Accepting Treves In Elie Wiesel's The Elephant Man

When a character in literature wishes for its own good, the result of the accomplishment will have a huge impact on their life and moral values. The Elephant Man, has a protagonist, John Merrick, he was inborn with disabilities. Since his birth, he only desired one element from nature; to be accepted by others. A few characters in the the book were accepting Merrick as normal, but if you look through them and from the their heart, they have not taken Merrick as normal. Throughout the book, the author does not show Merrick’s feelings, it does not mean that he did not have a heart. The author did not show Merrick’s feelings because before he met Treves and other characters, everyone stared at Merrick like he was an alien, and he has already…show more content… He was born in such a way, for that his mother abandoned him, he got rejected from the time he was born on Earth. One could infer that the society has been moved on an independent and selfish world. In Merrick’s mind, he desires to be accepted by others, but he has acknowledged himself that because of his appearance, nobody would take him in as a human. Soon after Treves has taken him in London, Merrick starts to think and act like normal humans. Treves was really deep hearted, so he made all the arrangements. From all London, he invited many guests to see Merrick, and each guest gave day-to-day routine “human requirements” to Merrick. For example, Lord John gives Merrick a silver-topped walking stick, which he would not of used, but if he carries it around, he will feel like normal human. Another guest, Duchess, brought him a ring to wear, he knew that normal humans wear rings to keep their loved ones with themselves by wearing ring, and whenever they missed their loved ones, they would just look at the ring and remember the moments of good times.
