Education in school to be more effective, the environment needs to be conducive to learning, allowing the pupils space and time to interact within the learning and teaching process. Creating and maintaining stimulating learning environments can be achieved through effective classroom organization, interactive and whole school displays and a climate of innovation.
This ideal learning environment optimizes well being. It reflects a positive schools that makes the school an exciting, stimulating and welcoming place.
Schools do this by: * developing and communicating an explicit commitment to wellbeing * acknowledging individual differences and providing opportunities for all students to learn and succeed * ensuring students have opportunities to participate in school decision-making processes * applying consistent school-wide rules and consequences that are: * collaboratively developed with students and the broader school community * clearly explained * positively enforced * rewarding of good behavior * providing pastoral care for students * maintaining a physical space, including cyber environment that maximizes staff and student safety * supporting staff wellbeing.

Good facilities appear to be an important precondition for student learning, provided that other conditions are present that support a strong academic program in the school. A growing body of research has linked student achievement and behavior to the physical building conditions and overcrowding.
Physical Building Conditions
Decaying environmental conditions such as peeling paint, crumbling plaster, nonfunctioning toilets, poor lighting, inadequate ventilation, and inoperative heating and cooling systems can affect the learning as well as the health and the morale of staff and students.
Impact on student achievement * Students in school buildings in poor condition had achievement that was 6% below schools in fair condition and 11% below schools in excellent condition. Poorer achievement was associated with specific building condition factors such as science facilities, air conditioning, classroom furniture, and noisy external environments. quality of air inside public school facilities may significantly affect students' ability to concentrate. * The quality of air inside public school facilities may significantly affect students' ability to concentrate. The evidence suggests that youth, especially those under ten years of age, are more vulnerable than adults to the types of contaminants (asbestos, radon, and formaldehyde) found in some school facilities

Impact on teaching * The teacher determine which aspects of the physical environment affected their teaching the most, and these teachers pointed to the availability and quality of classroom equipment and furnishings, as well as ambient features such as climate control and acoustics as the most important environmental factors. In particular, the teachers emphasized that the ability to control classroom temperature is crucial to the effective performance of both students and teachers.

* Building renovations in one district led teachers to feel "a renewed sense of hope, of commitment, a belief that the district cared about what went on that building." In dilapidated buildings in another district, the atmosphere was punctuated more by despair and frustration, with teachers reporting that leaking roofs, burned out lights, and broken toilets were the typical backdrop for teaching and learning."

* Where the problems with working conditions are serious enough to impinge on the work of teachers, they result in higher absenteeism, reduced levels of effort, lower effectiveness in the classroom, low morale, and reduced job satisfaction. Where working conditions are good, they result in enthusiasm, high morale, cooperation, and acceptance of responsibility.

Overcrowding
Overcrowded schools are a serious problem in many school systems, particularly in the inner cities, where space for new construction is at a premium and funding for such construction is limited. As a result, students find themselves trying to learn while jammed into spaces never intended as classrooms, such as libraries, gymnasiums, laboratories, lunchrooms, and even closets. Although research on the relationship between overcrowding and student learning has been limited, there is some evidence,particularly in high-poverty schools, that overcrowding can have an adverse impact on learning.
Crowded classroom conditions not only make it difficult for students to concentrate on their lessons, but inevitably limit the amount of time teachers can spend on innovative teaching methods such as cooperative learning and group work or, indeed on teaching anything beyond the barest minimum of required material. In addition, because teachers must constantly struggle simply to maintain order in an overcrowded classroom, the likelihood increases that they will suffer from burnout earlier than might otherwise be the case.

LIGHTING
One of the most critical physical characteristics of the classroom is lighting. The importance of an appropriate visual environment for learning tasks deserves careful consideration. The visual environment affects a learner's ability to perceive visual stimuli and affects his/her mental attitude, and thus, performance. The lightning of a school should be considered an active element of the total educational environment. Good lighting contributes significantly to the aesthetics and psychological character of the learning space. Students in well-lighted classrooms over regular (poorly lighted) classrooms that significant increases in the scores on the ability of individuals in school to concentrate on instructions was strongly influenced by factors such as lighting.Many schools by modifying the existing lighting system could reduce systems costs while providing an improved learning environment through better vision, visual impact and comfort.
Classroom lighting plays a particularly critical role because of the direct relationship between good lighting and student's performance. Light is a key to the general well-being of people confined to a physical facility a great portion of the day. Seeing in bad light can lead to the development of ineffective programming of the information collection process which may become habitual. Bad lighting leads to discomfort.

...The moment that I realized I wanted to enhance my academic performance was when I was selected to attend the “Upward Bound” program at Mississippi State University. I and a few other students were accepted into this program because we were performing at higher academic level from the rest of our peers. In order to get accepted into the Upward Bound program, a student’s GPA had to be a minimum 3.0. When I learned that I was one of the student’s chosen to be a part of this program, I was very excited and scared. The fear that I felt existed because the program was being held at a university and I did not know what to expect. On the other hand, I was excited to be away from home and have the opportunity to be able to coexist among older students. After arriving at Mississippi State University, I eventually got settled in and became inspired by my new environment. I took a tour of the entire campus so that I could become familiar with the buildings and halls that would host my classes. I visited buildings such as the library, cafeteria, and sororities and fraternities. While touring the campus, I remember feeling more determined and inspired to work harder so that I can experience the college lifestyle. I wanted to connect with embracing more knowledge so that I can create a brighter future for myself and I knew that this environment would be the gateway to that.
