Thinking for Themselves – Anthony D’Amelio Q8

The intellectual virtue of bravery can be defined as having the ability to think for yourself and not conform to the herd’s average way of thinking. This bravery allows a person to confront ideas and beliefs that are considered to be taboo or dangerous. Having intellectual bravery enables us to determine things for ourselves, and not just accept what we have been told.
The consequences for straying beyond society’s accepted viewpoints and beliefs can be very severe. Professor Timothy Leary is a person who in the 1960’s displayed intellectual bravery while telling the rest of the world to “think for yourself, and question authority”(How to Operate Your
Brain). President Nixon even called him “the most dangerous man in America”. Timothy Leary is largely famous for his sacramental use of LSD. However, Leary would first conduct experiments at Harvard University[->0] under the Harvard Psilocybin Project[->1] before being fired because of the controversy surrounding his research. Despite the negative reaction by mainstream America, Leary continued to pursue his research and experimentation with psycho- active compounds, writing several books including Exo-Psychology in 1977. Leary says
“Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open- mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself” (How to Operate Your Brain).
Famous for his mantra “tune in, turn on, and drop out”, Leary would become an icon for the counter-culture in America. Bill Maher is another person who displays intellectual bravery. Maher is a comedian who

was fired from the television network Comedy Central for stating his opinion against the Iraq war on the live television show “Politically Incorrect”. It took intellectual bravery to stand up against the war at a time when it was seemingly believed to be necessary by most people.
Despite the setback of being fired from Comedy Central, Maher was hired by HBO to do the same type of show under a new title. In his documentary “Religulous” Maher challenges organized religion and Christianity in particular, saying “The irony of religion is that because of its power to divert man to destructive courses[->2], the world could actually come to an end. The plain fact is religion must die for mankind to live. The hour is getting very late to be able to indulge in having key decisions made by religious people, by irrationalists, by those who would steer the ship of state not by a compass, but by the equivalent of reading the entrails of a chicken. Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking. Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don't have all the answers to think that they do” (2008). Maher remains a controversial figure in the world of political comedy, voicing his critically formed opinions on a regular basis. Bill Maher engages people with different beliefs to challenge his logic, resulting in the debate of important issues and problems that need to be solved. Sometimes the issues he engages are issues with multiple viewpoints towards which others may have associated negative emotion. Ideas and concepts that many may find taboo are largely over looked and lack the critical analysis they deserve. Another person whom displays the intellectual virtue of bravery is Julian Assange. Assange is the founder of Wikileaks, The website published information and evidence like government corruption and murder in Kenya, and a secret company report on illegal toxic waste dumping. In the years after 911 the United States government started keeping more secrets from it’s citizens.
Assange and Wikileaks became best known in 2010 when they started to publish U.S. military

and diplomatic documents on their website. Assange believes that ALL information should be made available to the people of the world and that information should be free. Assange said
“WikiLeaks may become the most powerful intelligence agency on earth, an intelligence agency of the people” (We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks). Assange attempted to take on the
United States government, and now the United States Department of Justice may prosecute
Assange for several offenses including “communicating with the enemy”. When getting ready to publish the United States military and diplomatic documents on his website Wikileaks, Assange said “We’re going to fuck them all, crack the world open and let it flower into something new”
(We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks). Julian Assange is obsessed with cracking the secrets of governments and corporations enabling the public access to this information. Assange’s idea of Wikileaks was his attempt to destroy corruption. Assange says “If we are to produce a more civilized and just society it has to be based on the truth” (We Steal Secrets: The Story of
WikiLeaks). Though clouded with personal and legal controversy, Assange remains to be a symbol of intellectual bravery for millions of people who agree with his philosophy. Marilyn Manson, aka Brian Warner stands out as one person with a great amount of intellectual courage. Out of respect for the artist I will refer to him by his legal name of Marilyn
Manson. Manson is a musical recording artist or “rock star” who has pushed the bounds of intellectual bravery. A scholar himself, Manson studied journalism before coming up with the fantastical idea of “Marilyn Manson”. This concept combines the names Marilyn Monroe and
Charles Manson. The idea is to combine the polar opposites of male and female, good and evil, positive and negative, and so on. Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson were two of the most famous people in 1969, the year of Marilyn Manson’s birth. This year also holds symbolism for
Manson because of the numbers six and nine; this is a visual representation the yin yang.

Manson was raised Christian and he says “Gradually, I began to resent Christian school and doubt everything I was told. It became clear that the suffering they were praying to be released from was a suffering they had imposed on themselves—and now us. The beast they lived in fear of was really themselves: It was man, not some mythological demon that was going to destroy man in the end. And this beast had been created out of their fear” (25). Manson would have the intellectual bravery to challenge mainstream Christian America, breaking every taboo along the way . His most critically acclaimed and successful album “Anti-Christ Superstar” was a satirical concept album that told the story of Manson’s life as boy and transformation into the “anti-
Christ superstar.” Ignorant to the true message and deeper meaning of the lyrics, large segments of Christian America would feed right into Manson’s plan by protesting his concerts with picket signs only serving to make him more successful. I myself have experienced the protesting of a Marilyn Manson concert in 1996 , at the height of his success and controversy. Picket signs were filled with hateful messages like “God hates Fags”, and signs with drawings of Manson burning in hell. Other protesters where telling me I was being seduced and under the power of
Marilyn Manson’s music. They were handing out condoms and bible pamphlets as if we the fans were some kind of subhuman creatures, on our way to hell for eternity. In Manson’s autobiography he says “The seeds of who I am now had been planted. ”Fools aren't born," I wrote in my notebook one day during ethics class. "They are watered and grown like weeds by institutions such as Christianity."” (21). The lyrical content from “Ant-Christ
Superstar” is deeply personal, Manson says “I was born into this, everything turns to shit. The boy that you loved is the man that you fear, but someone had to go this far” (“Man that you fear”). He is speaking to his family and referring to himself as the “man that you fear”. In another song Manson says “Anti-choice and anti-girl, I am the anti-flag unfurled. Anti-gay and

anti-dope, I am the faggot anti-Pope. You poisoned all your children to hide all of your scars.
ANTI-PEOPLE NOW YOU’VE GONE TOO FAR, HERE’S YOUR ANTI-CHRIST
SUPERSTAR (“Anti-Christ Superstar”). In the beginning many people dismissed Manson as just another “shock rocker”, but twenty years later he is now a household name and largely respected as a true artist. He had the courage to think for himself and create an alter ego to help express his thoughts and ideas. Something that started as a fictional character in a notebook was made manifest into reality. Though Manson had no musical talent he managed to get a band together as a vehicle for his controversial opinions and ways of thinking. All the members in the band would have to take on pseudo names that began with the first names of famous female actresses, and the last names of famous male serial-killers. There was a reason for making this band so shocking. As Manson says in his autobiography “As a performer, I wanted to be the loudest, most persistent alarm clock I could be, because there didn’t seem like any other way to snap society out of its Christianity- and media-induced coma” (56). Worshipped, hated, and feared, Manson’s music has been the subject of countless boycotts, protests, and bans. His lyrics, music, and books reveal intellectual bravery that cannot be denied. This is man who stood up against the hypocrisy of Christianity, and America itself. A deeply intelligent man who has the courage to think for himself and force others to think as well: Marilyn Manson, the single most controversial rock star in musical history.

Bravery

...Bravery Odysseus was a virtuous and heroic leader. He and many other characters showed many acts of bravery. The bravery that Odysseus possessed was extraordinary and could have changed the story line completely if he didn’t use it as often then the story may have developed different. Odysseus’ bravery was tested in many adventures that he endured throughout the novel. This will be proven in many ways throughout the essay. Some examples of people that also showed bravery are Penelope, the herders, Tele, the suitors and even Ody’s crew. But the basic point im throwing across is that if no one had shown the bravery that they didn’t the story line could have completely gone in to a different direction. Some of the smaller characters that showed bravery every once and a while were Penelope, the herders, the suitors, and Ody’s crew. But the played a big part in the development of the story using the character trait bravery. An example of this is when Ody’s crew helped Ody using this trait. One example of this is when they were trapped in the Cyclopes’s Cave and they helped Ody build a giant six-foot long spear made out of a tree and then they helped him thrust it into the Cyclopes’s eye while he was sleeping. This was an example of bravery because they did this because they didn’t want to be eaten by the Cyclopes so they attacked him and succeeded. Not only if they hadn’t have done this then the story may have developed differently...

Light Brigade

...History Vima How far do sources 1, 2 and 3 agree with the view that the charge of the light brigade was a disaster? On one hand there is a substantial agreement with the sources regarding the charge of the light brigade and that it was complete disaster. For example in source 1 it depicts the theme of injury and death, the newspaper referred to the majority of the soldiers as “wounded men” and when they were charging the Russian soldiers were “cutting them down” this shows that the battle of the light brigade was a disaster as there were many wounded men and vast casualties at such a short period of time. The theme of death and injury is further echoed by source 2 where it gives a more graphic representation of the theme of injury and death, The source says to back up this theme “A corporal who rode on the right was struck by a shot or shell full in the face, completely smashing it, his blood and brains bespattering us” this further backs up the theme of death and injury as the solider gives a very brutal and horrific example of death that occurred on the battlefield. Therefore this further supports source 1 that it was a disaster as there was very violent and horrific deaths. Also this was probably not the only example of horrific death on the battle field as cannonballs were flying at them from all sides. Nevertheless it is key to note that source 2 is a very credible source to use to back up this point. This is because by looking at the provenance of the source it was...

Personal Narrative: Generalized Anxiety Disorder

...Bravery is the willingness to confront anger, pain, danger, and uncertainty. I was diagnosed with ADHD, generalized anxiety disorder, and autism spectrum disorder when I was in my senior year of high school. My stepmother noticed that I was struggling in school and noticed the warning signs years earlier. The idea of me being tested was mentioned numerous times, but life got in the way and it was put to the side. The testing was started beginning of my senior year, because it was the year that determined where I would go after graduation. The diagnosis was scary, because I worried about how future colleges and employers would look at me, because I had a disability on my application. In the beginning it was difficult for me to tell my college professors that I had a disability, because I feared they would treat me differently. My university has a disability center which offers supports to students with disabilities. My first semester in college was rough and I didn’t take the opportunity to use all the resources afforded to me. I also wasn’t taking my medication on a consistent basis, because I was stubborn and in denial. It was very difficult time for me, because I received numerous scholarships and was worried that I could lose them due to my grade. Thankfully I was able...

Overlord

...Chapter 1: The End and Beginning Prologue Facing the young girl and her little sister, the armored knight raised his sword. To have mercy was to take away a life in a single strike. Struck by the sunlight, the sword glistened high up in the air. The girl shut her eyes and bit down on her lower lip. Her expression showed that she never wished for this situation. She was simply accepting it since there was nothing she could do. If the girl had power of some sort, she would have used it on the man before her eyes and ran away. But— the girl had no such power. Thus there existed only one conclusion. The girl would surely perish here. The sword struck down — —Yet she did not feel any pain. The girl opened her tightly shut eyes. The first thing that the girl saw in her world was the sword that had stopped in its path downward. The next thing that entered her sight was its wielder. He had stopped in motion as though he were encased in ice. The knight’s attention was no longer on the girl. The completely defenseless state of the knight clearly revealed the shock that surged inside him. As though led by the knight’s gaze, the girl also turned her face toward the same direction. Then— she saw despair. There was darkness. Pure darkness as thin as paper, yet of an unfathomable depth. It had emerged from the ground in an ovoid shape with its lower section cut. A scene that evoked mystique with indescribable apprehension. A...

Immigration in America

...“The land of opportunity and freedom” is the saying that attracts so many individuals from around the world to migrate to the United States of America. Today, immigration has become such a large topic that policies, our countries economy, and even the outcome of elections are heavily weighed around the issue. The problem that arises from the situation isn’t the fact that it is causing a hardship for our country, the problem stems from the ignorance of majority of the people here in America that don’t understand the positive and important role immigrants play on our countries continuous growth. For the longest I always thought that the only immigrants coming into the country were those of lower educational, occupational, and English proficiency status and as a country “we are now getting the poorest of each race”. I attribute this mindset to the fact that I grew up misinformed about immigration because whenever the topic was brought up or mentioned, it seemed to always focus around illegal immigrants coming from Mexico supposedly stealing jobs from others, and around Asian immigrants coming to the country with no intention on learning English. With these two instances being the focal point of all conversations I was rather a part of our witnessed based around immigration, it’s understandable why I, and many others had/have negative thoughts towards immigration. After reading Immigrant America, reviewing reports by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), and in class discussions...

Personal Responsibility Paper

...Educational Success Through Personal Responsibility Educational Success Through Personal Responsibility Personal responsibility encompasses everything that makes us who we are, what allows us to succeed throughout our lives. To me, personal responsibility is critical because to know its definition is to be a pro-active human being willing to stay focused on themselves and their overall goals, especially when it comes to a college education. Achieving educational success is vital in that it allows us to be taken more seriously in the real world; it’s common knowledge that a majority of people won’t be hired into or attain well paying employment unless they have at least a Bachelors degree from an accredited university. The link between personal responsibility and college success is a clear one, without focus and self-discipline then it would be impossible for someone to succeed in school. A person has to want to be in college, they need an affinitive reason for pursuing their degree, or else their personal responsibility will prove to be considerably low. Before anything else, it’s important for people to know who they are inside and out, to be comfortable and happy in their own skin. According to respected professor D.R. Garrison, self-monitoring is synonymous with personal responsibility to construct meaning. He states “to be responsible for one's own learning necessitates a willingness and ability to self-monitor the learning process” (Garrison, 1997). The value of...

The Importance of Acedemic Honesty

The concerns of academic honesty and the lack of it are increasing, therefore colleges and universities are taking immense measures to control academic dishonesty. This paper will describe the definition of academic dishonesty as defined by Hard, Conway and Moran as well as describe the importance of academic honesty. The long term negative effects of academic dishonesty will be discussed as well as the various methods of deterrence. Building and acquiring academic integrity can encourage a student to become more confident with his or her academic assignments as well as improving him or herself academically. Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty is a form of cheating whether it is deliberately or inadvertently. Academic honesty is a major issue and the importance of this topic has been at the top of discussion between teachers and students at every level of education, especially within adult students with both face-to-face and online courses in the modern era. Academic dishonesty is described by Hard, Conway, and Moran (2006) below: providing or receiving assistance in a manner not authorized by the instructor in the creation of work to be submitted for academic evaluation, including papers, projects and examinations (cheating); and presenting, as one’s own, the ideas of words of another person or persons for academic evaluation without...

Unemployment

...“According to the United States Department Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics office, Mississippi’s unemployment rate was 11.5 percent as of April 2010” (BLS, 2010, para. 10). It is not an easy experience to become unemployed; however, this is becoming a reality in these traumatic economic times. The unemployment rate is high, unemployment benefits are running out, and the job growth is still at an all-time low. Although future programs look promising, the current regulations and obstacles the unemployed are facing today is in dire need of change. The current regulation and compensation laws provide unemployment benefits based on federal and state laws. This compensation programs is maintained by the state in which they provide benefits to the unemployed who qualify for unemployment insurance. “In Mississippi, the employer pays the cost of unemployment insurance. To be eligible to receive Mississippi unemployment benefits you must: • Be unemployed through no fault of your own • Be able to work • Be available to work • File a claim for benefits • Serve a one-week waiting period • Have earned sufficient wage credits • Be registered for work at the WIN Job and Claims Center in your area The amount of the benefit is determined by the amount of wages in your base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters prior to the effective date of your claim” (Lawyers.com, 2010). The nursing shortage statistics are as follows: in 1990 the United States had an 11% vacancy rate of unfilled, full-time RN positions. This number ebbs and flows over time but since 2001 the United States has had a 13% vacancy rate of unfilled , full-time RN positions and this has not changed as in past times ( Fox & Abrahamson, 2009). According to Fox & Abrahamson, 2009,” A web of dysfunction exists that is far more complicated than any single factor, “(235-244). There are many influencing factors to blame for this nursing shortage. One such factor is the population imbalance created by the Baby Boomers aging and leaving the workforce and the smaller Generation X’ers that have to try and care for all of these aging people (Fox & Abrahamson, 2009). Another influencing factor are our aging pool RN’s. Our average RN age is 43 and we have many nurses retiring. Half of RN’s are going to be over 50 by age 2010 and the U.S. does not have enough new nurses to replace them (Fox & Abrahamson...

Need to Develop Uniform Credit System

...the credit system be adopted at all levels of higher education, the actual implementation has not been done. At many universities the annual system is still in practice. Though some of the universities have adopted semester system at under-graduate & post-graduate level, very few universities have implemented credit system and that also, mostly at the post-graduate level. In this scenario the students who wish to join other universities during their studies at under-graduate level or after completion of graduation face many hurdles. This is mostly because there is no accepted system for assigning proper credits for the studies undertaken and to establish the equivalence. In fact, there is no change in attitude of the teacher and academic administrators to accept the credit system. European nations have realized these problems years before and have successfully tried to develop European Credit Transfer System(ECTS). This system is operational at present and has facilitated the movement of the students among different universities. This has also helped to establish twining programmes and establishment of dual degrees. The term abroad programme has gained the popularity in recent years. In India the universities like Pune University has initiated the term abroad programme. At present students from engineering, arts & science participate in term abroad programme in the countries such as Canada,...

So much love as if I am married to my work. I am the living example of someone whose her passion becomes a profession. For me working it’s like playing. There were never a dull moment. But then I came to a point where I desired something more that would make me feel whole. It was education. I craved so much to broaden my knowledge, enriching experiences, and expanding my network.
