Introduction The literature and previous surveys that were conducted examined the effects of working and students’ academics all had varying findings about the implications that working had on academic success. However, the overall agreement seemed to be that students who worked 20 hours or more may have experienced a negative influence, either by lowering the GPA or inhibiting them from completing school (Dundes and Marx (2006). This attitude would change depending on the number of hours worked (The National Center of Education Statistics; NCES), where the work was taking place (Presley, 2013), and how many credit hours one was enrolled in Torres, Gross, and Dadashova (2010). Much of the research reviewed dealt with how many hours students put into their jobs and what types of jobs they held. Since those results were not consistent with my hypothesis; working negatively effects a student’s completion of a degree program, my study examines similar variables, such as number of hours working, number of classes enrolled in, and where the work was taking place. These dependent variables, in addition to independent variables such as GPA and challenges faced while working and attending school, will provide further evidence regarding the effects of employment has on college completion.

Data Collection The type of method that was used in this study consisted of a self-administered survey of a non-random sample of participants. The survey consisted of twelve questions, asking a variety of yes/no questions, scale questions, and opened ended questions. I surveyed these twelve participants either in a local restaurant or at the mall. Five were completed at Brennan’s Bowery restaurant in Clarence, NY, during the lunch hour and was not very crowded or noisy.
