...close and have grown fond of each other during the past few years living together. We are never bored and have the most insane time when we are together, which sometimes leaves our third flat mate, Adam, feeling a little redundant, or at least that's what I think. Actually Adam is usually awfully busy doing God-know-what and he doesn't like the sort of games Jeffery and I play. The cigarette is finished but not my tea. I light another one. I always wake up before Jeffery. He must be still asleep in his room. Last night was fun, but not worth it, I find myself saying this more and more frequently then I should these days. You see even though my love for Jeffery flows in my very veins, and I will always love him, but Jeffery is a complete ass and he doesn't know what he is doing with his life and he needs to go! I better start studying before Jeffery wakes up, I say to...

...Jose Cando ENGL-2327 April 26, 2014 Balcones Fiction and Poetry Winners Reading Event: Natalie Diaz’s Reading of When My Brother Was an Aztec Outside the ACC Theater on April 9th, the public was greeted by tables of refreshment including fruits cheeses and crackers which was a nice surprise. Although, I had expected a packed theater, only about forty people were waiting inside. The event started at 6:30 pm when Charlotte Gullick, the chair of the creative a writing department took the stage. After promoting some of creative writing classes at ACC, she described the significance of the Balcones prizes. A teacher from the English department took the stage next to talk a little more about the Balcones prize. He pointed out that Natalie Diaz was the sixteenth winner of this prize. He described Ms. Diaz as a woman with her foot “in three different worlds.” Her childhood was spent on the Mojave reservation in the California Desert. She attended college in Virginia on a basketball scholarship, and from there she played professional basketball in Europe and Asia. After injuring her knee, she left basketball to study poetry in graduate school. Therefore, he claimed, she has a foot in the worlds of the reservation, basketball and poetry. With that, he welcomed Nathalie to the stage. Nathalie jumped into reading her poem, “When My Brother Was an Aztec.” I was shocked to hear the bitterness and resentment in her voice as she describe her brother as a nasty and careless force which...

...This essay presents a brief overview of the development of the nineteenth century English novel. Transition and Transformation: One could be forgiven for believing that the words ‘fiction’ and ‘novel’ mean one and the same thing. The main reason for this confusion is that both of them have a common denominator; they both tell a story. In the novel, we have the theatre of life and for over two centuries it has been the most effective agent of the moral imagination. Though it has never really achieved perfection in form and its shortcomings are numerable, nevertheless one experiences from it not only the extent of human variety, but also the value of this variety. Fiction existed right from the first time man told a story and thus it is in this respect only, that it is similar to the forerunner of the novel as we know it today, which is any work of fiction in England written before 1670. Novelists express their conscious conclusions about life as they experience it and these manifest themselves not only in the characters they create and their interaction with each other, but also in the way they make them react or respond to the various situations in which they find themselves and in what they say within these situations. They are relatively free to choose their material, but their conclusions about life and the nature of their novels are dependent on their innate personality, as this affects not only the way in which they present their characters, but also our own understanding...

...Amir and Baba may be father and son, but they are nothing alike. Amir, is the cowardly one, and Baba is the bear. Amir spent most of his time trying to impress his father, and not succeeding. Amir would try and just end up disappointing Baba. In the end, Amir ruined his own life and the life of others trying to impress his father. When Amir’s mother died while giving birth to him, he felt it was his fault, and that Baba somehow blamed Amir. This is not true. Baba was very much in love with his wife; she was his princess. Baba’s problem was not that Amir had taken his princess away, but that Amir was nothing like Baba, and he could not relate to his own son. This was a big burden on Amir. Amir felt Baba treated him differently because he had taken his mother away from Baba. Amir felt the need to make up for it. Amir’s mother being alive would not have changed the way Baba treated him because Amir would have been the same little boy that was weak and cowardly, and that was what Baba hated so much. Baba gave special treatment to their servant, Hassan, and this made Amir jealous. Baba treated Hassan like a son. After all, Hassan was easier to relate to for Baba because he would stand up for himself when he needed to. Hassan did not let people push him around like Amir did, and I thought this appealed to Baba because that is what he wanted Amir to be like. Later on, I learned it was because of a secret that was much...

Goods and Services Tax (GST) or Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax imposed on the sale of goods and services. The Malaysian government introduce this potential tax mechanism, in order to increase the existing tax bracket and replacing the long-implemented service and sales taxes. With the introduction of GST, the Malaysian government felt it would provide them with the prospect to reduce the rates of individual and corporate income tax. However, do all companies particularly small and medium enterprises (Companies) ready to adopt the systems efficiently? If they could adopt the system, how much their...
