Out of Life – Both female and male employees were educated on sexual and reproductive health, as well as image building, positive thinking and personal grooming

HIV/AIDS Awareness Campaign – Creating awareness at all levels within the organization on HIV/ AIDS and its health and social impact. This programme is carried out with the support of the International Labour Organization. * Addressing Gender-Based Violence at the Workplace – Enhancing their understanding on gender discrimination and gender-based violence, equipping them with basic knowledge and skills to assess how ‘safe’ and gender-equal a workplace is. The training is conducted with the support of the International Labour Orgranization.

Gender Sensitivity – This training creates a conducive work environment that includes not only safety and cleanliness, but also a mutually respectful social setting.

Agents of Change – To develop skills of selected employees, so that they can take on a proactive role in empowering women to meet the many faceted challenges posed by violence and abuse.

MAS Eco Go Beyond
In 2006, MAS Holdings launched ‘MAS Eco Go Beyond’, a community outreach initiative together with the support of the Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka, to create awareness on sustainability among the future generations of the country. Sustainability, while fast becoming a critical area of knowledge globally, was thus far not a part of the Sri Lankan school curriculum. MAS incorporated concepts from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Youth Exchange Programme (YXC) and the Consumer Citizenship Network’s (CCN) LOLA toolkit to develop a sustainability curriculum for Sri Lankan schools. The programme not only provides rural students with the opportunity to implement projects, but also fosters an educated and activated youth community who will in turn nurture sustainable livelihoods for themselves. Throughout the past 5 years of operation, Eco Go Beyond has impacted over 17,500 students of the target 15-18 age group in 30 schools, and indirectly their families and communities; taking sustainable development from an abstract concept to a ground reality.

In 2008 UNESCO used the outline of the Eco Go Beyond programme to develop the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Toolkit for the Asia Pacific region, and UNESCO Sri Lanka recognized MAS as the best partnership with the private sector for ESD in 2009.

Sports in our Culture
Where the Spirit Never Yields
Throughout the years, MAS Holdings has been a breeding ground for a generation of sporting heroes. Sport has played a large part in framing the spirit and culture at MAS, and a mindset that is fiercely competitive but also graceful in defeat.

A forerunner in rural capacity building, another aspect of our community impact is our commitment towards the upliftment of sports in Sri Lanka. The company is known for creating a nurturing environment for “champions” in numerous disciplines, picking untapped raw talent from rural environs. Sport is a key element in our culture, be it for team building and recreation of associates; or more so creating elite pathways for raw talent to become world class. Many of these sportsmen and women become forces to reckon with, and an exceptional few rewrite history.

In September 2012, MAS Holdings announced the renaissance of a victorious partnership with Sri Lanka Cricket as the proud clothing sponsor for the National men’s and women’s teams as well as the under 19 and A Teams, embarking on a quest once again to clothe home-grown champions.
Well over 100 MAS athletes have represented Sri Lanka at international meets in 21 sporting disciplines, amongst them, 3 Olympians. We are the only corporate entity in Sri Lanka to win the National Boxing Championship and retain the trophy 6 times during the past 10 years. Our commitment towards sustaining our employees and their futures comes from deep within. Our factories offer world class training facilities and foreign coaches, and provide necessary sporting gear and travel funds among other basic necessities.

INTERNERSHIPS
Industrial Training
Most local universities and technical training institutes require students in the Clothing and Textile Engineering discipline to undergo technical training internships as part of their curriculum. We encourage students to intern with us, gaining hands-on experience that will jump start their careers in the industry.

Internships vary from 4 to 6 months, familiarizing the interns with all areas of the MAS Business unit, followed by placement in a particular function, where they spend their time learning and contributing to the enhancement of existing processes. Prospective interns are selected through an interview which is arranged in collaboration with the educational institutions.

How to get on the Programme
If you are a student in the Clothing and Textile Engineering discipline at one of the following institutes, please contact the Head of your Department for details. | Moratuwa University – Faculty of Textile & Clothing | | Moratuwa University – National Diploma in Technology | | Kelaniya University – Faculty of Industrial Management |
The selection criteria for internships include academic performance, extracurricular activities, attitude and willingness to relocate to a MAS Business Unit which may be situated away from Colombo.
Summer Internship
MAS launched the Summer Internship Programme in 2004 with the objective of giving Sri Lankan students exposure to career opportunities available at home. Deutsche Bank and Dialog Axiata, two of the most powerful financial and corporate entities partnered with MAS' initiative in 2005 and 2007 respectively, to help Sri Lanka retain local talent. To date 114 students have undergone the internship, among them students from local universities and foreign institutions such as Harvard, London School of Economics, Dartmouth, Cambridge and Boston University.

The program entails a two week familiarization period in which the interns gain an overview of the three companies, followed by a 2-3 weeks focused project at one of the three companies. Upon completion of the project, each intern will present their learnings, experiences and suggestions to the senior leadership of MAS Holdings, Deutsche Bank and Dialog. In 2011 internship presentations were made to Deshamanya Mahesh Amalean (Chairman - MAS Holdings), Mr. Rohan Rodrigo (Chief Country Officer - Deutsche Bank) and Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya (Group Chief Executive - Dialog Axiata PLC).
The internship program also includes skill development workshops, adventure based training and many other exciting learning experiences; they are given opportunities to interact with heads of corporate entities, global ambassadors, and leaders in other relative areas that will enable participants to enhance their personal and professional development.

Their commitment towards the wellbeing of communities is also an area this programme emphasizes on, encouraging the students to participate in numerous social and environmental upliftment projects throughout their tenure as Summer Interns.

Applications from students who have completed their second year across all disciplines are welcome and interns are encouraged to explore employment opportunities within the three companies upon graduation. The internship program is held generally from July to Mid-August.

Interested undergraduates are invited to send in their résumé's or write to summer@masholdings.com for further details.

...ALIBABA Group Holding Brief History. Alibaba cooperation is a global wide Internet company founded by Jack Ma, Chinese name Ma Yun.Although Alibaba was founded in 1999, the story of how the company came to be actually dates back to 1995, when Jack Ma was on a trip to the U.S. and first became exposed to the Internet. As the story goes, he tried searching for the word "beer" on Yahoo but the search results did not turn up a single Chinese option. In fact, he could hardly find anything about China on the Internet at all. After returning home, he founded a company called China Pages - a directory of various Chinese companies looking for customers abroad. China Pages was a flop. From 1998 to 1999, he then became the head of an information technology company established by “China Electronic Commerce Center”. In 1999, he founded Alibaba which presently has over 79 million members – hundreds of millions of users and merchants. Businesses using ALIBABA are counted by the millions, from more than 240 countries and territories. In September 2014, the world has witnessed what has become the largest listing in the U.S. history of the stock market. This company has raised $25 billion for its IPO (Initial Public Offering), overtaking VISA’s $19.7 billion 2008 IPO. How did the company board of Directors manage to do that? It is worth noting that in 1992, Jack Ma, the CEO and founder of this company, then an English teacher in Hangzhou, China, needed to borrow $4,000 to start his first business: a “Translation Agency”, but he could not find the money. Today, he’s worth $21 billion. Let’s look at the facts. History Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. founded by Chung Tsai...

Taobao

...Management Information Systems Homework: Alibaba’s Taobao Angela Mae Jean Sy 12210690780 November 17, 2012 1. What was Alibaba’s motivation for diversifying into the consumer business with the launch of Taobao? Does this make sense? Jack Ma was alarmed at eBay’s entry into the online selling market, fearing that it would soon encroach on Alibaba’s existing B2B success. Ma knew that once eBay had a firm hold on their individual consumers and sellers, it would be easy for them to transition into a bigger, SME-targeted type of e-commerce. Given eBay’s worldwide dominance, Ma’s fears were not completely unfounded. It was this that motivated Ma to do something to stop eBay in its tracks. Ma’s reaction to eBay’s arrival, however, was not just to find a way to ensure their position as the leading B2B online goods provider. Before eBay could even begin to consider moving horizontally to B2B to facedown the Chinese giant, Alibaba became proactive and decided to expand into C2C, and thus Taobao was born. 2. How did Taobao beat eBay? Taobao was clearly ahead of eBay in many aspects. And while one may argue that eBay had exhibited participation in these aspects as well, they clearly did not do it as well as Taobao did. a. Familiarity with Chinese aesthetics and preference Alibaba had been founded by a Chinese man, in China, and has ben serving the Chinese market for years. It is only understandable that Taobao had a better concept of what the market wanted. When...
