The food is greasy, bathrooms are broken and disgusting, and there are rats, cockroaches along with barely working computers. Does this sound like a healthy school environment? For the kids and teachers at Notre Dame Preparatory this might be a literal hell, however, this is what normal school is like for inner city kids. Moreover, Author Anne Beatty, wrote “Survival Skills at a School in LA” published in 2013 in The American Scholar, argues that the system has given up on these kids long before they have started; and fails to provide the basic needs causing them to turn towards gang related violence. According to Anne Beatty, “Gang violence is a symptom of a society that does not meet the physical and emotional needs of its children”. Meaning a gang meet all the basic necessities that a child lacks in their life like food, clothing, a family or even an identity. Due to poor schooling conditions, these children do not find their purpose while at school, but instead they find it while continuing to fight for their life out on the street possibly gangbanging. Moreover, children are allured by gang because they find acceptance for who they are unlike that these schools, which was seen earlier in the text with DeAndre and one of the counselors and the dean who did not care about him. Beatty uses pathos to employ a reaction from the reader on issues of how kids dying in South Central LA is not news worthy due to how often it happens. And, to how poor education is affecting students at this high school who are angry and jealous about where the money is going. Finally, Beatty also applies logos to the situation to talk about how these children are turning to gang because of how society fails to give them the tools to succeed outside of violence and gangs.
