It is also concerned on how students learn by means of their different learning styles, this only means that they learn differently and uniquely especially when they know what’s best for them. Students in Xavier University are being observed, guided and tested by the teachers in many ways like seeing, hearing and experiencing things first hand. Dunn(2000), defined learning style as the way a person processes, internalizes and studies new and challenging material. The cornerstone of this theory is the most people can learn and individuals have their own unique ways of mastering new and difficult subject matter. One type of vocabulary that has been investigated has been that used mostly in academic writing. However, there has been little empirical study into the acquisition and use of two types of vocabulary common in academic writing, linking adverbials and reporting verbs. In addition, most studies into data-driven learning and academic vocabulary acquisition have assumed that the acquisition of this vocabulary will automatically lead to better academic writing. However, there have been no studies which have confirmed these assumptions. This study will attempt to fill these gaps in the literature. It investigates the acquisition of linking adverbials and reporting verbs, two sets of vocabulary that are difficult for ESL writers to master, with the use of data-driven learning techniques. In addition to looking at the acquisition of this vocabulary specifically, this study investigates whether these approaches also contribute to students’ progress in their academic writing. Results indicate that data-driven learning techniques do in fact help students acquire and better employ linking adverbials in their writing, although they do not help in the case of reporting verbs. ...CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM Introduction Learning environment refers to the physical characteristics of the surroundings of the students when learning. These may vary depending on environmental elements such as sound, light, temperature, and design (Tenedero, 2009). Sound is the first element of the learning environment. Most students are contented with only one sound inside the classroom. This sound refers to the teacher’s voice - explaining the lesson, giving out instructions or assignments, or scolding a student or the entire class (Tenedero, 2009). Some learners prefer total silence or minimum sound because sound acts as a distraction to their effective learning (Senge, 2006). A study done by an American, named James Wallace (2008), mentioned that Filipino students prefer a quiet environment rather than having music or other sounds when studying. One of the most important uses of learning styles is that it makes it easier for teachers to incorporate teaching approaches suited to each learning styles. There are different learning styles. Three of the most popular ones are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic in which students acquire information. This study is an analysis of learning styles prevalent among elementary school pupils in terms of gender and grade level. It was conducted on three learning styles-visual, auditory and tactile/kinesthetic. It aims to determine differences between gender and learning styles. It also tries to find out correlation between different learning styles and academic achievements of pupils. A sample of 120 pupils of class 4th, 5th and 6th of Balabag Elementary School was selected for the study. Findings of the study reveal that, visual learning style was found to be more prevalent than visual and auditory learning styles among 4th graders while auditory learning style is more prevalent than visual and kinesthetic learning styles among 5th and 6th graders elementary school pupils. In distinguishing between systems requiring early and late specialization, he predicts the likelihood of an individual switching to an occupation unrelated to one’s field of study. If higher education serves mainly to provide specific skills, the model predicts more switching in a system requiring late specialization since the cost of switching is lower in terms of foregone skills.
