According to Bureau of Labor Statistics information from 2010, the average wage of accountants and auditors was $61,690. However, the top 10 percent of accountants earned more than $106,880. There are great opportunities for accountants who have graduated at the top of their program, and for those who have high-levels of certification, such as those who are CPAs.
[Many states have different requirements for accounting. Some states like the state of New Hampshire requires that applicants for a license complete at least 12 semester hours in accounting courses. The state of California requires that applicants complete a minimum of 24 semester hours in accounting in courses such as financial reporting, auditing, taxes, financial statements and external reporting. The Underrepresentation of Blacks in the Accounting Profession

...Abstract This paper discusses the underrepresentation of blacks in the accounting profession in light of the increasing demand for Certified Public Accountants (CPA). The paper ex- plores the various reasons why blacks are underrepresented in the accounting profession. Furthermore, the paper examines these reasons through the lens of race and ethnicity. The paper also synthesizes multiple sources regarding blacks’ underrepresentation in account- ing. Blacks are underrepresented in accounting because of internal and external factors linked to their ethnic identity. Many blacks feel that they do not belong to the accounting profession, and as a result, they rarely choose accounting as a career. Many CPA firms think that blacks are not capable of doing the job and delivering the superior results that clients expect. While the demand for new and diverse accounting talents is increasing in light of recent white-collar crimes committed by Bernie Madoff, Enron and WorldCom, blacks’ representation in the ac- counting field still remains low. Research has shown that blacks are under- represented in most American Certified Public Accountant (CPA) firms. There is much speculation as to why this is so. One reason might be that blacks have some personal qualities that cause them to enter the account- ing profession at a low rate. Some people might even wonder if society is still oppressive towards blacks years after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. The reasons why blacks are underrepresented...

Accounting Standards Board

...Accounting Standards Boards Paper Elena Thomas ACC/541 January 10, 2011 Accounting Standards Boards Paper In the 1930’s, the financial community was realizing a need for a uniform accounting standard especially for its publicly traded companies. The SEC was given the authority by the Securities Act of 1933 to create accounting standards and determine the accounting disclosures (M.E. Sharpe, 2006). The SEC deferred to the accounting profession the task of creating auditing standards. The New York Stock exchange and the now American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) together published guidelines for audits. In 1971, the AICPA created a committee which was chaired by Francis M. Wheat and comprised of seven members to make recommendations on how to better the accounting principles ("US Financial Accounting Standards Board FASB; IASB and US FASB Complete First Stage of Conceptual Framework," 2010). This committee recommended that a full time board be developed to create set accounting standards. This led to the development of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) in 1973 within the Financial Accounting Foundation ("US Financial Accounting Standards Board FASB; IASB and US FASB Complete First Stage of Conceptual Framework," 2010). The function of the FASB is to establish and publish the accounting principles. The FASB issues three major types of pronouncements: 1) Standards, Interpretations, and Staff positions 2) Financial Accounting...

A Look Into Accounting

...A Look into Accounting: Discovering the Gaps Between Educational Insights and Career Expectations It is inherently difficult to measure how well college graduates are prepared for the their careers. Part of being prepared rests as a responsibility to the student. However, it also becomes the responsibility of the institution to provide an education that gives the student a holistic understanding of their career. The focus here is on the topic of accounting as taught at universities. Although there has been significant research conducted to improve the education of accounting as a principle, the facet that has long been ignored is teaching the subject in preparation for realistic career expectations instead of meeting obsolete standards. A point of emphasis is the hands-on experience that students in the field experience prior to graduation: are they truly grasping an understanding on what the responsibilities of accountants entail? Reading a driving manual is no doubt important, but it is not until the individual gets behind the wheel that the actual learning takes place; everything else that was read is merely memory. This research paper will explain why it is important for universities to develop a more precise curriculum for accounting that provide students with the background needed to begin their careers and stress the importance, of and assess the impact, of a hands-on working experience prior to graduation. Accounting as currently taught at Universities There is...
