According to the Article “ABC in a Virtual Corporation;” in response to the questions I believe the company is operating under a decentralized system. The challenges that the company was facing during the time was control costs. The pricing strategy did not differentiate between small and large orders, so the profitability of the orders varied. They relied on requesting everyone to keep costs down and distributing the costs evenly. I feel that Super Bakery’s management thought it was necessary to install an ABC System because in the article, Super Bakery’s management suspected that costs were not the same for each order. Although it makes sense the costs in rural Iowa would not be the same as downtown city areas, the article makes it clear that ABC is needed for the differential size of the orders. Baked goods are batch goods, meaning the goods are made, cooked, and wrapped in batches because they are perishable and so you only make exactly what is needed before the ingredients possibly spoil. Large batches differ from small batches in that certain batch costs such as measuring, churning, and baking the ingredients.
Super Bakery is suited to a job order cost system and not a process order cost system. Process cost systems are used when each unit of product is identical and the production process is the same for all batches. There is no change from one customer to the other because the product is standardized. Super Bakery has a range of products that differ in ingredients, batch size, and process, and the order ranges from large too small. This is closer to catering than to mass production of snack cakes to be sold in a supermarket with that being said, the best system for tracking costs is the job order costs. When they receive an order, the cost of the ingredients, warehousing the ingredients, the cost of running the batches, and the wrapping and delivery or shipping, should be identified with the job. This would give them a better idea how to price the larger and smaller jobs and perhaps make them more competitive on larger jobs. Super Bakery moved from a traditional to an activity based costing system in order to recognize that all orders do not cost the same to complete. By tracking the manufacturing, warehousing, sales and shipping costs by order, they are better able to find out which jobs use which resources and distinguish between those jobs in their pricing policies. Further, since they now have details on job resource consumption, they can give their network of associates an incentive to perhaps sell differently. For small jobs, they might price the baked goods per item, which may help the consumers see that the small batches are driving up the costs. This may permit bidding and winning larger jobs. Also, this will allow Super Bakery to have a clearer picture of which jobs are more or less profitable and allow them to retain the best alliances with profitable partners and to release those that are not as successful.

...Costing Methods: Super Bakery, Inc. George Mancuso ACC/561 Accounting March 18, 2013 Lisa Parker Abstract Super Bakery, Inc., a virtual corporation is a supplier of mineral-, vitamin-, and protein-enriched doughnuts and other baked goods to institutional food distribution centers nationwide (Kimmel, Weygandt, & Kieso, 2009). The company has grown at an average rate of 20% annually since 1990 but persistent challenges of identifying opportunities for cost efficiency in using traditional costing methods requires new strategy. Desire for new “system that would more accurately assign the costs of each order” (Kimmel, Weygandt, & Kieso, 2009, pg. 865), Super Bakery is exploring activity-based costing (ABC) management. Super Bakery, Inc. In 1990, former Pittsburg Steeler’s player Franco Harris incorporated the Supper Bakery, a nationwide supplier of mineral-, vitamin-, and protein-enriched bakery goods to the institutional food market (Kimmel, Weygandt, & Kieso, 2009). As a virtual corporation, Super Bakery’s core business functions are maintained within the company. Other business functions such as “selling, manufacturing, warehousing, and shipping—are outsourced to a network of external companies… to add maximum value to the company while making the minimum investment in permanent staff, fixed assets, and working capital” (Kimmel, Weygandt, & Kieso, 2009, pg. 865). Currently the company is using a traditional costing method that does not identify the accurate...

Costing Methods Paper

...PAPER Costing Methods Paper Marsha Pettus University of Phoenix Accounting ACC/561 Bethany Kessel November 27, 2013 Costing Methods Paper Super Bakery, Inc. was founded by Franco Harris, formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers, in 1990. The corporation supplies healthy, vitamin enriched doughnuts and other baked goods, out of an initial desire to make a difference in the institutional food market by targeting school systems nationwide (Kimmel, 2009). While, the company experiences positive growth since its inception, Super Bakery is at the point where it needs to explore a costing system that can establish a more accurate product costing method that can, at minimum, improve control of overhead costs. What strategies did the management of Super Bakery, Inc. use? Formed as a virtual corporation, Super Bakery designed a business model that performs key strategic planning and business functions in-house while outsourcing all manufacturing components as a cost reductions strategy. Super Bakery successfully maximizes profits by outsourcing all other components such as sales, manufacturing, warehousing, and shipping to external companies (All Business, 2012). As a result, Super Bakery watched its profits successfully grow, on an annual basis by 20%, since its inception in 1990. Why did Super Bakery’s management think it was necessary to install an ABC system? Super Bakery, Inc. believed it was necessary to install an Activity-Based-System...

...Chapter 10 THE PRODUCTION BUSINESS PROCESS TEACHING TIPS I usually gloss over the materials on job costing, for my students have covered job costing in their Cost/Managerial course. I do emphasize the need for good ledger control over property, plant, and equipment. THE PRODUCTION BUSINESS PROCESS Production Planning and Control. A sales order or sales forecast cause the creation of production orders which specify items that should be produced. Materials are requisitioned and production is scheduled. Items are produced, inspected, transferred to finished goods inventory, then transferred to shipping to complete the process. Basic production requirements are provided by the bill of materials and master operations list. Resources available for production are communicated to the production control function through inventory status reports and factor availability reports. The production order serves as authorization for the production departments to make certain products. Materials requisitions are issued for each production order to authorize the inventory department to release materials to the production departments. Production status reports are periodically sent from the production departments to the production control function. Cost Accounting Controls. Job costing is a procedure in which costs are distributed to particular jobs or production orders. In process costing, costs are compiled in process or department accounts by periods (day, week, or month). The cost accounting department...
