...Jose Cando ENGL-2327 April 26, 2014 Balcones Fiction and Poetry Winners Reading Event: Natalie Diaz’s Reading of When My Brother Was an Aztec Outside the ACC Theater on April 9th, the public was greeted by tables of refreshment including fruits cheeses and crackers which was a nice surprise. Although, I had expected a packed theater, only about forty people were waiting inside. The event started at 6:30 pm when Charlotte Gullick, the chair of the creative a writing department took the stage. After promoting some of creative writing classes at ACC, she described the significance of the Balcones prizes. A teacher from the English department took the stage next to talk a little more about the Balcones prize. He pointed out that Natalie Diaz was the sixteenth winner of this prize. He described Ms. Diaz as a woman with her foot “in three different worlds.” Her childhood was spent on the Mojave reservation in the California Desert. She attended college in Virginia on a basketball scholarship, and from there she played professional basketball in Europe and Asia. After injuring her knee, she left basketball to study poetry in graduate school. Therefore, he claimed, she has a foot in the worlds of the reservation, basketball and poetry. With that, he welcomed Nathalie to the stage. Nathalie jumped into reading her poem, “When My Brother Was an Aztec.” I was shocked to hear the bitterness and resentment in her voice as she describe her brother as a nasty and careless force which...

...Eventually, all billing and payments will be done electronically. It is less expensive to deliver bills electronically as well as make payments. A few companies have already gone “paperless” and one must receive an electronic bill as well as make an electronic payment. Over time, I think all companies will eventually implement paperless billing and payments. An employee does have a right to privacy; however, when he or she is using company equipment including, email address and Internet access, he or she should not expect privacy. The company owns the equipment, email, Internet connection, and voicemail; therefore, it should have access to and monitor those. The company should set expectations through written policies and the culture of the company. A company I worked for encountered this exact problem. Our email account crashed and had to be completely reset. The reset also reset everyone’s passwords to a default. We each had to redo our individual passwords. We had an employee who was absent the day it happened. When she got back to work, she thought someone had reset only her password and accused the IT person of invading her privacy. She claimed he had no right to access her email or reset her password without her permission. She threatened to sue the company because they were “monitoring” her “personal” email. Needless to say, it went nowhere. The labor commission became involved and sided with the company. First of all, nobody invaded her privacy. Second...

...Assessment 1- Reducing Risk, Company: R.M Williams Functional RM Williams clothes and boots are steeped in history and the company has been trading since 1932 and has coined itself as “The Bush Outfitter”. Their functionality has always been core to their business. RM Williams is unique as they manufacture, distribute and retail their products and brand. They have been Australian designed and made, with high quality materials and great cuts. At the launch of Regional Express Airlines (or REX as it is known), the staff, Pilots, and flight attendants all wore RM Williams clothing and footwear. This moved RM Williams from just country clothing consumed by country people to clothing consumed by business people, and a business. Not only was the airlines bringing country people to the cities, it was bringing their fashion too. Perhaps RM Williams was expanding their target market from predominantly rural and country people to city people, and further segmentation to the urban young professional. The target market shift may have been due to economic forces – RM Williams looking for more stability from a city market, not just from people from the land, who had good seasons and bad. What was once a utilitarian need being met, may now be a hedonic need being met – or both. Physical The distribution of RM Williams clothing and boots has also changed with the times. From its humble beginnings of a mail order business, to only in a limited amount of stores and presence in Myers...

Osmose Wood Preserving, 340 Md. 519 (1994), a number of homeowners purchased townhomes that had a roofs constructed of Fire Retardant Treated (FRT) plywood manufactured by the defendant Hoover Treated Wood Product, Inc. (Hood Wood). Homeowners claim in their complaint the fire retardant treated plywood, when exposed to high temperatures begin an acidic reaction that was designed to stop the spread of fire. It was also alleged that the reaction can occur at temperatures as low as 130 degrees and roofs can reach 180 degrees without the presence of fire. The homeowners say that the chemical reaction “weakens the wood and destroys the bonding between the plywood laminates, thereby causing the wood, among other things, to bow, darken, spot, warp fracture and otherwise deteriorate and lose strength capacity.” The homeowners claim that this reaction will eventually occur in the plywood installed in their homes, without regard to ventilation or moisture levels I attics. Management also advertised there products falsely after begin notified.
